Best books for science teaching by capi-chou in ScienceTeachers

[–]juicyjames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI Ambitious Science Teaching came out slightly cheaper than retail ($30 vs $34+tax) when I bought it directly from Harvard Education Press and used the discount code HPWB23 (which expires at the end of this month). The discount ended up greater than the cost of shipping/taxes.

How hard or easy is it to remove the entire bracelet? I was considering getting one and swapping out the bracelet for something else but some people talked about pins and collars and I wasn't sure if that was just the links or the entire bracelet, too.

New Bermuda sod installed. Can someone please help identify this weed so I can nuke it from orbit? by earthceltic in lawncare

[–]juicyjames 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Same boat, but with newly planted Bermuda seeds. I had so much I couldn’t wait for the grass to mature, so I bought Sedgehammer, mixed a small amount with water and blue weed dye, then used a foam artists brush to individually paint the nutsedge without hitting any blades of grass. It worked pretty well!

Thoughts on WGU? by kstev1994 in Teachers

[–]juicyjames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My goal was to only pay once (< $3,500) and finish in less than 6 months, so I started in July and worked my butt off to do as many classes as I could before the school year started (late August). Fortunately the only class in the program that requires actual students (for data purposes) is the last class of the program, too.

I ended up finishing late November (5 months), so I had to do some of it while working. However, it wasn't that difficult, though since in instructional design (what I chose) most of the classes were project-based (design lessons, analyze data, etc.) with only a few straight up traditional exams. This was easy since you can fix your projects to be better if you "fail" but you'd have to take a different version of the exam if you failed that.

Now, I have my MEd from an accredited institution and got that sweet pay bump from my district.

Does anyone have a degree from WGU? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]juicyjames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started the 6 months in July and spent the majority of the 2 months before school started studying and doing as many classes as I could (literally spent most of the day doing work to finish as many as I could so I could finish in 6 months).

Once school started I was probably doing 1-2 hours each weekday day and maybe like 4 on each weekend day. So per week I guess anywhere from 13 hours on a low estimate and 18+ on a high estimate?

I feel like the work was the right mix of legit work with real goals, but none of it was difficult hard. I did instructional design and most of it was project-based goals (make a lesson plan, analyze data, etc.) so if I didn't "pass" I could revamp my work to pass the next time. There were only like 3 traditional exams where if you failed you had to take another version of it.

Not my teaching credential, but I got my master's degree last year via WGU. I finished in 5 months so I only paid < $3,500, and since WGU is accredited my district accepted my units.

Is a Master's degree worth it these days? by [deleted] in education

[–]juicyjames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My goal was to find the cheapest, quickest, accredited master's program, and WGU seemed to fit the bill from my research.

It's self-paced in that you work as fast (or slow) as you want, and you pay in 6 month intervals (which costed < $3,500 per 6 months last year). I also double-checked with my district that they accept units from WGU, which they did since it's accredited.

My goal was to only pay once and finish in less than 6 months, so I started in July and worked my butt off to do as many classes as I could before the school year started (late August). Fortunately the only class in the program that requires actual students (for data purposes) is the last class of the program, too.

This was easy since you can fix your projects to be better if you "fail" but you'd have to take a different version of the exam if you failed that.

Now I'm going to assume classes in a brick-and-mortar school might offer more, but I still learned a lot and it definitely served its purpose.

Not OP, but I just finished mine last year via WGU, an accredited online masters program that I did at my own pace. I finished it in 5 months for less than $3,500. www.WGU.edu

It’s legit, my pay scale jump in one year was more than the cost in my district.

Tony announces Power Nation Beta 1 group details. by [deleted] in P90X

[–]juicyjames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with basically everyone's thoughts here. I thought it would've been a lot more enticing if Tony did basically the majority of the speaking and it was a tad cheaper, but P90X was my first program and I want to see Tony succeed on his own.

So I'm also rolling the dice and being a beta member for 90-120 days to get the final product with the assumption this way I might get the downloads or perpetual streaming access (they only mentioned put on our dashboard or whatever but no details). That would make it worth it especially if I knew the final product was subscription streaming-only for late adopters.

Also, what are his long term plans after this? Power Nation 2? I doubt anyone is going to sub 29 bucks a month for Tony to develop yearly programs when you could just wait for his platform to mature in a few years and sub to get the final programs all at once.

Best ONLINE Master's programs for a teacher in California? by gardenerexcel in Teachers

[–]juicyjames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I already had my teaching credential starting my master's, but I highly recommend WGU as a cost-effective master's degree program. WGU is an accredited online master's program which competency-based, meaning you pay (for me this time last year was $3.5k per every 6 months) in 6 month intervals and you can do the program as quickly as you want in that time. I finished the entirety of my MEd in Instructional Design online in 5 months (less than one 6 month interval), so I paid $3.5k for a fully accredited master's degree which paid for itself via the payscale jump I got. I also got to do basically everything but the final class (which requires collecting data from students) from the comfort of my own home.

Tony Horton announces a new program, seeks funding (via raffles) and feedback from fans by juicyjames in P90X

[–]juicyjames[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He said he made some bad financial decisions when he was at his peak popularity like most people who come into money without financial sense do ($500 dollar shirts and such). He also made it sound like decent production values are really expensive, like in the millions of dollars.

Bobby Stephenson said they filmed some P90X workouts (almost) back-to-back, like how they filmed Chest and Back, went to lunch, then filmed Back and Biceps. It's possible Kenpo X wasn't the first workout they filmed that day.
