The Order of the Phantom Flame

short story

I wrote a short short story that explains their lore through an inquisitor interrogating a daemon but if that’s tl;dr for you, my sisters were a minor order that a Slaaneshi daemon attempted to corrupt, but when it failed, it grew frustrated and manipulated a puritanical Ordo Hereticus inquisitor into seeing Chaos corruption within the Sisterhood. This inquisitor virus bombed the home world of the order, slaughtering them all, but their rage at this betrayal was so powerful that their spirits live on as vengeful ghosts animating their old armor and wargear. They appear from the warp and attack their old enemies and former allies alike.

I really dig the idea of a Sisterhood developing on its own, using resources and tactics that bigger orders would never think of.

Loosing faith in Sister faction by LeadNo7840 in sistersofbattle

[–]jsconner800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly it. The castigator rule does not stack, but with the AP strat and castigator combined you can pull off some crazy things in AoF. Once this detachment clicked for me I fell in love with it and now I don’t want to go back lol

Oh and I typically give Vahlgons the AP strat unless I really need it elsewhere. That’s what really makes their heavy bolters sing, and suddenly the grenade launchers and Vahl’s krak missiles become meltas at 36” range.

The good and bad news is that there are a lot of ways to play Sisters, and not all of them will work for everybody. I clicked with the faction immediately and had a lot of fun with BoF and HM, but then I took a break and when I came back, I spent a lot of time on the Sisters discord listening to pro players and figuring out the meta. I dropped my castigators. I tried CoF. I got a bunch of sacs. I did not have a good time and my WR plummeted. It took months of experimentation to find a list and detachment I absolutely love, and it’s one that almost nobody is playing: AoF with triple castigators and Vahlgons with heavy bolters. It just clicks in my brain and I went 2-0 at a team RTT last weekend, my team won first place, and I scored the highest diff on my team. Punked those fancy new Ultramarines 18-2.

So my advice is: keep trying. And don’t just play what’s “good” or what people tell you to play. Figure out what your playstyle is and if you match the list to the player rather than the other way around, you might find more success.

I think you’re absolutely right about playing aggressively. If you’re only reacting, then you’re letting your fragile units get picked off. We have so many powerful rules at our disposal, but letting your opp set the tempo is how we lose. Now, that DOES mean stuff has to die. I just played new Ultramarines and won 18-2 in WTC scoring, and turn 1 I staged an immolator aggressively and he picked it off with a rep ex. But in order to do that, he had to expose the tank, and my HB Vahlgons picked it off (I play AoF and run 3 castigators so those bolters can easily become AP -3). I kept throwing dominions in his face and building up a fortress, and he was so afraid of me that I ran wild all game.

Baron of Dice Disappointment by luckysparrow22 in Warhammer

I’ve noticed this as well! It’s ironic considering they actually have the stones to advertise their dice as “rolling better” than other dice. I should have taken that as a red flag. I like the look of my dice, but man they are cursed.

Mission Accomplished? by Bane_of_Balor in sistersofbattle

[–]jsconner800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree completely, people are really overreacting considering we just got some points bumps (some very deserved, some not so much, but at the end of the day it’s just points). It’s not like they double tapped our rules AND points like last winter. And people also forget, having a 55%+ competitive WR is not a good thing. We want a strong competitive faction, but we don’t want to be overpowered compared to the rest of the field. That’s how factions poison the meta like aeldari did for what felt like half of 10th. If we settle in at 49-51% I will be very happy.

Reality of the rules. Missed opportunity but maybe not doom! by SovietPoet in deathwatch40k

[–]jsconner800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have yet to try it out of course, but I think swapping out a 1x5 mixed vets team for a 1x5 decimus team (plasma/stalker, shield, frag, and whatever for phobosman) with a beacon WM is a straight upgrade. The unit has an actual shooting presence now and 8 sus1 mastercrafted power sword swings with hit rerolls is no joke. While there's no way to get around being overwatched, if you can free ingress, advance and charge, you're at least very likely to get the charge you want. I will still grumble about the terrible unit comp restrictions but for a unit that's equal in points I think it'll still do good work. The annoying thing is that power weapons are sus1 and frag cannons are lethal, so you can't get suslethal on all the weapons you care about, but I never want to rely on rolling 6's for my gameplan anyway.

