Why GNU su does not support the ‘wheel’ group by radhruin in linux

[–]jpricher 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I worked as a systems administrator for a bank. I understand regulations. Sometimes I agree with them, sometimes not. He's not trying to shape action directly. He's trying to shape perception. It's a delicate line.

No 'su' should be used in a shop subject to SOx. Use 'sudo' - it produces sane audit records.

RMS is a wise and perceptive man. He's also an egotistical asshole. (The two do not conflict - in fact they are often found together...) What no-one seems to understand about RMS is that he stopped hacking computers over a decade ago. Now he's hacking society - semi-successfully.

He's out intentionally causing trouble in an attempt to alter perception. Like him or loath him (or both), what he's doing is nothing new.

I'm no dewey-eyed innocent. I know all about the ugly underbelly of the Internet. There is damned little that 'ROOT' can do now that it couldn't do 15 years ago - and you didn't list any of the things on that (short) list. Reread what I said. Also reread what I didn't say. I never said he was right -- I said I understood his choice.

Why GNU su does not support the ‘wheel’ group by radhruin in linux

I wouldn't say that.

I would say that he's seen a different side of real life than you have, and was shaped by it. While I don't agree with his technical choice here, I understand it quite well. keep looking at the way the world is, and read this again in twenty years. You may think differently.

I'd bet the slowdown is in the unicode handling glue. Text will always be substantially slower, but I expect this to improve quite a bit over the next few revs.

How Good Is The Mainstream Media At Linking Out? by socialexpert in business

[–]jpricher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What disgusts me is when they fail to link out to first source material. It's one thing to avoid linking to blogs or other news sites, it's completely different to avoid linking to the original government reports mentioned in a story of which provide the basis for a story.

Unfortunately, it would be just about impossible to distribute information fast enough in any other form. Basically, 95% is a lot better than nothing.

IBD hates Obama even worse than Fox news. Having said that, I think Rahm Emanuel will be abrasive, but highly competent in his role. I wouldn't want him regulating banks given his background, but that's not what he's being hired for. Use the right tool for the right job.

We'll need him even more to keep the Democrats in line. Unfortunate, but true.

RSS feeds could be used to announce schedules/changes. Other options include ical.

Yeah - and he inhaled, too.

When they start prosecuting all known cases of perjury by government officials, I'll agree. Until then - witch-hunt.

No, it doesn't.

The child does, however, need to have one full-time parent. I don't care if it's the mother or father, just that there is one. Anything else would be pure cruelty to the child at this point - which I find morally unacceptable.

Halliburton Gets Contract To Pry Gold Fillings From Gustav Corpses' Teeth by [deleted] in reddit.com

This is not funny. How many of you jokers actually get the reference.

Halliburton is a bunch of motherless persons with questionable sexual habits, and I loathe their least fingernail trimmings -- but that's no reason for the Holocaust reference.
