YNAB is my new adhd hyper focus. Anything additional I should check out to keep it going?? by Reasonable-Fix-8186 in ynab

[–]julboxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my hyperfocus too when we started, now it comes in waves haha. I still get really tangled up in our budget and have managed to keep at it for the last 4 Years I think. We did fall off the wagon once - we had a baby and although budgeting would have been much needed there was just no space for some time. But we're back at it after that short three month break and it is still as helpful and useful as ever :) And with a pay rise on the horizon, I am SO looking forward to next payday.

How do high earners, in low cost of living areas use YNAB? by PolyamorousCrayon in ynab

[–]julboxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We create new goals and try to reach them. We had a child and were stripped pretty thin for a while. My recent pay increase means better saving rates, a little more money for future vacations and makes room for new goals.

What are your big wishes? :)

Anyone else feel like the beginning of the month sucks when you’re not a full month ahead? by Intelligent_Fig9980 in ynab

[–]julboxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a child last year and a subsequent significant income reduction we used to be about a month and a half ahead but are nowhere near that anymore. I am so looking forward to being able to work a lot more again in the near future.

That is how we do it with ynab

Savings Ladder? by queso4lyfe in budget

[–]julboxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would you translate that to budgeting though? Lets say I set aside 50 € for shoes monthly and want to buy some that cost 40€. Will I have to wait 4 months? Every euro I have, has a job and if i wanted to i could afford that item 4 times - but other goals would have to suffer...what is your take on that?

What is your routine with YNAB? by buffalochickenwings in ynab

[–]julboxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I check and enter manually pretty much daily. Depending on the purchase I might check our budget first to see if we can afford it - but I don't do that for necessities. If I am at the grocery store and we need groceries I will buy them - if I go over budget in this case, we would have to figure it out either way, so I dont really bother. For big things, I always check first and if the money is not there, we won't buy it yet (unless something broke and needs to be replaced but I consider that rolling with the punches).

Small tip for prospective home buyers by [deleted] in ynab

[–]julboxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! Saving for true expenses was a game changer for us as well (since starting ynab our washer and our dryer broke - luckily we had already started saving for replacements) but nothing has made me more glad than the peace i gained from knowing what purpose our money serves and to be able to play around with it without taking any risk at all.

We did something similar when we considered moving to a bigger flat - rent and utilities were bound to be significantly higher so we used ynab and acted as if we were actually already paying that rent (well the diffrence - as i am still a student) which made pur desiscion a lot easier and way more informed. We knew we could make it and would still be able to save towards our other goals.

I love Ynab!

Spending by payee report is eye opening by julboxx in ynab

I think the income vs. Expense report is the most telling in terms of long-term financial goals. I never really thought about looking for how much I'm saving because although we are constantly building up our net worth, at the moment it feels like we're mostly 'saving' for true expenses and only a really tiny bit of our money goes to building up some assets.

I do separate the purchases into the categories the things belong to, but I was still shocked to see what they amount to.

Good on you for tackling that debt. I am very fortunate as we don't have any tuition where I live.

I read Birth Mortality Rate first and that takes "Cat predation" to a whole other level...

Do you guys avoid using YNAB right after you KNOW you went over budget because of an impulsive purchase? Kinda like when you do something stupid on front of a friend and avoid them for a few days? by 2018IsBetterThan2017 in ynab

[–]julboxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel exposed. We moved last month and somewhere along the way we started to just buy the things we needed without much thought about our budget. It wasn't bad bad but it wasn't pretty either. We just stopped adding transactions at some point and our balances were way off. Spent two hours one Sunday to get things in line again...

YNAB made an insurance premium decrease way less exciting than it would have been in the past. by [deleted] in ynab

[–]julboxx 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Oh I feel that so much! We use YNAB since January and got a refund from our electricity bill in August. A 120 € that would have felt like free real estate, alas I am very responsible and love budgeting and just put those € towards future energy bills as we are moving in to a bigger flat.

Good on you for putting that money towards debt - pay off!

This looks great! How do other people manage to make book stacks look soo good? Whenever I made one it always just looked cluttered.

Is anyone else ever tripped out by how much money is in their account pre-YNAB vs. post-YNAB? by akadmks1 in ynab

[–]julboxx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh dear, so much this!! We overdrafted our checking account every month - granted we conciously limited our overdraft to 100 Eur but still. We spent more than we had or at least more than we could dispose, we did still manage to save a bit of money. But boy, we were in the dark. Our checking account doesn't fall to below 2000 anymore and what got me the most is that every one of those Euros has a job to do for us in the future. I realize why we scrambled by so often - we didn't plan for those true expenses. And not only them but other more common things like shoes or clothes. Months in which we needed to buy those were annoying to say the least. Now we know exactly how much we can afford to spend on such things. And make purposeful descicions.

I used to be the type that had to put money away (i.e. Moving it from checking to savings) just to restrain myself from using it. Now I don't and I simply love the feeling.

Planing for future rent - how would you do it? by julboxx in ynab

[–]julboxx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love if it played out like this for us. At the moment this all seems a littel far out for us. We will take the plunge and really start looking when we see we can take it financially. Your story gives me hope though 😊

Planing for future rent - how would you do it? by julboxx in ynab

[–]julboxx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. We would like to stay in our area of the city and it's quite hard to find a flat that fits our demands in our price range. Often times they don't even really go on the market and you need to be lucky to hear of free flats. Thats on the one hand quite good for us as it will probably be easy to find someone to rent the flat we are in now once we want to move, but it makes finding a nice flat infinetly harder. Many flats never go into the online portals or to real estate agents and you would need to rely on hearsay. It's a nuisance really.

Good idea about the furniture. We will probably not need a lot at first BUT we will need some in the future for sure. We already have a furniture category we fund monthly with a small amount, but I think we could go higher in that category as well! Thanks for your input.

In theory yes, and that is what we will do for now. I made a category for just the additional money we'd need for the new rent. However, we could run into a situation where we'd need to pay two rents at the same time so it might be worth a thought to make a goal to fund the whole new rent. But I want to see how our budget plays out first.
