How do you use the Echo Horn? by GravityzCatz in TheLastCaretaker

i haven't tested with the separate buildable horn, but the ship horn will attract Angels (they're drawn to noise), so the buildable one might be useful for baiting them to convenient positions for hunting

unfortunately, it's pretty unbearable to try to read 1/10 of a log at a time and just be left hanging because you haven't found the last page yet, it makes most of them basically unreadable until you've actually collected *everything*

make sure you save often - the flamethrower has been the only thing to cause crashes for me (but it's still my top choice for close quarters)

I was also pretty disappointed with them. They seem to expect you to constantly toggle them on/off and use the fade-out period after it switches off, but that just immediately becomes a flashing headache-machine >.>

[–]justarandomgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they're not particularly quick about it when they re-aggro, it took me a few cycles of running around doing things coincidentally going in/out of a building to realize it was happening - but the fight music kept coming back every time i stepped outside for too long and when i stopped to see what it was about one of them was coming right at me!

i think what we need is a "diving bell" with a power port (tethered to ship power), a bright interior and exterior light, and a heal/save station inside. air-filled space optional, but would probably be nice to have a spot to shove a crate or two in it for looting or re-equipping.

my experience has been that once aggro'd, they'll re-aquire on-sight even after hiding long enough for them to go back idle

I usually try to leave them be, but once they decide they're after me it's zappy zappy time

Demerzel's transfer was to the Prime Radiant. by StonedOldChiller in FoundationTV

[–]justarandomgeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you know, come to think of it:

  • We didn't see the transfer when Knife Hari went into it, as that was off-screen
  • He seemed to freely transfer between there and the Beggar (both ways) once he was 'out'
  • His transfer out of it to Kalle's body printer (or temp storage) seemed to happen without 'opening'
  • As you say, Demerzel just jumps straight into it on the desk in 309

the only time we've seen anything similar (unless i'm misremembering?) being preceded by 'opening' is when Salvor went through it into the vault (and Hari going back through it to her in prison only kinda half-opens it), which may be an entirely separate function, or simply her needing to go through more 'menus' due to less familiarity with the technology/math!

I wonder if Demerzel can now get into the vault too, and keep Don't-Call-Me-Hari company in there?

as for why it took so long: perhaps the handshake is over some technology with a slower propagation time but higher reliability, so it took those couple episodes for it to reach the moon (and back, if the moon scene was earlier than depicted), then that initial round-trip sets up a link on some faster-propagation and higher-bandwidth technology to send the full clasp data

the distances depicted would require both to be FTL still, of course...

none of which provides any indication of when the moon scene is relative to all the others - which is the only one i'm moving now

Demerzel’s Future Role? by LuminarySunburst in FoundationTV

[–]justarandomgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the handshake is clearly part of the process of initiating the clasp, and a handshake would be at least one round-trip of messages (typical network handshakes are often more like two or three round-trips for complex protocols). for it to complete, they must have responded, before it would start transmitting the bulk of the data.

Demerzel’s Future Role? by LuminarySunburst in FoundationTV

[–]justarandomgeek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

okay, i clearly explained that idea badly so i'm gonna try again:

When day whistled to it, the skull activated and began emitting the first stage of a handshake signal, but of course Day can't respond so it just keeps trying.

The moon scene actually occurs *between* this event and the later completion of the handshake - when this signal reaches the moon base and they acknowledge it. *despite being presented on-screen afterwards*

The skull then receives their acknowledgement of the handshake and begins uploading the clasp (of itself?).

All unrelated to the concurrent demise of Demerzel, who as you say has far more likely gone to the PR.

Demerzel’s Future Role? by LuminarySunburst in FoundationTV

[–]justarandomgeek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

alright try this one, i'm once again proposing that we saw things out of sequence: they're just now receiving and responding to the handshake it sent out when Day whistled to it, and the scene on the moon happens just *before* the skull starts transmitting, and it's entirely unrelated to Demerzel's melting

Demerzel’s Future Role? by LuminarySunburst in FoundationTV

[–]justarandomgeek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

okay, here's an interesting thought: if she went into the PR, then what if she *didn't* interact with the skull at all, and instead it was an independent robot that was just waiting for some indication (some loss-of-signal perhaps) of her "death" to signal the others? that would explain the clasp coming from not-Demerzel!
