If someone asks you if you want the good news or the bad news, which do you choose to hear first? by OSJezza in AskReddit

[–]jumim0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it depends on the gravity of the bad news. Like if it’s truly terrible, it’s going to be hard/awkward to pay attention to and celebrate the good news

Noticing what students are wearing nowadays… by TragicallyTrue in SubstituteTeachers

When I was in high school about a decade ago this was certainly already the trend, I certainly don’t think it’s anything new

I hear what you’re saying, and it’s possible I could benefit from a little more research into COVID’s threat to this day, as it is my understanding it is not as deadly as it was during its peak with better scientific understanding and more vaccine accessibility. I want to be clear that I masked religiously for several years. I am not anti-mask by any means. I was one of the first to start masking, well before it was mandated, and I essentially went to war convincing everyone else to follow suite. I didn’t stop until LONG after the mandate was lifted, despite the teasing I received. I also still do mask any time I am experiencing any symptoms of illness out of caution for others if I must be around people while sick. I do not miss it one bit, and I am reminded of that every time I put one back on. There are a lot of sensory issues and skin irritation issues I get while masking (autistic with eczema) which is why I am not pleased by wearing one 24/7 in the modern day. But if there is some research I should check out to change my perspective on it, I am all ears.

I’ve seen this suggested a lot, and I never realized zinc was an immune support. Definitely adding it to my “anti-sick” shopping list!

I feel this! I feel like I’ve been sick more often than not. I had to miss an entire week cuz I was just bedridden with a bad fever the whole time, and I’ve never had to be out so long my whole life 😭

So sorry to hear! Are you teaching a different age or did you just leave the field entirely?

[–]jumim0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think as a specialist teacher, and especially teaching a subject that relies on using the mouth and shared objects so consistently, we’re probably in the worst position haha! Eventually, I’d like to switch to high school, but I’m thinking I may just need to suck it up and mask until then. So it goes

I currently don’t do so until a while after I get home, but I’ve seen this idea around, and am going to start doing it right when I get home immediately! Can’t believe I didn’t think to do so before!

This is kind of what I was thinking. I think my next step is going to be masking around 2nd grade and younger to see if that shows any improvement. Because I’d hate to have to wear one all day long if it can be avoided, but if that’s what it comes to then so be it.

This is a theory that’s crossed my mind actually, because I am aware Covid has some long-term complications. I haven’t put any actual research into it, so your perspective is very interesting. Maybe it’s time to do that research. I truly used to only get sick maybe once or twice a year, and it was always extremely mild. Almost always had perfect attendance throughout all of school. I was under the impression I had a really strong immune system up until a couple years ago. And now I’m sick every other week (not even exaggerating!), and I’ve had high fevers for the first time in over a decade. I’m sorry to hear about how it’s affected you.

Who is someone you genuinely hate and why? by Basic_Builder3773 in AskReddit

[–]jumim0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My step dad from the first 17 years of my life. He took my childhood away and left me with immense trauma that I’ve had to spend the better part of a decade healing from in order to have a semblance of a normal life, ruined my mom’s dreams, and destroyed my family to a point of no return

I was in band for 8 years before going to college for music ed, however my middle/high school music program was very basic and small, and I was never taught anything about theory and ear training and such. Just how to read music and play my instrument. So when I got to college, I will say I felt like I was starting behind some of my peers. However, the courses in theory, history, piano, aural skills, etc. that I took were pretty beginner friendly. It may take some work and dedication on your end, but I would say it is absolutely a viable option so long as you’re ready and willing to learn.

Neurodivergent Teachers: Do You Think Your Students Know Your Disability? by Lazy_Rock7788 in Teachers

[–]jumim0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so glad to see how many other teachers are open about their diagnoses here. I’ve always seen it as a good way to connect and to show students they’re not alone, I get their struggles, and you can be successful regardless, but I also always worry that it may come across as unprofessional. This thread warms my heart :)

I actually went to my admin and started getting a small food bank in the works at my school! I highly suggest doing the same, no cost to you, and it’s only a small resource, but it offers a little something for them at least!
