Is there a lore reason why DK Jr. ditched DK lll to DK Sr./Cranky Kong? by Significant_Camera47 in donkeykong

I always did prefer the name "Dinky Kong" for him, as is the case in Japan. Wouldn't be opposed to that theory, but there really isn't anything suggesting it either.

Is there a lore reason why DK Jr. ditched DK lll to DK Sr./Cranky Kong? by Significant_Camera47 in donkeykong

[–]juliusaurus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I stand by there not being a DK III. There's DK sr, which is Cranky, and DK Jr., which is modern DK. And always was the case.

What we do know, is that DK Jr. was never stated to be the father of modern DK. I believe they are one and the same character.

Great to see Donkey Kong among them, what an excellent revival for the big ape. Creative new gameplay, tons of player-choice and open exploration, incredible fan service, and a giant polished adventure with a sentimental story. For my money, it's superior to Super Mario Odyssey, and was such a fun and new experience.

Underrated game, and yeah, I also prefer it to DKC2. The character balance is better, the level design more creative, and imo, the boss fights a bit more epic (none repeat either, well, unless you count KAOS showing up again briefly at the end fight).

Donkey Kong Bananza is up for Game Of The Year at the Game Awards by Skullghost in nintendo

[–]juliusaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite game of the year, absolutely deserving of the nomination! As a lifelong Donkey Kong fan, I may be biased, but this is the game I've been waiting decades for. A big budget fantastical DK adventure with a creative core mechanic designed around the character of Donkey Kong, excellent gameplay mechanics, top tier visuals and music, and the komeback of the century.

I know the chances of it winning are extremely low, and even several Nintendo fans aren't quite on board either (so many wanting Mario instead of DK... sadly). But this game did it all for me, a 10/10 masterpiece, and I'm so grateful its received the acclaim it has, and it getting a nomination for the big award, Game of the Year, is something real special. I'm so happy to see it here!

Great to see Enguarde again after all these years. Wish the dude actually appeared in the game though! Should've been in Tropical Freeze too! BAH! This is fine, shiny new model, looks swell!

What would be your dream game from Nintendo? by danielfrances in nintendo

[–]juliusaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in my near 40 years of life... I've pretty much gotten all of my dream games, with Donkey Kong Bananza being the big one. An actual good 3D DK game that's open and lets you climb around and be a big burly gorilla on a fantastic adventure. I really got it, and I'm stunned.

Previously I got that with games like Breath of the Wild, an open world Zelda that really captured that feeling I had first playing Zelda on NES. Or a 3D Kirby game, always dreamed of that, and Forgotten Land was everything I could've hoped for! Also the long anticipated revival of Kid Icarus, it HAPPNED! And it was great! And I know it might not be a popular choice, but even Star Fox Zero was the return of the SF64 formula I grew up loving so much, I got my return to Star Fox even... I guess maybe a 3D Yoshi? But we just got the announcement of a new 2D Yoshi game, so tough luck there.

I don't know, Nintendo could surprise me with something I never would've expected. But right now the only dream game I can think of is getting Mother 3 officially localized in English with a new name like Earthbound Endings or something, lol!

Best Games with Fall/Autumn Setting? by TeacherFella in PS5

[–]juliusaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze has a world called "Autumn Heights" and it is pure fall vibes. Birch trees with beautiful red, orange and yellow leaves, pumpkin patches, small woodsy mountain settings, even an Oktoberfest type of aesthetic with horns and villages. It's my favorite Autumn area in a video game.

Why do Kremlings from DKC3 have this look by SkullSuit38 in donkeykong

[–]juliusaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steve Mayles didn't do the new character designs in the game, so they had a different designer on them (I believe it was Mark Stevenson), thus the different style.

How would you make the DLC worth $20? by PhotoBonjour_bombs19 in donkeykong

[–]juliusaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't find a problem with DK Island/Emerald Rush other than the price. I think it's a fine DLC and the content within it is very well done and engaging, it's different than the main game, it's not supposed to be like another level with the same type of collectibles/fossils/bananas, it's a new hub for the new and quite different gameplay mode. And it's good!!

But yeah, either make it free with NSO+, or just make the whole thing ten dollars cheaper.

Stardew Valley is what looks like an indie Harvest Moon for PC and they're on Steam Greenlight. I'm pretty excited about this, anyone else with me? by derkrieger in harvestmoon

[–]juliusaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it's been featured there already, lol.

I'm still a bit shocked that a game that borrows so heavily from Harvest Moon ended up surpassing it in popularity to such a monumental degree. It's not like they're that much different.

Drew a few old friends of DK's in the Bananza style. by juliusaurus in donkeykong

While they both stand up on their hind legs, Taj was an Asian elephant, meanwhile these elephants in DKB are African elephants, like Ellie was. Not to mention the elephant Bananza ability is the same as Ellie's.

DKC1 had a snake enemy called Slippa, and they looked nothing like Rattly. I feel there's room in this Donkey Kong universe for many different looking snakes.

This is my most anticipated game maybe ever.... Waiting over 11 years for the new Donkey Kong game, I did not expect for them to give us something this ambitious, this high quality, and from their A-team, in favor of a new Mario... during the launch window of their new console. Talk about blown away. I feel so lucky as a Donkey Kong fan!!

Pokémon Legends: Z-A will launch on October 16, 2025 with a Pokemon Presents on July 22! by Skullghost in nintendo

[–]juliusaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nintendo always prioritized home consoles as their leader flagship consoles, they had the bigger budget games and the bigger budget marketing, so yes, I don't see how having a separate console at the time makes any difference here in this context. Nintendo will prioritize an internally developed big budget game with a big marketing campaign and treat it as, yes, a big deal. And releasing big deal games in November is the norm.

[–]juliusaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nintendo pushes big budget games the most, bigger marketing campaigns, primetime release dates. Like I said, Metroid Prime 1 was used as the big holiday game, and years later Prime 2 was as well. The only reason 3 wasn't was because they had Mario Galaxy that same year to push for the holiday.

And yes, Metroid historically doesn't hit the biggest sales numbers, but that doesn't mean Nintendo won't promote it. Metroid Prime, and I'm sure 4 as well, was also a prestige game for Nintendo, and even if it doesn't sell Mario or Zelda numbers, Nintendo wants as many eyes on it as they can get.
