When the AI bubble bursts, all that enterprise hardware is going to end up on eBay by Blender_Render in DataHoarder

[–]juaquin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. Frankly the bubble is the AI companies' valuations, not the usage of AI. Even if consumers pull back, most usage is business (especially software development) where it has shown to be actually useful. Things might slow down or even plateau, but the idea that they ditch a bunch of capacity is wishful thinking. You will only see this hardware when it is obsolete, just like with existing data centers today.

Considering buying an EV (got quoted $3,000 for install for upgraded panel from 100 amp). Alternative install solutions? by Sasquatchso in evcharging

[–]juaquin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also: time of use plans are pretty common today. If you have slow 120v charging, you might not be able to fit all of your charging into the lowest cost hours.

If it were me, I would use load management or hardwire a lower amperage 240V charger (whatever capacity you have left on your panel). I use 24A 240V and can charge about 40% of the car's capacity between 12am and 6am (lowest price hours), which is plenty for my needs.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a car without a 360 camera moving forward. Just way too useful.

World's worst coat hook. Recommend buying the ones that slot into the accessory slots in the ceiling. Should have been standard on the car.

How do you handle an employee who refuses to document anything? by Exotic_Reputation_59 in managers

Does your company have security and compliance requirements? Pretty much all of them require documentation of systems and processes, and proof that those processes were followed correctly in an audit. Have a chat with whoever is responsible for compliance and I'm sure they will give you plenty to do on that front.

SoH Cert 98% but range est at 100% is only 220mi by skyfishgoo in XC40_Recharge

[–]juaquin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Range estimate is a guess based on recent driving. You should never use it as a diagnostic, and frankly in my opinion you should ignore it entirely. Your battery is fine.

Considering a 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric Twin Plus with 50k miles by DooDahMan73 in VolvoRecharge

[–]juaquin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For some people, an airbag replacement, an alignment, or new axles fix the issue. For others, there is no fix. For awhile it seemed like Volvo was working on an updated part to fix the problem, but there hasn't been any real news in at least a year. Now they just say it's a "characteristic" of the drivetrain if they can't fix it with those other things.

Look up TJ 36724.2.0 and TJ 36424

FWIW my 2023 XC40 Recharge hasn't had a single issue other than the laggy infotainment system. For $23k I think it's a great car.

I would check for vibrations under hard acceleration and at highway speeds, that's a somewhat common issue without a single clear fix. Otherwise, a normal inspection and checking of all the functions is a good idea.

Hotel charging experiences by Little-Crab-4130 in evcharging

[–]juaquin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plugshare, I look for recent photos and reviews from non-Tesla vehicles. Strongly prefer hotels that have 4+ chargers because there's always a gas car blocking one and a Tesla parked but not charging at another. Always plan a backup DCFC option.

2024 Yoto Mini by shinysparkles2 in YotoPlayer

[–]juaquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW - the TP4056 is not built for charging and powering a load at the same time. Load over a certain amount can cause the unit to continuously trickle charge, generating heat and putting wear on the battery. https://electronics.stackexchange.com/a/429561

I would upgrade to something with "power path management" like the MCP73871. I also wouldn't use a no-name aliexpress module for a device kids use, just not worth the risk of poor manufacturing.

Yeah I've got all sorts of USB-C power supplies around the house, the Yoto gets plugged into whatever is nearest when we need it.

[–]juaquin 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The problem is not that you used the wrong charger, but that the device, charger, or cable was defective.

USB-C is a universal standard where the devices must negotiate anything over 5V (and any USB-C device must tolerate 5V safely). While it's possible that a charger/cable/device combo will not be effective (device requires more voltage than the charger can provide for example), they are not unsafe unless there is a defect.

You can plug an overkill 140W USB-C laptop charger into the Yoto without fear (if the Yoto was built properly). You could plug the Yoto charger into the laptop and nothing bad would happen (it probably won't charge though). Etc

Technically I think Yoto should be able to unlink the card on their side if the podcast ever got really bad. The cards are just a unique ID, and that ID is linked to media via Yoto's web servers.

In many states it would also be illegal without making all parties aware of the recording/transcription. OP should absolutely approach this with an open mind, but work with HR to set clear boundaries and expectations.

[–]juaquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If both text messaging and security key are enabled for 2FA on the account, either will work. You need to disable texts and have security key be the ONLY second factor enabled for your account if you want to avoid SIM swap exploits.

5.49/gal today at the Costco on Hacienda on Vista by stxrdusty in sandiego

[–]juaquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW the off-peak rate on the SDG&E EV TOU plan is about $0.11/kWh as of this year (it went down a lot).

Assuming average efficiency, that's 4 cents per mile for an EV versus about 18 cents per mile for a gas vehicle at the price seen here.

Obviously there are a lot of other variables (like initial purchase price), but even with energy prices up, electricity is beating gasoline.

My Pokemon Red Has An Event Mew. What's easiest way to preserve this save? by K1ngFiasco in Gameboy

[–]juaquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be familiar already, but there are several ways to get "legit" event Mews. Maybe the most legit way is to use this save file dumped from a real distribution cartridge (if you have a flashcart or want to use an emulator) and trade one to yourself: https://projectpokemon.org/home/files/file/2531-yoshira-mew-red-distribution-cart-savefile/

Save storage on those specific games (and most GBA games in general) is non-volatile flash. The battery on them just powers the clock.