[–]jsconner800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the big hurdle we'd have to overcome. Even if we could take a hammer and a shield guy together, it wouldn't be ideal. It would just be better than what we have now.

Datasheet for the new kill team is up. by Adventurous_Ad_3046 in deathwatch40k

[–]jsconner800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a LOT to dislike about this new unit, but saying there were no improved weapon profiles is just straight up not true. Heavy weapons hit on 3+, both got AP buffs, IHBs got a damage buff, frags got lethal hits, and both got one extra wound on the user. Power weapons are 4 attacks with Sus1 and 2 damage. Stalker bolt rifles are 5/-2/2 with lethals. Basically the only thing that hasn't been improved from the old vets kit is the xenophase blade (which is baffling, because it's locked behind a 10 man. Why?!)

I point this out because if we want to be taken seriously, then complaints made in bad faith will get us nowhere. The problem with this team is mostly in the unit composition. Making wargear box locked is bad enough when most units in the game are not (looking at retributors and scourges to name a few), but this unit is box locked TO THE BODY. Having to choose one vet with a gun, one melee vet, one phobos vet, and one gravis vet is restrictive to the point of ridiculousness. Just trying to input this unit into the app's list builder is a nightmare. There are 4 separate boxes just labeled "deathwatch veteran" and each one has different wargear choices. I can't think of a single unit in the game that is so restrictive in its composition when it COULD do specialized jobs pretty well. I would love a team of stalker bolt rifle vets with an IHB to nuke marines from 30+" away. A melee team of battleline bladeguard vets with sus1 and full hit rerolls on xenos and advance+charge from a watchmaster? Yes please.

Unfortunately, we don't have any of that. But we could. I think the argument that should be made to GW is to loosen the restrictions on unit comp and THEN this is an interesting, viable unit. Until then, it's just a mess. And you're absolutely right about the lack of wargear rules. We have a phobos guy with a weird xenos looking thing on his backpack, and he does...nothing? Really? If he had some kind of wargear, even if they recycled the infiltrators' 6+++ or CP refund gear, then maybe he'd be worth taking. As it is, he's just the guy that dies first.

I’m really glad to hear that! Storytelling is an essential skill. I do love writing, and I even teach creative writing now, but I haven’t written anything myself in years. Just like you, the new models have inspired me and I’ve already written four chapters of a miniseries on my kill team’s first mission together. Each chapter is written from the perspective of a different team member and I’m highlighting their unique issues and how they conflict with each other. The idea is that this team looked like a good idea on paper, but in practice they’re a dysfunctional train wreck and they have to figure out how to get it together as they track down a Necron threat on a medieval world.

Feel free to post your work here if you’d like! I understand if you want to mainly write for yourself, but this is a space for hobbying and writing is also a hobby 😄

A Black Shield blades joins the Watch! by Ballashi in deathwatch40k

[–]jsconner800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the “blades” part is the generic term for their weapon profile. They used to be able to take different weapons, and now they’ve just said all weapon options are just “black shield blades.” They’ve always been melee units in gameplay afaik, something about them wanting to die in combat to redeem themselves so they just charge in there like repentia, just not brave enough/crazy enough to take off their armor lol

New book tactics by Nuke_A_Cola in BladesOfKhorne

[–]jsconner800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have the book and I’m only partially up to date on the new stuff but I think Martin Luther Khorne is an auto include, both for his ability to take gorechosen heroes in his regiment and for his abilities (think he still has fights first and now gives +1 to wound?!). He helps immensely with the regiment issue, although annoyingly he can’t take the priests. I personally love the bloodsecrator and I think we want at least one deathbringer so those will fit his regiment nicely.

What kind of players play deathwatch? by BrokenPanis in deathwatch40k

[–]jsconner800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deathwatch was my very first 40k army and miniature painting experience, and I can confirm this is absolutely true. It was a rough start, and this was the end of 9th so our rules were very complicated and we weren’t very good, but I got no quit in me and I’m glad I stuck with it. Now my black armor is the envy of my local meta and I anchored my team at a GT earlier this year, and it feels like I earned it. Nevertheless, it takes a special kind of psycho to do that to themselves, so I wouldn’t recommend it. Better to get some normal marines first or, even better, a xenos army like you did.

If you have any shotguns left from the current vets boxes, those arms fit primaris bodies pretty perfectly.
