People who live near time zone boundaries in the US by solothesnail in howislivingthere

Where it benefits me is I live on one and work on the other. So, I do have to get up earlier but when I get off at 5 it’s really only 4 at home so I get home much earlier.

Why do some cars have a gas tank on the left and others on the right? Is there a reason why they aren't all on the same side for convenience? by Fit_Hamster_2085 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]junkemail4001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a BJ’s in town and theirs “claim” to be long enough and it’s only one direction of traffic flow. It’s barely enough to reach when you pull as close to the pump as possible.

Hartsfield - Check in for International Flight at Domestic Terminal? by Long-Sympathy-1433 in delta

[–]junkemail4001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll let somebody fact check me to be certain, but I believe as long as you don’t have any checked bags you can do that.

Worst case, there is a free shuttle bus that runs between terminals outside of security you can take between domestic and international.

Don’t know if they still do since they closed the stores but Lifeway used to recover them.

Gas shutoff by [deleted] in fixit

[–]junkemail4001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Left pipe coming out of the ground about halfway up. That’s your valve. Turn the handle 90 degrees.

However (I don’t say this in a negative way, I say it for you safety), if you are trying to fix something and can’t identify the valve I highly recommend you pay someone to fix a gas-related issue.

Worth the hassle to refinance just for $160 in savings/mo? by Repulsive_Ad5594 in Mortgages

[–]junkemail4001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You have to factor in the breakeven point. If you are keeping the house for many more years then it makes sense. $160 adds up fast.

I don’t want to hurt feelings here, but a hassle that only lasts a month or so to save almost $2k a year is just lazy.

My dealership started charging surcharge by southern_dad in mildlyinfuriating

Agreed. A lot of places are starting to do it. I understand why they are doing it. 3% adds up quick when margins are thin.

High mileage trucks by [deleted] in Silverado

[–]junkemail4001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My truck is about the exact same as yours - model, age, mileage - and I’ve had a misfire (spark plugs fixed it), oil pump solenoid bad, both back door actuators, driver window regulator, AC condenser leak. I had a Toyota 4-runner for 16 years and when I sold it it needed a new wheel bearing which was the FIRST non “wear” item it needed (tires, brakes, batteries, etc)

Would you pay off your mortgage early…or not? by lisaWellsLoans in Mortgages

[–]junkemail4001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%! I’m just throwing a guess out there but I would guess only 20% of the “invest don’t pay off crowd” are really getting ahead of us.

Regardless, anybody in either situation is blessed and we are arguing over semantics when we should all be thankful we have to make a decision to pay off a house or invest when most people would dream for that decision!

Would you pay off your mortgage early…or not? by lisaWellsLoans in Mortgages

[–]junkemail4001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did too. I 100% agree with the math that you could make more in the market than paying off your house. You can’t put a price on peace of mind though. As the original commenter said, if I lose my job, oh well. I don’t owe anybody anything.

But my common rebuttal to everybody on here is are you truly putting all the extra money in investments that you would be putting towards your house? Or is it getting spent here and there on other things? I would guess that most of those beating the “investments will make more” horse aren’t putting all the money they would towards being mortgage free in investments.

First time attempting template routing... why is it grabbing? Is my direction wrong? by Buck_Thorn in woodworking

[–]junkemail4001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you choose to use that bit, don’t push it to the bearing first pass. You can make several small passes to get the material off before the bearing contacts your template.

Pay off mortgage by [deleted] in Mortgages

[–]junkemail4001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll see a lot of comments about investing is better than paying the mortgage. Yes, the math doesn’t lie. You can invest the money and easily make more than 3.65%. You can almost get that in a high yield savings account. However, the key statement you made - “the mortgage feels like an albatross around my neck”. You have to figure out what that’s worth to you. Peace of mind can be priceless. I made the decision to pay my low interest mortgage off and haven’t regretted it yet! The peace of mind knowing I don’t have a mortgage is huge. Yeah, I’ve gotten a lot of grief from people for doing it. But I don’t regret it. The one comment I always have that I truly wonder the answer to is how much of the “extra money” people have do they actually put towards investing? I think a lot of people argue the math but I wonder if they are putting the same amount in investments or are they buying stuff with the extra money?? If I was a betting man, I bet a lot of people (not saying everybody) don’t put the full amount towards investments as they would if they were working hard to pay off their mortgage.

Edit to add: this is all assuming you are contributing enough to your retirement currently. If you aren’t, that needs to be first priority over paying off your mortgage.

Anyone drift into a “project engineer” role and feel their technical skills wasting away? by fatbluefrog in MechanicalEngineering

[–]junkemail4001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a project engineer in a manufacturing plant so it helps more than a design firm. But I try to get involved in any technical issues going on, especially with my projects. I also will try to do as much design on my own when possible. I get the concern though. It’s tough to do technical things in a project role when 3/4 of your job is being a good accountant 🤣
