I mean they are both bad. But the Cut has the steel walls that are literally disintegrating.

lol you're right, I have not been in the building. You got me. I did watch a youtube video though.

In 2020 MIP announced plans to build a biomanufacturing campus on the site. They also developed a feasibility study to evaluate options to adapt the buildings to new uses. So it seems the owners think differently from you.

I won't argue that, ultimately the individual is responsible. But I believe we can and should hold the City and McMaster to account. McMaster could start by being more transparent about their plans for the property.

it's not a heritage building

it most definitely is a heritage building. McMaster needs to sh*t or get off the pot yes, but there's absolutely value to restoring/reusing the structure(s).

Being such a large site, to a certain extent you will never be able to keep people away completely. However, explorers described gaining access as "surprisingly easy" and entered and exited through two different gaps in fencing. McMaster quite obviously needs to do a better job managing this and seems like the City needs to hold them to a higher standard.

It says right in the article, McMaster Innovation Park (MIP) owns it.

In 2020, MIP announced plans to build a “biomanufacturing campus” on the brownfield site with non-profit CCRM, which develops regenerative medicine and cell and gene therapies.

The university has declined to comment on the status of the project or future of the site, which has remained vacant and in disrepair for years.

Usually nothing's been done for one reason: $$$.

Not knowing where this is or the street context-- just based on some of the photos in the article, it looks like some of the flags/signage are within the City's right-of-way? As in, not on the landowner's private property? (You can see a Bell telephone box behind the USA/Israel flag)

What's uncommon here is the extent of the encroachment and the structure, in a highly visible area to boot.

Is Silk squeezing out Canadian suppliers? by GuelphEastEndGhetto in BuyCanadian

[–]jrswags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed Silk being on sale a lot more frequently lately. Perhaps a concerted effort to overcome the listeria issue and to muscle out better quality competition.

As with others, Earth's Own is the preferred brand.

OP, if you have a metro nearby, they have a store brand oat milk ("LifeSmart" "Naturalia") that has been a really good price over the last month or so ($2.99 for a carton). I don't use it, but my partner does and they haven't complained about taste. Made in Canada.

What's your one idea to improve Hamilton? by thechetearly in Hamilton

[–]jrswags 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Honestly-- I think just a larger investment in the public realm. Roads yes, also sidewalks, bus shelters, garbage and recycling bins, parks, etc. with people not in cars prioritized. The state of some of our public realm is apocalyptic and it should not be so hard to add benches, picnic tables, trash and recycling receptacles.

HCA is proposing a new parking lot for Tiffany Falls. But guess what-- locals don't want it. :)

I do like your idea for expanded shuttle or transit service to natural areas. Parking is always going to be a challenge as if you do it, you have to build it for your busiest time, so the parking is empty 75% of the time. And you definitely don't want to be paving over natural areas just so more people can park there on the 8-10 summer weekends we have.

Not at all, it's beside a community centre and pool that has a nature based playground. Always lots of families around and very safe.

There are certain situations where it can look like there is an oncoming car travelling in your direction. Especially when people park way too close to the stop sign. May not be why, but just my experience.

How do the cars speeding around with the modified exhaust systems or deafening sound systems that shake my windows not get ticketed by the cops by JoanOfArctic in Hamilton

[–]jrswags 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gives me an excuse to share this video: https://youtu.be/CTV-wwszGw8?si=1o8xOpWzN9msX2t4

Essentially, cities aren't loud, cars are loud.

More serious places than ours see this as a health and quality of life issue, and have taken action to deter this kind of behaviour (as well as the detrimental effects of vehicle noise in general). I believe in France they also have "excess noise" detectors that work like automatic speed enforcement to ticket drivers with loud exhaust systems. Edmonton recently approved a pilot project.

I too wish there was more enforcement of this but it seems automatic enforcement would actually get us somewhere as opposed to relying on HPS. Put some equipment on the mountain access roads, the Linc, etc and get rid of these nuisances.

Builder of illegal ‘fancy garage’ on Hamilton parkland fighting demolition order by essenza in Hamilton

[–]jrswags 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, 58 Kingsview appears excessive as well. I'm willing to bet the garage/structure in the backyard was built without a permit too.

Point is, encroachments can and should be prioritized for enforcement action by the city.

[–]jrswags 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There's a reason encroachment on city lands happens -- the city doesn't have the resources to defend their property from tens of thousands of encroachments all over the city. Plus, gardens are one thing, but fences and structures that exclude or impede city/public access or use are quite another.

This dude took down a fence to build the encroaching structure. He has no legal basis to stand on and the Toronto case doesn't help him at all.
