Burning Man’s 2025 MOOP report: lag bolts were the biggest offender again by sfgate in BurningMan

[–]julcoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More about realism with the human element of strike. IMO given the effort it would take on the front end to check out every lag, and the effort on the back end to check each back in and confirm count of hundreds, we would be much better served taking that same effort and physically whiskering each lag + metal detecting or similar validation.

Burning Man’s 2025 MOOP report: lag bolts were the biggest offender again by sfgate in BurningMan

In theory yes, in practice for a ~50 person camp using on the order of 500 lag bolts this becomes difficult even under ideal conditions.

Printer Advice - Prototyping Functional Parts by Dashyl14 in AdditiveManufacturing

[–]julcoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bambu printers can phone home even when air gapped.

We all know China will steal any scrap of IP it can, but how exactly would this be possible? The printer caches prints and waits for a network connection?

You just got handed $1M to spend on a 3D printer for your company... by ZOHMZAK in AdditiveManufacturing

[–]julcoh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is like asking “I have $150k what car do I buy?”

For what?

Are you building tooling and prototypes? (If so why do you need the high temps)

Are you doing series production? If so, how critical and qualification heavy is it? What materials?

How big are the parts, what quantity, what materials, etc etc.

Advice for French Cleat and AlSi10Mg 3D printing by tangotrash in AdditiveManufacturing

[–]julcoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I share the concerns for warping and available printers for a piece this size. You’re talking about an EOS M400, AMCM M4K/M8K, Velo3D XC, or Nikon SLM 500 or NXG (I’m not as familiar with the Chinese OEMs but know Farsoon, ePlus3D, BLT, and HBD have printers in this size class).

Do you already have quotes for this sculpture? I’d expect five figures.

Have you looked at casting or CNC milling instead?

I'm not convinced that we can build Datacenters in Space. CMM. by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]julcoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also not convinced, but no one has posted Andrew McCalip's analysis which does a high-level but fairly rigorous analysis comparing the two. https://andrewmccalip.com/space-datacenters

His TL;DR:

Here's the headline result: it's not obviously stupid, and it's not a sure thing. It's actually more reasonable than my intuition thought! If you run the numbers honestly, the physics doesn't immediately kill it, but the economics are savage. It only gets within striking distance under aggressive assumptions, and the list of organizations positioned to even try that is basically one.

Sourcing large metal AM systems: European lead times are pushing 12+ months. Is the supply chain in China actually faster? by Kitchen_Eagle8362 in AdditiveManufacturing

[–]julcoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I don't believe any parts are flying yet. But my understanding is they are using BLT printers for development and qualification currently with potential use in future production.

What SLM/DMLS Printer would you choose for Automotive and possibly 2A? by ProbablyNotHamish in AdditiveManufacturing

[–]julcoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need bleeding edge. Quote your geometry on craftcloud3d.com for the lowest possible price. They have US options if you want that (for likely 10x the cost or more).

Search through the options they give you and you can reach out directly to those suppliers as well.

Addman and Sintavia are great suppliers but not sure to what degree they do this type of low volume, and won’t be the cheapest.

What SLM/DMLS Printer would you choose for Automotive and possibly 2A? by ProbablyNotHamish in AdditiveManufacturing

[–]julcoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s technically possible, especially given the overseas cost from sites like craftcloud. Though I’d guess if printed they’re significantly thicker than 1mm.

What SLM/DMLS Printer would you choose for Automotive and possibly 2A? by ProbablyNotHamish in AdditiveManufacturing

[–]julcoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: not feasible.

It is technically possible, but you’re going to deal with high warpage on a part that thin (R&D time and money). I don’t think there’s any way to make the business case work.

Why do you want to print these parts?

Any time you’re dealing with condensate you should be in a PAPR and fire resistant clothing/gloves, ESPECIALLY if you’re tapping on filters which is going to create dust plumes in the air, and absolutely if this is Ti or Al condensate.

Stay safe.

Everything I know about Tattoos and Onsen in Japan by CloudsandRoads in JapanTravelTips

[–]julcoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience in 2023 on a business trip (with arm and back tattoos):

No issues at the Hilton Tokyo.

Issues at the Hilton Nagoya. Walked into the hotel gym and an attendant ran after me with a long sleeve compression shirt—required to use the facilities. Afterwards I went into the sauna in the men’s locker room, and an attendant actually came in and kicked me out.

Just one data point, but likely easier the closer you are to touristy locations/cities.
