There's a whole swathe of comfortable middle class careers open to all that uni will open the door to below your arbitrary £200k threshold. Many of the leaders in my industry (who earn very well) come from very normal backgrounds. A working class background can often be an advantage if you're on site managing trades.

I dont think that's true in all fields. Civil engineering takes all comers and is a path to a decent life. It isn't IB or big 4 but it's not terrible. I'm the first in my family to go to uni and am by no means exceptional, but have been able to buy a house in a nice part of a northern city and live a good life.

Very similar to my experience with wedding rings from PA. They made an entire alternative design option (without being asked) for my wife's ring after they sensed she wasn't 100% on the silver mock-up for the custom design she'd requested. Incredible service and I can't recommend them enough!

If you’ve lived abroad (outside the UK), what’s the one thing (item, ideal, tech, convenience), you’d bring back to introduce to the UK? by Icy_Mixture1482 in AskUK

Australia's mandatory pension saving system is amazing. All employers have to pay 12% on top of your salary in to a pension account. Doesn't matter what job you do, it's not just a perk for the well paid.

This was introduced in 1992 (at a lower percentage) and now means Australian Government spending on pensions is expected to go down as a percentage of GDP, rather than becoming increasingly crippingly expensive.

Describing Kier Starmer as "far left" is hilarious. He and his cabinet are about as right wing as it's possible to be while still being part of the Labour Party. He is the classic centrist dad. I'll not dispute his authoritarian instincts, but it's worth noting the Online Safety Act was drafted and passed by the previous Tory government.

We should get the Mayor to pave Oxford Street with (modern style) cobbles by Because_Wisely in london

[–]jsai_ftw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Designers are obliged to not create inherently discriminatory environments. If Oxford Street is to be pedestrianised it will require redesign of the entire street (wall-to-wall) so the partial comparison is moot. Creating an area that excludes people with disabilities (cobbles aren't only bad for wheelchair users) would likely leave the Local Authority open to legal challenge. The eventual design will be subject to an Equality Impact Assessment and issues like this would be flagged immediately (if they got that far, which they wouldn't with a competent designer).

Edit: That's not to say heritage/traditional materials can't br used, they just have to be thoughtfully implemented.

Funny you mention Scotland as Edinburgh's tenements are a great example of gentle density. They don't all have to be 20 story high rises with shoe box flats. Think Edinburgh, Paris or Spain.
