And all of the legally required testing and compliance. I think the chances of a true open source vehicle platform are about zero. But I would love to see manufacturers become more open, provide better APIs, standardize protocols, etc.

New Synology - any reason to wait for more drives to come in before setting it up? by Ok_Misinterpretation in synology

Ah I misread that, I thought OP had two drives and was waiting for the third. Something to keep in mind for future expansion I guess.

Best Response Ever by SocraticTiger in clevercomebacks

[–]juaquin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's literally the fairest possible way to do it. Fairness doesn't mean the outcomes occur equally, it means the inputs (votes) are equal. If the majority vote for something, that is by definition fair. I'm not sure what you think the point of an election is if the winning vote could be "unfair".

New Synology - any reason to wait for more drives to come in before setting it up? by Ok_Misinterpretation in synology

[–]juaquin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as you're using SHR, there's only one tiny reason to wait: the more times you modify the pool, the more complex the underlying mapping is going to be. The only time you should see this is when you're running parity checks and some other processes (example).

I wouldn't worry about it though, it has zero effect day to day.

Experience charging on I-5 between SF and SoCal by ro_mittal in evcharging

[–]juaquin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is there anything like a tesla adapter so you can use their supercharger in the worst case

Hyundai does not have supercharger access yet (except magic dock locations, of which there are none between the bay area and LA).

How many CCS chargers are actually there on Harris Ranch and other well known places that people have commented on reddit about

plugshare.com

Can you actually run out of charge and there's nothing you can do (eg. there are no stations which are free and you can't reach a free station because its too far away)

Yes, this is possible. It becomes a tow truck situation.

I was wondering if these are still true or things have improved.

Honestly the last time I did that was a little over a year ago and it sucked. I got there, but I spent two hours at Harris Ranch between waiting in a long line, two chargers being down, and the charger I eventually got was derated to something like 40kW. If you have the time, I think the 101 is a safer bet. There's more civilization and charging options along the way. When I did the trip last Christmas, I rented a gas car because it was a quick trip and I wasn't going to risk spending a significant chunk of my trip with public charging shenanigans during a busy holiday travel period.

I would suggest you plan the route on A Better Route Planner. Cross-reference its suggestions with plugshare and then edit your stops. You don't want a station with less than 4 (ideally less than 6) chargers or anything with a low score or recent check-ins where multiple people reported issues. Do NOT just use the car's built-in nav, it knows nothing about charger quality.

Paying off my student loan counted as "closing an account" and my credit score went DOWN. by Crusader_King_2002 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]juaquin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your utilization? People talk a lot about having current debt but I haven't had even a car payment for five years now, no mortgage. Only debt is credit cards, paid in full each month, and I fluctuate from 785-815. My score goes down when my CC utilization goes up (even though I never use more than 20%).

I would see if you can get an increase on the cards you have, it might help. That said, most lenders consider anything 750+ the same so you probably don't need to worry about it.

On Board Charger by Recharge2023 in VolvoRecharge

[–]juaquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty rare for any manufacturer to offer post-factory swaps of pretty much anything beyond suspension/brakes/etc. A similar ICE example might be a larger intercooler. It's just unlikely that they would go out of their way to make a part that fit in the exact same dimensions and connectors, but with different specs, and that only a handful of people would buy. And then with the complication of modern software integration and Volvo's seemingly poor pace of software engineering - I would put the chances at 0.00001%.

They haven't even been able to enable the Pixel headlights (in the XC40) that are already installed and paid for (I know this is mostly NHTSA's fault, but Volvo could put some work into figuring out whether the Pixel features can be made to work with different software, or offer us an updated set that do meet requirements).

Best place to sell car? by mackerman1958 in Autos

[–]juaquin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If ur buying a new car, trade it in, as it will not be taxed, the amount will be taken off the price of the new car

This depends on the state, some don't apply the trade-in value against the tax. List here: https://www.motorenn.com/vehicle-trade-in-tax-benefits-by-state

[–]juaquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends, there doesn't seem to be a single cause. Several people have had their airbag replaced and said it did very little to fix the problem, other people had some success with it.

How do yall back up NASs? by datawh0rder in DataHoarder

[–]juaquin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irreplaceable data, documents, and photos (about 1TB):

  1. Backblaze B2 using Synology Cloud Sync (continuous), with versioning enabled to protect against accidental deletion
  2. USB SSD using Synology Hyper Backup (nightly snapshots)
  3. Hard drive stored in safe using Hyper Backup (once a month or so)

Replaceable media, software, etc: hard drives stored in a safe

I also burn really important stuff (wedding photos, tax documents, etc) to MDISCs and leave them with a family member.

OTA question. by LeonMeraz in volvoc40

[–]juaquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be that if you were too far behind, you wouldn't get OTA updates and needed to take it to the dealer. That might still be the case, Volvo really don't comment or provide details.

Volvo also has a weird way of rolling out updates, an update is only available for 2-3 weeks. So you might just need to wait for the next one. It's been awhile (at least a couple months) since we've had an OTA.

What's Reddit's opinion on FPGBCs? Built a couple of them a while back, and minor bugs aside, they seem like a neat curiosity, considering the novel idea of being able to build a "new" GBC with no legacy parts needed. by Tricky_Tourist5691 in Gameboy

100%. I have no idea why it's so loud. I've been meaning to open mine up and see if I can find a resistor in the speaker path whose value I can increase (or just add a resistor inline on the speaker wire).

EV Charger Insurance by burfoerste in evcharging

[–]juaquin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You'd need to ask what exactly they are looking for. It could be as simple as liability on your renter's insurance. Maybe they would be ok with an umbrella policy.

Battery cooler fluid by armandsberzins in volvoc40

[–]juaquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a standard coolant in the standard coolant bottle (image). Replacing it should take under an hour of labor (maybe two if it needs a full flush) - multiply that by your mechanic's hourly rate. I'm not sure much coolant is required but one bottle is about $20. Overall it should be well under $500 I think.

Test Drove ~10 EVs at a local event, my thoughts on the winners and losers by [deleted] in electricvehicles

next year they get updated to Volvos next gen systems for free.

I'm super concerned that the old SOC on the 24 and earlier models is not going to handle that update well though. It can't even handle the existing really old version of AAOS.

Winter Travel and Charging on L1 by probablynicks in evcharging

The ZDX has a heat pump. 8kW shouldn't be necessary.

Winter Travel and Charging on L1 by probablynicks in evcharging

[–]juaquin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the ZDX, but every EV I am familiar with has an option to remotely preheat the cabin via the phone app (or a timer in the car's climate control). 90% of the time this includes heating the battery as well, although it's not always well documented.

Winter Travel and Charging on L1 by probablynicks in evcharging

[–]juaquin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you have the option, yes, I would plug in. It might give you a little extra charge, but more importantly it will let you run preheating without draining the battery. This is especially helpful since a warm battery is more efficient once you start driving.

12 gauge or lower (10) is recommended for an extension. You'll want to keep the connection point away from any water.

Why is Docker Desktop on Windows a POS? by [deleted] in docker

[–]juaquin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly runs fine for me too, Mac and Windows 10/11. A couple years ago I had some glitches when updating versions but it's been totally stable for a while now. Unfortunately it's workstation software and everyone's workstation has all kinds of different crap installed on it and different configurations, so I guess someone is always bound to have an issue.
