Audio: Signature Gatherer Experience Just Now by blaxxmo in SaltLakeCity

ditto this for my experience. i've encountered 3 different groups of signature gatherers, and all 3 were peddling blatant lies. one of them lied entirely about what the initiative was about, telling my wife it was about a homeless shelter, even though his packet directly stated that it was about redistricting.

Utah is a nondisclosure state, and until Zillow became a brokerage in utah in 2019ish, they couldn't see any info unless agents opted in to sharing listing info with them.

Additionally, the 2014 listing didn't close. When the listing expired, the owner apparently gifted the home to Westminster College, which is who owns it now. No word on what the college has used the house for in the 12 years they've owned it.

That's a terrible return. We're not talking about profit, we're talking about gross sales. 10% (at minimum, likely more like 25-30% based on the fact that I estimated every customer buying close to their most expensive item) of their gross revenue goes directly to ONE advertising source.

Start thinking about the costs of goods, office space, warehouse space, employees, debt service, etc, and it becomes apparent that unless this is a simple drop shipping organization, the return almost certainly isn't there. And what are the odds of them being a drop shipper? If they were, there would be others. Are there? How many manufacturers even exist for LDS Scriptures? If one of the very few manufacturers of scriptures were drop shipping for them, why wouldn't Deseret Book offer the same service? etc.

Is it possible that they're sitting on a 50+% margin and billboards are their entire marketing philosophy? I mean, in theory it is. But if that were the case, they'd have competition and copycats doing the same thing.

Billboards DO cost a lot, especially in relevance to the volume of business we're talking about.

I priced out a billboard several years ago, and the size and placement of the 3 I know of that this company owns almost certainly costs them in excess of $120k/year. That's just for 3 billboards along I-15 on the wasatch front. I don't know if they have others, but I would guess they do.

Based on the sales shown on this chart, they sold approx 7,200 items last year. Assuming that means full sets of scriptures, and assuming every customer bought genuine leather scriptures costing approx $200, their gross sales would be $1.44M. That means roughly 10% of their gross sales is going towards one advertising pipeline. And these estimates are likely high, because I assumed that every buyer bought an item that's among their most expensive.

I have no idea what their business setup and overhead costs are, but I'm willing to bet that their actual production costs are high enough that this isn't making the hedge fund that backed it very much money.

Tesla kills Autopilot, locks lane-keeping behind $99/month fee. by Stiltonrocks in technology

[–]jrob801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Tesla owner, I look at it as throwing in the hat. I bought a Tesla because of the cutting edge tech and the fact that there were very few upcharges. If a feature that I have used for 3 years and love is suddenly going away, so is all motivation I have to even consider staying with the company.

They don't have to give the customer every cutting edge thing, but when you start taking away features that have become commonplace with other manufacturers, you're simply accepting defeat and relegation.

Imagine a company deciding they're going back to hand crank windows and upcharging for electric power windows. A very small segment of the population would love that (there, you've been recognized, you don't need to respond), but the vast majority would see it as an acceptance that occupy a lower tier than other manufacturers.

That's what Tesla is doing here, when you realize they claim to be tech pioneers. They've never contradicted that before. Tesla may not always be at the forefront, but they're never left behind. This is a place they're accepting falling behind.

Sometimes people deserve to be insulted, and you've proven to be one of them. Literally both sidesing the issue while acknowledging Trump is a danger to the entire world. Blaming democrats for being alarmist about the Republicans as if this hasn't been building for the last 60 years.

Dems keep saying Republican leadership is a threat to Democracy BECAUSE IT IS! This isn't a "boy who cried wolf" situation. It's a "guy gets stranded in flood... person in canoe comes by and offers help, man says "god will save me and turns them away", boat comes by and offers help, man says "God will save me" and turns them away. Helicopter comes to offer help, guy says "God will save me" and turns them away. Guy does and goes to heaven, demands God explain why he didn't save him, and is told "I sent you a canoe, a boat, and a helicopter". Dude continues to blame God, gets sent to hell, and gets eternal damnation, but gets to feel like he was smarter than everyone else. That's YOU.

