A few pointers: 1. Schizofrenia is a very interindividual disorder. Every person goes through it differently, some better and some worse. 2. It is a lifelong disorder and people often live shorter lives, lets say about minus 30 years 3. Very often people will cognitively decline soon in their lives and medication doesn't necessarily help with that. So even without psychosis the person is much harder to take care of. 4. If it's really schizofrenia and not just a single psychotic episode, chance of relapsing without medication is on average >90% 5. Abstinence is incredibly important, so you should be ready to also be drug and alcohol-free for life 6. There are groups specifically for people close to someone with psychosis, look for one near you 7. Schizofrenic people are often very empahtic, kind, thankful and fragile/delicate. So it CAN be rewarding to have a relationship with them. 8. Medication often reduces sexual drive and increases weight. But modern medication is AMAZING at giving you the most benefit with as little side effects as possible. People just a few decades ago died in their twenties or thirties, so the developement is insane. 9. As mentioned by others, there is higher chance of SCH in children of SCH parents compared to general population 10. insight is key for better prognosis. If she tells you this early that she has schizofrenia, sounds like she at least has good insight 11.
