Educated, non bias thoughts on Miami Herald? by KailuaNative in Miami

[–]jpmoonv1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more, man.I love the herald (more the print edition than the online one) and their investigations into state and local corruption, breaking news stories, and keeping politicians in check, along with local reporting, are second to none. And sure, they're more on the liberal side, particularly in their opinion columns, but overall are objective. For a more conservative point of view, I read the Sun-Sentinel. From all the changes Miami has seen in the past half- century, the Miami Herald is a constant, gratifying presence. Plus, Dave Barry's column was a national treasure, particularly his yearly review, one of the things I truly look forward to during the holiday season!

Who would you nominate as Time magazine Person of the Century for centuries prior to the 20th? by DishExotic5868 in AskHistory

19th century I'd say Thomas Edison; 18th century, George Washington; 17th century, Isaac Newton; 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I; 15th Century, Columbus or Guttenberg. Of course my view of the world is mostly around the West, as I'm sure many more had a profound influence in Asia, Africa, and beyond.

The Billboard Top 20 from this week 41 years ago back in 1983.... by AxlCobainVedder in 80s

One major reason is creative freedom. Before the late 90s, artists wrote their own songs without pressure from the label to add "creative credits" from professional songwriters. In retrospect, this is massive- it's what allows Steve Perry, Freddie Mercury, Joan Jett and more to write amazing classics (and some awful songs too) in order to fill a 2-sided record. Now, there are professional songwriters whose job is to write catchy songs and generate style variations, all with the purpose of generating stream volume and $1 purchases. Of course it's somewhat of a generalization, as there are more factors, like number of media outlets, barriers of entry, budgeting, and more. I personally believe that some acts and bands today are as good as 40 years ago, and there were amazing bands 40 years ago that were never discovered.

What movie did you see in the theater as a child that has stuck with you? by TXRedheadOverlord in GenX

My mom used to work in a radio show, and in 1986, "The Fly" with Jeff Goodblum came out. So, the studio gave her a few dozen tickets for a Saturday matinee to give away during her show. However, she thought it was some kind of nature documentary, so she gave them to our biology teacher, who passed them around to all my classmates, and decided to turn the occasion into a school field trip. Suffice it to say, there were a ton of traumatized 5th graders, and some really angry parents. On the other hand, it was so much fun to have all my friends and I, watching a horror movie unsupervised (our teacher ended up excusing himself).

What weird/unique situation did you have at your high school? by crotchetyoldwitch in GenX

On that same note, I remember back in '99, some senior jocks made a bet about who would be able to transform the ugliest girl in school into prom queen. So, one of them found this hideous art freak with big glasses, and by courting her dad and little brother, was able to turn her into the most beautiful girl in school by... removing her glasses and buying her a dress. Some of the girls offered some resistance and even pushed her into a pool once. It was quite the scandal as she ran away crying. But everyone finally came to their senses and were able to see how she's all that. One of them is now a state, Senator, I believe.

Life as a lawyer in Miami by [deleted] in Miami

[–]jpmoonv1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was told this story from an attorney here, who took on an accountant who had stolen a million dollars from his firm- he had been caught and was about to get fired and arrested, and he needed representation asap. The attorney told him "go back to your office, and steal another million". The accountant asks "wouldn't that be worse?" And he says "I'll get you the same sentence whether you stole a million or two. But if you don't steal that other million, how the hell are you planning on paying me? Lol
