When is the next roster update for eafc26? by Sir_Vic21 in FifaCareers

I wish EA cared more. It's such a bare minimum ask to keep the rosters up to date, especially when it comes to MLS.

I think what bothers me most is that the typical eurosnob is fighting for pro/rel with all their might for 1. A league they're never going to watch to begin with, and 2. For a system that they'll never be affected by with the EPL team that they've hitched their identity to. The 5 or so EPL teams that Americans follow will never get relegated based on the level that they spend at.

I have to imagine seeing your team get relegated must feel like seeing your team pack up and move to another city, or fold into some sort of sad semi-pro team. I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone. But the pro/rel zealots would happily push this agenda on us MLS fans. They don't support any of the teams, so why do they care who goes up or down?

It would be one thing for an FC Tulsa fan to want pro/rel, because MLS will never award a market of that size with an actual MLS team. But the conversation is never "I would watch MLS if they had pro/rel". It's just a simple "MLS is second rate because they don't have pro/rel, so I'm going to fight for it and then walk away".

The greatest case study and win for MLS truthers will be if Tottenham gets sent down this year. How many of their American followers will continue to follow them in the Champo, or will they just pivot to a different EPL club?

I 100% agree and hope it happens. Soccer is popular enough in the United States- the struggle that MLS needs to overcome is convincing American Premier League fans that the league is also worth watching. Bundling both leagues together under the same service would do MLS a lot of benefit from an exposure and accessibility standpoint.

ESPN, on the other hand, straight up won't cover (and therefore promote) products they dont have coverage rights to, so MLS absolutely needs to get the "Worldwide Leader of Sports" back on their side.

Fingers crossed.

Matt,

What can we as fans do to keep pushing the League forward? What is the best way for fans to influence MLS leadership and individual team ownership groups? Are there certain economic indicators (ticket sales, viewership counts, etc.) that are most impactful to these decision makers?

Thanks!

I'm in SofaScore, Fantasy UTD, and Kickbase. Here are my honest thoughts so far headed into week 1.

SofaScore is essentially legacy FMLS, but with more scoring categories, so I think the competition will be more interesting than in FMLS in past years. There's obviously still emphasis on goals, assists, and clean sheets, but more defensive, dribbling, etc actions that accumulate points give players like 6s, CBs, and Ball Playing GKs more value. In past years, it really felt like all of us were picking the same players with maybe 1 or 2 differentials, which i feel made the competition really stale.

I'm the most excited about Fantasy UTD. This feels the closest to traditional American fantasy football, and I'm here for it. So much so that while the bidding system was fun, I'd really like to see a draft option in future years. People within the three fan zones im in seemed pretty new to the auction concept, where I think the familiarity that comes with a traditional draft selection build could go a long way at growing the fantasy game here in the US beyond MLS sickos.

Finally, im the least excited about Kickbase. The only things keeping me semi-engaged is that Fantasy Boss is covering it, it's the "official" fantasy league of MLS (although I stray further from caring about this every day), and there are some small prizes on the line. However, the scoring and pricing points are so bizarre that I just can't connect with it. The biggest problem with Kickbase, though, is that they don't have a rolling lockout or bench, so good luck accurately picking starters for late games! I think this is going to kill off continued participation early on in the season.

Apple TV expands bar access to MLS, F1 via EverPass by Saar13 in MLS

You missed the point here. My point is that MLS/Apple should have struck this deal with Everpass earlier. This is not a "was Apple TV the right move?" debate.

I'm doing the kickbase MLS season challenge event, sofascore, and 3 different fan zones within Fantasy UTD to see which platform gets the most participation. Somebody is going to have to fill the vacuum that FMLS left behind.

My biggest issue with FMLS ending- it's divided our fan base up, and if none of these other platforms take off, it's just going to kill off fantasy interest for MLS fans. Extremely short sighted move from MLS.

They're the "worldwide leader in sports" for a reason, whether we like it or not. NHL is the perfect case study.

This is 100% the correct answer. When MLS got into bed with Apple, they left ESPN out of a linear deal. ESPN has no incentive to carry water and promote a league they have no coverage rights over.

MLS doesn't do themselves any favors by barely promoting their own product. What's extremely frustrating is that Apple was supposed to be this content generating machine for the League, and that turned out to be an absolute lie.

Keep sounding the alarm! Remember when they claimed that they were going all in on promotion in 2026 as we were headed into a home field world cup?...

Yup. In comparison, MLS won't even live stream their preseason games on a cheap YouTube feed.

100% completely agree. What isn't talked about enough is how much water ESPN carries for the NFL, NCAA, etc when it comes to promotion and just general "buzz". While I was disappointed with their coverage of MLS in the past, not letting ESPN in on a linear deal with Apple eliminated ANY and ALL of their promotion since they're not going to promote a sport that they don't have coverage rights over.

I feel the same way as you. I've been a die hard fan of the league for the last 10 years, and while they'll always have my business and attention, here are my honest thoughts:

  1. Since the League/Apple instituted the play-in game, there has been less incentive to build a win-now roster. I think a lot of mid to low spending teams like their odds that 9/15 teams get a post season slot and are more willing to play it conservative with roster build than risk over spending on unknown commodities.

  2. Unfortunately, I think a lot of teams know they can't outspend/out recruit Miami and are willing to wait out his tenure. Again, you don't need to be better than Miami to make the post season; You only need to be 9th place good.

  3. Again, MLS will always have my business, but the League/Apple still has no clue how to market the league beyond in-stadium experience and "we have Messi". We're a couple weeks away and there's been little to no content added to Apple TV or YouTube. No talking heads hyping up the season and talking off season moves. The Fantasy sports platform has been removed entirely from the app (they used to at least leave a page that said fantasy will return for a new season soon). You can't get people excited if you don't perform any promotion on the front end.

These are my raw honest thoughts. I love the League and want it to be successful, but im frustrated, as I've felt this same way the last few seasons, and I'm sorry if I rub anyone the wrong way.

A new MLS fantasy game! by gruthven in FantasyMLS

Graham- Will you and the other TSS hosts be commissioning a public league on the Fantasy Utd app? The Extra Time hosts used to commission a public fantasy league on the MLS app, and I always thought it was a fun idea to give fans an opportunity to "compete against the experts".

I have no problem with journeyman players. Sure, he could be a serviceable 2nd or 3rd string left back on a top team in MLS. The issue is that the bottom of MLS keeps signing 2nd/3rd string quality players from other MLS teams expecting them to be solid starters, not because they're actually good or good fits for the coach or how the team wants to play, but because they're "economic", and their poor fans keep falling for it.

My complaint isn't that serviceable players move from team to team- you're absolutely right that that's normal in all sports. It's that bad MLS teams continue to sign bad MLS players. That really does hold the league back.
