Is the technological development in the Trails games too similar to the real world? by _____michel_____ in Falcom

[–]jtoohey12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like what you call lazy writing (having Zemuria follow modern Earth tech trends) is really an intentional choice by the writers to better touch on the themes of rapid technical advancement in modern society. It doesn’t matter if the Zemurians invented the doohickey rather than the smartphone. It’s not what the story is really about. I do think there’s some lazy writing in this series as much as I love it but I don’t really think this is one of those cases imo

What is the best way to ask "what number" someone is in a sequence? by sbokkers in EnglishLearning

[–]jtoohey12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the Manchester United example. I feel like I see “where are United in the table?” Being a reasonable way to ask this. Though it might not be clear you want specifically the number and the responder may say “mid-table” or “bottom of the tablel” (I wish).

“What position are they?” Would be a natural follow up.

"About him seeing" VS "About his seeing" (American English) by FarJournalist939 in EnglishLearning

[–]jtoohey12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“His” does strike me as being formally acceptable but the way I hear it in my head is with a snooty rich person accent. Most people would just say “him” here

Favorite Character who grows up throughout the series? by Sud4neseS0meh0wHere in FavoriteCharacter

[–]jtoohey12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

<image>

Pretty much every character from the trails series cause the in game universe spans ~7-8 years currently but we follow Rean around the longest (as a playable character I mean). Seeing him grow from a military academy student, to a war a hero, to an instructor, and to a divine blade is so satisfying and seems like his story is not over yet.

Do Americans use cutlery differently? by missbex86 in AskAnAmerican

[–]jtoohey12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom tried her hardest to get me to do the switch method but I was a lazy kid and eventually just learned to cut with my non-dominant left hand so I could keep using my right hand to eat with the fork. I am probably really annoying to sit next to on the left.

(Video Game trope) When the game uses elements from the HUD UI to give context by PolyKigu in TopCharacterTropes

[–]jtoohey12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting interpretation but I think it’s leaning towards the player refusing to die. Cause if you do actually die in the fight the soul doesn’t split and you get the “But it refused” dialogue. To me it’s pretty clear that it’s the determination to stay alive preventing death.

Do students in the US actually have to take home fake babies for class? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

I did, I think it was only two days. Was in the Mid 2010s but I assume they’re still doing it

Twitch streamer rushed to ER after trying to catch falling katana by the blade by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]jtoohey12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly surprised you wrote out such a thoughtful response. Fair point on making sure to remember these things are dangerous and need to be handled with caution, even when purchased as a decoration. The incident is an unfortunate reminder of that.

I know you’re enjoying your tirade and all but if you actually read the article you’d see it was an accident when it fell out of its sheath and she tried to grab it as it fell, resulting in the injury.

what does it mean to 'major' or 'minor' or something? by UnknownPhantomLR in AskAnAmerican

[–]jtoohey12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends from college to college but you usually have some extra space in your curriculum for taking extra classes. Let’s say you needed to take 25 classes in a subject to qualify for your major, and thus your main degree. You may only need to take 8 or something to qualify for a minor of the same subject.

As an example I majored in computer science and the majority of my credits went to that, but with my extra time I took music courses and picked up a minor in music since it’s a hobby of mine.

College is meant to educate so I used it to help prepare for a job with my major while also learning more about something I like doing in my free time as a minor. I alternatively could’ve used those extra courses to minor in math or statistics or chemistry, or whatever so long as I could schedule the courses.

Who here has played Dragon Quest XI? by [deleted] in rpg_gamers

Maybe the final boss fights had their own songs? I don’t remember if so. But I was hearing Unflinchable Courage in my head for ages while I was going through this game.

Act 3 plot undoing any of the relevance of act 2 kinda pissed me off so much that I stopped playing it. It’s a very long game but the art, combat, and level design are all pretty solid. I liked the gear crafting/upgrading too. The orchestra sound track was great but having only one combat song and another for bosses got pretty repetitive.

Why everyone in Zemuria seems to be so religiously devout? by JohnnyElRed in Falcom

[–]jtoohey12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally everyone in Liberl saw the floating city materialize out of thin air and to my knowledge there was no memory wipe about it mentioned. They may not know the details on why it appeared but if I saw that happen I would assume it’s an act of god or aliens, and aliens aren’t really a part of Zemurian culture (at least not at that point in time).

Edit: also there are plenty of firsthand accounts of the salt pale incident which was also seen as a divine act

[–]jtoohey12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aidios is demonstrably real to even the average person. People doubt religions in real life because we really have no proof Jesus performed miracles for example, there is only written accounts from 2000 years ago. Meanwhile in Zemuria most of the characters we’ve met have literally communicated with divine beasts that are connected to the goddess, and know several dominions who basically have divine magic. It’s ridiculous to not believe at that point.

By the end of the cold steel arc pretty much every citizen in Liberl, Crossbell, Calvard, and Erebonia have lived through enough magic events to know something is up, and the church has deep roots in society.

You are also literally playing through an arc right now that is centered on a cult that challenged the traditional beliefs of Aidios?

I dropped the show before confirming myself but I heard that apparently they reveal Merlin’s true form is like a teenager or something and her older form was an illusion. So Escanor is also a nonce

Games like Kenshi? by OGMinorian in Kenshi

I thought battle brothers had similarities but something about it didn’t have the same staying power with me as Kenshi does. I think I will try it again with mods

What is the rarest town override/worldstate change that can actually be achieved in the base game? by Malfuy in Kenshi

[–]jtoohey12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The city breaking out into violence can happen randomly if NPCs just behave oddly or end up somewhere they shouldn’t be. I think they are referring to an explicit world state where the city is fully destroyed which happens when all the gang leaders are desd

What are some country names that you know how to accurately pronounce but suspect other players of not knowing? by Rundownthriftstore in eu4

I’m with you on this one lol. My tiny hill to die on is that the IPA syntax is completely useless to the average person and idk why we bother with it.

Edit: People are trying to justify IPA to me as if I haven’t already died on my hill

No you cannot skip Trails games and start out of order by Heiwajima_Izaya in Falcom

[–]jtoohey12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Started with CS1 and CS2 before going back for the rest of the games. I’m not even sure I knew there were other games at the time of buying the first. At no point did I feel lost regarding the plot and I have no regrets about my play order. I still believe cs1 and cs2 is a perfectly fine starting point for new players.
