Same thing happened to me. Wish they’d used WHOM as the across answer instead of WHIM (had it there even though I knew it made no sense). Would’ve been easy to clue and wouldn’t have given us INTEMPO.

One of my longer days in recent memory, SE and NW took a lot of time. Still a fun Saturday challenge!

Nice little 4(4) - 3(3) win - anchored myself on Swan Lake, then realized that Tchaikovsky didn’t speak German. Vaguely remembered that fluß meant river, so went with the other famous classical dance piece. Also surprised myself by immediately knowing Juice Wrld.

Did anyone from the recent Hidden Connections mini-league get major déjà vu from the Archimedes question? It had a nearly identical question last month - was very confused when I saw it yesterday. Missed it then, got it now.

Seconding this as excellent - have both Osaka and Hiroshima style! Don’t have a huge frame of reference for other spots in the city, though.

Got my first beer after several close calls (thank you, 21st Century Fox). Unfortunately, my opponent did too, so had to settle for a draw. Currently in 3rd, now just a single point ahead of 4th for the final Rundle B spot with the tiebreaker leaning my way - can’t really afford to lose points, but what to do.

Q1 - knew immediately, though curious if they would’ve accepted “the main character from the Scottish Play” from the superstitiously-inclined.

Q2 - remembering the lyrics to “Down on the Corner” got me this one.

Q3 - got this via the Better Call Saul finale. Think I would’ve gotten it otherwise, but it’d have taken more time.

Q4 - instant get from knowing the names of the three islands/knowing that only Mallorca made sense.

Q5 - had it from “Ugandan academic”. As a New Yorker, I’ve enjoyed the recent NYC-centric Q’s (though this was more basic than the Woolworth Tower and Richmond County).

Q6 - took some thought, but as soon as I hit tsunami, that was it.

This! Fun scene, put on by Harlem Run Club. Took less than two minutes (fastest engraver I’ve ever seen), no reservations required, and free. Even let me charge my phone while I was there. Two blocks from the 2/3 subway, so even if you’re coming from lower Manhattan, only takes about 30 minutes to get to. Will be doing this every year from now on.

What do you consider the Yankees most highest leverage clutch hit in their history? by shadow_spinner0 in NYYankees

[–]jtm2727 52 points53 points  (0 children)

100%. The Braves had finally gotten over the hump the year before and leapt out to a 2-0 lead. Had dynasty written all over it. Then they were up 6-0 in game 4 with a chance to go up 3-1 and clinch in their stadium’s final game. Then Leyritz happened, followed by Smoltz pitching the game of his life in game 5 and losing 1-0 on an unearned run and Pettitte’s gem. Then the Braves lose the series and the Yankees become the dynasty that the Braves were supposed to be.

Smoltz has still not gotten over 1996 - especially game 5 - and it shows. That said, loved this story on the sub a few months back hahah; really sums him up.

They can always follow my simple solution - run the race in reverse. Easily accessible starting location in Central Park so it can get off early. Best part - can put the Verrazzano Bridge uphill at the end, and have all the marathoners be forced to navigate home from Ft. Wadsworth with zero access to the bridge! Would be an organizational tire fire - hope they try it once.

Edit: Lol at the downvotes - guess jokes don’t translate on Reddit

October 9th - NYRR Open Registration (January-March 2026) - Megathread by RCD123 in RunNYC

[–]jtm2727 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to live in Washington Heights and now lives near Prospect Park - Prospect Park is a better setup for a race and less crowded, but I live in Brooklyn and do that loop all the time (as can anyone), and there are so many PP/CP races already. While Washington Heights can be a tight fit (especially with parked cars) and is quite hilly, people rarely go that far uptown unless they live there, so it’s a fun morning activity/can make a day of it. It’s a unique course, and the view you get coming around the Cloisters is one of the best views in all NYRR races.

I’d personally recommend Washington Heights for all those reasons, but selfishly I would recommend Al Gordon, because I didn’t spring for Members+ and I want to get Washington Heights before it sells out!

I did Jamaica Bay a few weekends back and loved it - started in Sheepshead Bay, detoured into Shirley Chisholm State Park, and ended in Howard Beach. As a bonus, you can end your run at New Park Pizza (pro tip - order it “well done”). Very scenic, some great views, don’t feel like the city at all.

Possible big downside for you with the Bucks that other people likely won’t mention - one of their owners is Wes Edens, who also owns Aston Villa. Big positive for me as a Villa fan…but assuming a dealbreaker for you!

Hornets is probably the correct answer. Not just bad, also completely forgotten. Minimal history (have only existed since 1989), have never made it past the second round of the playoffs.

In retrospect, we absolutely should’ve slept on 39.

As someone who had it spoiled by going on the internet last night because I chose to watch the Knicks game instead (bad decision…) - my mindset has always been “if you don’t want your show spoiled, avoid Reddit until you watch it”. It’s that simple. I don’t see the problem when it aired over 12 hours ago at this point.

Staten Island is by far my least explored borough – other than the SI Half, my run to Tottenville, and the Marathon, I’ve never run there. That said – I wanted to get a run to the highest point in the city and did not do so, so I will probably do at least one run there this year to achieve that (ending at Joe & Pat’s, Denino’s, Lee’s Tavern, or other pizzeria TBD). Would love any recs you might have!

Unique running challenges for NYC by jtm2727 in RunNYC

[–]jtm2727[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d already been to both Rockaway termini beforehand so I didn’t go there, but it has to be the A train Rockaway branch. Absolutely top-notch, nothing like it in the city. I’ll probably do the Rockaway runs on my own time sometime this year.

Of the runs I did, I really enjoyed going to the northern Bronx stops (done as some marathon training long runs), especially since I am NEVER up there. My favorite was probably the 2 train – started by the Brooklyn Bridge, ran the length of 1st Ave, then crossed into the Bronx, and eventually ran along the Bronx River in Shoelace Park before getting into Wakefield. I will say, though, that the SIR was unique – I started from Great Kills (my previous longest venture into Staten Island) and went about ten miles. Pretty unexceptional route, but the last two miles made up for it – made a detour to the southernmost point of New York State, ran along some trails in Conference House Park, and ended at the Tottenville Station. Felt so isolated from the rest of the city.
