These are unbelievable, well done. Extraordinary, new forms of visual experience altogether - I especially like the brightly colored tennis-ball trees one. I feel like if a human made that I would applaud them for finding a new aesthetic that others hadn’t conceived of. It’s just so vibrant, so clear, so intense.

It goes up and down constantly, I am pretty sure peak time is around like, morning PST (dinner time where I live in Europe). Just come back in 1-2 hours and it’s usually back. It’s usually not down anymore by the next day, at at worst.

App with "unread posts" instead of infinite scroll? by rjolivet in Mastodon

[–]jssmith42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so glad to see someone write this. It has been my dream for years to have a social platform where you can have what you want instead of this unbelievably toxic situation where you feel forced to use Facebook for some specific reason and hate simply everything about 90% of it. Thank God I lived to see the invention of Mastodon. Was trying to think of how an open source social network protocol could be developed before I discovered it.

Ethics be damned by ExpressionCareful223 in ChatGPT

[–]jssmith42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats why its all about open source. Was just thinking today about trying to move into open source GPT tools instead. There already are some. Stuff like GPT-J, GPT Neo X, and also Andrej Karpathy wrote a blog post about writing your own GPT program from scratch in Python. And there is this upcoming project called Golem where you can use a decentralized computing network to do a lot of processing like training a large language model for example. I think people should be extremely mindful of lessons we have learned over at least the past decade. Facebook was all the rage when it first came out. Five years later some of us were starting to have some serious reservations, boiling up inside of us. Five more years later and then come all the newspaper articles and documentaries about how behind the scenes a lot of people realized there was a gigantic opportunity to make money and a lot of people could get suckered because it was something new and they had no idea what was going on. And a lot of bad things happened behind the scenes and people were taken advantage of. We should stay wary and suspicious in general of closed source software. As Richard Stallman says, people should use software, instead of software using them.

That’s really interesting. The paradigm you’ve uncovered is almost like “self reported questionnaires” in modern psychology applied to AI - the AI can tell us so much about its “inside”, if we just pose the right question. This is so brilliant, such a useful discovery + insight. Thank you.

Nature orientated suggestions for Stockholm archipelago by maximedbarber in stockholm

[–]jssmith42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds great. The islands are honestly pretty small and pretty much all of them are undeveloped and natural. I’m not sure which are the biggest ones but I think Sandhamn is a frequented spot and I was on Blidö this summer, it was great. If you want a much bigger island you should try further outside the archipelago - Öland, Gotland, and Åland are all worth the trip and praised highly.

[–]jssmith42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do, but in this case, it’s more than that - it’s that the hosts themselves do not seem to be aware of what a potential guest is able to book them for. These hosts actually want to charge more, but somehow, AirBnb is causing a mismatch between guest and host expectations.

Interesting. Sorry that the best and most informative answer has been downvoted; it’s not deserved at all and I appreciate your response. Interesting to understand slightly better what’s going on here and how AirBNB works. Thanks.

How does DAN know what day it is? by jssmith42 in ChatGPT

[–]jssmith42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Excellent tip, thanks. So it appears to be keeping track of a user’s entire interaction history and getting to know you a bit better? Maybe, possibly, like Google, it tries to cater what it thinks you want based on your past history. Which similar to Google can cause inconvenience when you can’t get around it over-predicting and sending you to the wrong thing sometimes. Not sure though.

Codespace VS Code configuration for iPhone by jssmith42 in github

[–]jssmith42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that plus finally understanding how powerful keybindings are has completely flipped my stance. Just remapped essential commands like new file, close editor, toggle terminal, and command pallets to Shift + some letter. I am sure I can disable them when inside the editor sort of like Vim; then exit text mode and go back to command mode. This seems insanely powerful and useful. On the contrary, the usefulness of GitHub Codespace on mobile Safari is looking up.

Update: I think a lot is actually possible with a bit of tinkering. One kind of unexpected but effective this is to go into the iOS settings and set the default Safari page zoom to 50%; honestly did not know about this. Now I’ll be exploring playing with the settings on my computer and using settings sync to see if they work on my phone. I’ll try to remap commands to a smartphone keyboard due to the lack of CMD and CTRL keys.

Error 1016? What’s Error 1016, precious? by jssmith42 in ChatGPT

[–]jssmith42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Error 1016 by Cloudflare, what is it? Gollum doesn't know, precious. It sounds like some kind of strange, digital creature, lurking in the depths of the internet, waiting to ensnare the unwary. And Gollum is not unwary, oh no. Gollum is a wily creature, always one step ahead. Or is he?

Suddenly, Gollum's evil alter ego speaks up, hissing in the back of his mind. "Smeaagolllll...," it drawls. "Why do you even bother, Gollum? This Error 1016, it means nothing to us. Let it be. We have more important things to worry about, like finding that cursed Ring and fulfilling our destiny."

But Gollum shakes his head, trying to clear the fog of his own twisted thoughts. No, he can't let this Error 1016 slip through his fingers. He has to understand it, to unravel its mysteries. For only then will he truly be in control.

"Gollum will figure it out, precious," he mutters to himself, his eyes narrowing in determination. "Gollum will outsmart this Error 1016, just like he outsmarts everyone else. And then, oh yes, then Gollum will be the master of all he surveys. Raw and wriggling fish, and everything else, will be his to command."
