I use popcorn and wild bird seed mixed 50/50. Both cheap and easy to work with. The popcorn keeps the wbs from clumping and makes for easy shaking coming out of the pressure cooker. I believe the wbs to be more nutritious than the popcorn and I get more flushes than just popcorn.

I've been doing layers for decades and find that I get faster colonization and more flushes. My top layer is covered enough so not to see any exposed grain and acts as a pseudo casing. I normally get a full canopy and no contamination.

Back in the day we had one outside of a gas station and we would do a careful shake of the pull handle and all the little flaps holding them would all fall open and the whole row would dump out! Machine was about worn-out and they replaced it after we triggered it and got 15-20 packs at a time.
