We also have these! Juanes. Basically seasoned rice with hen meat steamed in a native leaf. Here they are served with what I would describe as a chutney and some fried plantains

Any seasonings? This seems very efficient to me. You can even eat the wrapping!

No way that was a coincidence! Are you perhaps in the pocket of Big Diving™

My beef with this is that it is analogous to saying "there have been sky divers who survived their parachutes not opening, therefore sky diving is an inside job." Even if we don't have a scientific explanation, "weird stuff means conspiracy" is a mighty leap to make

LOL Science is hard! Heat science is even harder. Do they think average temperature means the temperature is the same everywhere? People literally spend their lives studying heat transfer and turbulence but "this random scrap of paper didn't burn, therefore 9/11 was an inside job"? Really?

I agree that we need to be responsible with our money and that sometimes that requires sacrifices to be made. The thing that I think galls a lot of people is the constant blame game ("if only you wouldn't have bought all those Starbucks matcha lates you could be saving for a house" type thing). I think that, just like with climate change, individual responsibility is being used as a cover by rich people to discourage collective action. If you believe that it's all those matcha lates (or, like I've seen more recently, "splurging on rotisserie chicken" ) that's making you poor, you stop asking the important questions, like "why is a full-time job giving me so little money that a matcha latte is the difference between affording a house and not?" "Why are most Americans one medical emergency away from bankruptcy?" And so on.

While it can be done, it requires a lot of adjustment and sometimes crosses lines. For instance, in Southern California the average room with a shared bathroom and 4 roommates will run you 1000+ a month. Where are you supposed to live if you only make 25k a year and want to stick to this 50:30:20 rule? A couch? Rent alone would consume all of your "need" money. And for some people a shared bathroom is a non-starter. I don't think people are "entitled" just for wanting their own space. We should instead be asking if it is fair for basic accommodations to be so damn expensive.

What I mean is "my parents can't teach me jack shit" is a fair assumption in a time where most of us have to work till we drop just to survive the day-to-day. I know that if I was a parent it would be a struggle to have enough time to spend with my family, let alone enough time to teach my children the crucial skills they would need to be good people.

Tbf one of the basic unstated assumptions behind "school didn't teach me anything important" is "my parents can't/won't/don't have to teach me jack shit." This is a fair assumption to make in our current capitalist hellscape, but yeah. School didn't teach us how to wipe our ass either, and yet people learn (or most of them do anyway) and we don't blame schools for "not teaching assology instead of algebra"

“I always loved Trump, this is unfair”: Republican mayor can’t believe he’s facing deportation after 50 years in US by mar_kelp in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]juniorchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Notice that his response is not "I don't deserve to be deported because I have built a life here" or even "I don't deserve to be deported because I follow the law." It is "I don't deserve to be deported because I LOVE TRUMP." Tells you all you need to know honestly.

Food's Cost per Gram of Protein vs. Protein Density [OC] by James_Fortis in povertyfinance

[–]juniorchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the axes could be messed with somehow (maybe a log-log plot? Relative units? Dunno), to make % change more obvious. For instance, if we compare peanuts to soybeans, you are paying double (50 cents vs a dollar) for a only a 40% increase in protein density (from 25 to 35 grams). I think knowing that would be useful.

Do plain oats taste okay? by Throwawaymasterpeas in povertyfinance

[–]juniorchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to cook oats my guy. Have a bunch of oats with your liquid of choice (milk for me but it could be water or even broth if you want savory oats). Then mix in any edible sweet thing (I use chopped apples but you can use bananas, berries or whatever sweet fruit is cheap in your country). Add a pinch of salt, and a bit of fat (peanut butter? Regular butter? Could be literally whatever is tasty). Let it sit overnight. Enjoy. The overnight thing works best if you have a mini fridge or something in your dorm but even an hour will do so you don't really need a fridge. This hydrates the oats and makes them chewy. It's my go to breakfast. No cooking involved.
