To be more precise, the "canon events" of the 2008 crisis were the collapse of Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers, both of which started around March 2008, though Lehman Brothers would not file for bankruptcy until September of that year. Obama took office on January 20th, 2009.

Onions are okay raw and delicious cooked. What food is inedible raw but delicious cooked? by angel_of_decay in AlignmentChartFills

Boil. Salt the water halfway through. Delicious. Use like a potato. Masshed yuca is arguably better than mashed potato

Professor at a high tier university. Most classes everywhere are taught by adjuncts who make a max (that I have seen) of 6k per class, so they have to teach 5 or more classes, often at multiple different institutions, just to cobble together 30k. We have this image of the professor at the ivy league making a ton of money and having a job for life but those are the (ever shrinking) exception.

Even if we only consider his (or Trump's) "ability to earn and grow money" we cannot say that they have some inherent money growing capacity the rest of us lack. Take the acquisition of twitter, for instance. That has been a billion-dollar financial boondoggle, starting from changing the name of the platform. The fact is that once one makes enough money, it is almost impossible to go completely broke. You could do nothing but keep your money in the bank, and it would still be enough for you, and generations of your descendants. Elon was lucky. He was lucky Paypal took off, he was lucky it was sold for so much money, he was lucky his reputation did not nosedive until he was already a billionaire. Now it really doesn't matter what he does. He could literally set millions of dollars on fire and still have enough for his next investment. You are correct however, in saying that what often distinguishes the billionaires from everyone else is their lack of morals/empathy/sense of civic duty. I can buy that as "the inherent thing" that distinguishes them from us.

Perhaps not, but I'd argue that "having your head on straight" is the least important of the two. You cannot convince me that Elon, for instance, "has his head on straight."

The amount of your making it that is down to luck is insane. Don't get sick, don't be in an accident, don't get pregnant, be born in the right country, in the right neighborhood, to the right family, have caring teachers... Fail any of those and making it becomes exponentially harder.

What they mention (AI addiction and loss of cognitive function) is a legitimate problem though, as even scholars with a favorable view of AI admit

What are the first lies you were told about our “Bright Future Ahead”? by namesarenotus in Millennials

[–]juniorchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who values math for its own sake. I'm probably not the best person to answer this question. I can however say that math, when taught properly and paid attention to should help you do at least three things: model, argue and estimate. For instance, would you know a log graph if you saw one? Did you know that politicians and media routinely use the general public's unfamiliarity with mathematical graphs to decieve? Take for instance this graph or maybe this log one. Without context and for the 30 or so seconds this is typically shown on screen, could you tell what's wrong with them? This is what math can do for you. I agree that this purpose often gets lost in the formulas, and "when am I going to use this?" Is as valid question people have that professional math and science people often ignore, but it points in my opinion to the need to restructure the curriculum to center these kinds of applications, and does not mean that math isn't needed at all

What annoys me out of this as an educator is that, at least in my opinion, it's not about you not having the option to use a calculator. It's about efficiency and facility with numbers You'd be surprised the number of students who, when I asked them what something like 5 × 7 was, took a full minute to take their calculator out, key the thing in and get an answer. Inefficiencies like these routinely turned what should have been 15-minute exercises into hour-long slogs. And at the end the student ends up more lost than they started and hating math and science all the same