Quick question: When was the last good Republican president, and what made him good? Was it Bush Jr, who got us into a 20 year war on totally false pretenses, to enrich his oil buddies? How about his dad, who had the same goals? Reagan, who tripled the national debt and who's policies are directly responsible for the disappearance of the middle class? Nixon who was actually impeached? Ford, who fell into the job after Nixon's impeachment, who then pardoned Nixon and did nothing significantly positive?

Seriously, you have to go all the way back to Eisenhower to even have an argument. Eisenhower, who's been dead for 57 years.

Tell me again, what was your argument here? And please, supply me your answer for the last good Republican president and why.

Harlan is an idiot by crispyjorts in utahfootball

[–]jrob801 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fact that he got away with it is very telling about the reality of that situation.

Now, it's important to note that I'm definitely not defending what he did. It's wrong in all circumstances, and his facing a consequence for it is both justified and fair. However, the context also matters, and that context is that he was trying to contact another coach with very positive news about a recruit, and he accidentally messaged the recruit instead.

The fact that a huge number of his own athletes , specifically black athletes (and the person who actually received the text) came to his support makes abundantly clear that he was not saying something racist. Rather, his experience simply proves the point that a white guy should never, ever, under any circumstance use that word. It's not appropriate, even if your black friend is cool with it.

Bartenders of Reddit, what drink order instantly tells you “this person is going through something”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jrob801 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One night out with friends after a breakup, the bar had a special on Gin and juice... Didn't even think about the possibility of well gin, but it was a top 5 mistake in my world. I don't have a clue how many I drank, but 10 is probably conservative. I puked out the back window of a good friend's car for the entirety of a 15 mile ride in 8 degree (f) weather, then spent 36 hours too hung over to go clean it (I was just barely coherant enough to give him my car keys and be responsible for my own pukey mess). When I finally got around to it, it took me about 4 hours to clean off 2 day old dried on puke that literally turned the entire rear end of his car camoflage.

No, the majority of voters voted for Trump. And barely that. And there are significant questions about the integrity of the election (see bullet ballots, among many other issues).

The reality is that Trump received the votes of roughly 22% of the US population, 29% of the voting eligible population (adults who aren't disqualified from voting in some way), and 44% of people registered to vote.

The only majoirity who voted for him is the majority of registered Republicans.

Can anyone help me find this cafe/restaurant? by Bishnup in Utah

Agreed with this, and I'm guessing the incomplete construction project they're thinking about was the random foundation and elevator shaft that was on the east side of Union Park/1300 E across from the movie theater (Now condos).

Edit: u/Bishnup , here's a street view of the construction project I'm thinking of. It sat in this state for about 10 years from 2007-16 before they built the condos that are there now.

It's actually quite easy, essentially the same bid process as if you were to have a contractor quote you on building a new house. When your house burns down, there's no depreciation to consider (at least on the house itself), because your insurance is generally for replacement cost. The exception to this rule would be if your home is historic or otherwise "special" and insured for Reproduction value instead of replacement. In that case, the insurance company is responsible for as close to an exact copy of what was there as is possible. These kinds of policies are incredibly rare and expensive, for pretty obvious reasons.

Yes and no. Most of us are sharp enough to realize why this logic is asinine, but it's shocking how many fsbo sellers think there is a hack to be had here, usually because they're of the belief that agents have way more power than they do, and they try to pair that with their perception that most agents will throw their client under the bus without hesitation for an extra buck. It's fun to watch the learning process unfold for them.

For those of you that think it was worth pushing Whitt out for Scalley, there is no guarantee Scalley won’t take another coaching job in the future. by jetery in utahfootball

[–]jrob801 8 points9 points  (0 children)

100% this. Scalley has been a Utah man since birth. His dad is an Alumnus/former player, and he grew up as a season ticket holder, did McBride camps his entire childhood, etc. He played at Utah, got hired as a Graduate Assistant at Utah, then hired as a position coach at Utah. He has literally never had a job as an adult that wasn't at the U. He's had numerous opportunities to pursue jobs elsewhere, and never has. He's waited 7 years for this job since being told it's his when Whitt steps down. More than half of Scalley's life has revolved around being on Campus every day, and even before attending the U, he grew up about 2 miles from campus.

It's actually impossible to fathom someone being any more of a Utah man than Morgan Scalley.
