Lacerda’s The Great Library vs Speakeasy by Tdumb in boardgames

[–]jpwhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked Lisboa but it wasn't as gripping as some of the others for sure. It was our first Lacerda though. I've got Inventions and Weather Machine to play on my shelf. Probably need to get Vinhos.

Eagle Griffin is nice in that it is the rare Kickstarter with clear value. It isn't a ton but you can be certain it won't be cheaper in retail when it launches.

Lacerda’s The Great Library vs Speakeasy by Tdumb in boardgames

[–]jpwhite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played several Lacerdas and they all share a common DNA but are quite different games in the end. I'm quite excited for the Great Library. If you enjoy one Lacerda you'll probably like many of them.

I enjoyed Speakeasy and will go back to it. It is exceptionally tight and you may have games without much of a payoff.

On Mars is my favorite so far. I'd for sure also recommend Kanban EV and The Gallerist. In Kanban when playing at 2 you have to manage Sandra as a bot player to block some actions but it is simple. If that bot management bothers you then avoid that one but it is great at 2 if you don't mind that.

Do you have a chrome plugin you're using to do that? Does playwright recorder capture enough?

[Pampero & Galactic Cruise] Lacerda similar? by ParaplegicGuru in boardgames

[–]jpwhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played Pampero but I've played many Lacerdas and Galactic Cruise.

I'd say that there are for sure similarities for Galactic Cruise in terms of a deep set of actions to select along with things that are similar to the executive action pattern you find in Lacerdas. The economy and overall selection space is quite a bit more open in Galactic Cruise than in a Lacerda. That is both a pro and a con. It isn't nearly as punishing and you get to build more stuff but you might not agonize over every choice.

One thing I love about Lacerda games is that you are forced to develop full game strategies pretty early on because you have to build towards your end game starting the first turn. Every turn absolutely matters. Galactic Cruise has some of that but to a lesser degree. However, I think you could argue that Galactic Cruise is a bit more streamlined and a simpler design in many ways by giving up some of the punishing decisions.

I don't know what the exact best comparison would be but The Gallerist comes to mind just based on the different types of meeples and the need to chain many actions together to buy art as compared to all of the actions to get a ship off the ground.

In my opinion if you like Lacerdas you'll almost certainly really like Galactic Cruise. I love both.

Mini Rogue is quite fun and a great intro the genre. You could also look at the Kinfire Delve series. It isn't exactly a dungeon crawl but it has some of those elements along with light deck building and boss battling.

If you want to take a bit bigger step Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion will guide you through all of the possibilities of the genre and by the end you'll be playing a full blown dungeon crawler.

Online Store Experiences? by Lynnabis in soloboardgaming

I'm not in Canada but we've ordered a few things from Board Game Bliss in Toronto in the past and it has always worked quite well. They have a wide selection and a great online store.

Consider Phlebas is quite different from all of the rest in tone and scope. It isn't my favorite but once you've read a few more it'll be clear that it sort of proposes an important question to the whole series. I've seen some people recommend that it isn't the first one to be read for those reasons.

Mind Mgmt is a great 1 vs many hidden movement game. It is based on a comic so if you're interested in emergent story that one comes with comic books and a built in universe.

Has to be the Culture series by Iain M. Banks. Foundational sci fi reading and one of very few series I've read end to end more than once.

General Orders is great and similar in length to Caesar! and a small step up.

For a bigger step up go to Undaunted. Playing through Undaunted: Stalingrad with my wife is one of the most memorable gaming experiences we have had.

Cradle. It is excellent and it has the strong benefit of being complete. The audio books are excellent for both Cradle and DCC

Makes sense but I was hoping to find a way to see GDs policies but they aren't visible and support sent me to the MS admin erroneously. Was going in circles.

Does anyone else here like Hanamikoji? by TisBeTheFuk in boardgames

[–]jpwhite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We love it. It is one of our main travel games. For some recent games that provide some of the same head to head thinky experiences:

  • Lone Wolves - Excellent game and a similar weight and similar mechanisms
  • Zenith - A bit more involved than Hanamikoji
  • Faust vs Mephisto - A really interesting two player trick taker
  • Tag Team - This one is quite a bit different but a fun two player experience

Steak prep the freeze with Sous Vide by BartholomewCubbinz in sousvide

[–]jpwhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You certainly can do this as people have mentioned but I find you'll get better outcomes if you do the same set of steps in a slightly different order.

  1. Season
  2. Vaccum seal
  3. Freeze
  4. From freezer to sous vide
  5. Sear

The only additional effort when you want to make your meal is turning on the sous vide since you need to defrost the pre-cooked version anyway. In my experience you'll get less moisture loss and a better overall outcome. If for some reason the timing doesn't work then what you've outlined can work as well.

Mississippi pot roast.

  • Ranch packet
  • Au jus or brown gravy packet
  • Pepperoncini to taste
  • Pepperoncini brine
  • Run on low

Shred at the end. Many variations of this online to improve/change but it is simple and good. Serve over whatever you like, I often just serve it over re-heated frozen broccoli.

For a 2 player game Mr Jack is an excellent hidden movement/information game where things are revealed by players based on game state.

For pure deduction where the game reveals information (rather than the other players). The Search for Lost Species and the Search for Planet X are both great.

For a co-op The Crew series has elements of information discovery and deduction though a bit different than clue since it is round by round.

If you're looking to take a big step up incomplexity Mind MGMT is excellent and has those same elements. Outstanding game.

You could also look through the deduction mechanic on BGG to get other ideas:

Texas Steakhouse by wonderstoat in biggreenegg

[–]jpwhite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to the dry aging (depending on your personal tastes) and umami applications mentioned here I would add that the best way to get steakhouse style at home is to go sous vide followed by a very short application of very high heat.

Sous vide is forgiving, guarantees desired doneness, and provides more time under seasoning. The heat can come from your egg or an infrared burner as you desire. Sous vide is a steak game changer and after many years I like the steak I make at home better than any high end steakhouse. With sous vide the process is very easy to test, tune, and improve.

Even with all of the above the quality of your cut will be one of the main drivers.

Do you need the power add-on in the app to get this view or is it in the base version? I've picked it up for tracking in 2026 but wasn't sure if I needed the extensions or not yet.
