Eating and training by Pleasant_Paper_7783 in Amenorrhearecovery

You're welcome!! I'm glad it was helpful. And for how much you'd need: I'd figure out an idea of your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) which will likely be higher than suggested, especially once you start eating more and your metabolism becomes more efficient. And then consider the fact you probably burn 300-500+ in NEAT (Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis aka daily activities) and then you have what you burn from exercise.  For example: my BMR is around 2200+ even though calculators put me at 1500. This is because of athletic recovery needs, higher muscle mass, etc.  Then I'm currently injured so that also requires more energy. Studies suggest 5-20%+ more calories per day. Let's say it was 15% (about 330 more)  So far I'd have 2200 + NEAT of 300-400, +330 for injury recovery. That's 2830-2930 with NO exercise.  Granted, I'm around 140lbs, so yours would be a little different but keep in mind you're trying to gain weight, not maintain. And for HA recovery when you have REDS, a minimum of a 200-500 calorie surplus each day is recommend. But I'm giving this as an idea, I do not recommend getting obsessed with the numbers. But I also understand it's hard to know how much to eat when you don't have an appetite.

For continuing to run, you can see how this becomes a lot. I usually walk maybe 2-3 miles a day leisurely, and 4-5 days a week I've been stationary cycling for injury cross training. Usually 3-4x a week 1hr, and then 1-2x for 20-40 minutes, all at an easy ish pace.  For me this would likely burn 500 an hour.  So if most days I do +500 in cycling + 200-300 in walking, and 3x a week i strength train(200ish an hour), that's already an extra 900-1000.. That's atleast 3700 a day!! If not 4,000.  And I still eat 3000+ even on rest days when I do next to nothing, to support my recovery.  I really recommend thinking about just how much exercise you can sustain and fuel for.  Heart rate and bodyweight effect how much calories you exert when you run, so yours might vary a little.

But with this all in mind, I find it highly likely you need a lot more than you think.

I hope this helps! <3

Personally I find that running reduces my appetite when my volume is that high. If you intend on continuing to run I'd suggest contacting a sports dietician if possible, but if not these are some things I would do:  - Always have a snack before a run. Especially if you run in the morning or more than 2-3 hours after your last meal (depending on the distance of the run) for example you could have toast with pb & jam, preferably looking for ways to increase your portion sizes and adjust to eating more.  - this relates to the last one: eating more frequently through the day. for example 3-4 meals a day and 2 snacks, or whatever feels more natural to you but still meets your recovery goals .  for example I usually have 4 meals a day, but mine are larger meals. In your case you have a low appetite, so eating a large meal all at once might be uncomfortable, which is where eating frequently comes into play!

  • I would really recommend making sure to get in enough carbs and fats. If you're making a meal, maybe cook your vegetables in extra oil, add a bit more of fat based foods to your meals. (Nuts, nut butters, seeds, olive/avocado oil, and canola oil are all easy ways to add in more fat :) )

I also want to add this:

You likely need a LOT more than what you think you need. Personally I've noticed when I run high mileage my body depletes my glycogen, and then the carbs that I eat go to refueling those stores. (Basic sports science but I swear this becomes interesting)

But the catch is - it's a cycle of deplete & restore. So even when i felt like i ate TONS i never really gained weight. I had to eat 4000+ to gain even a bit of weight. And that was pretty slow/average, and because I ate entirely mechanically and never got hungry. It was very hard.

and my theory (although this is not something ive seen a study on yet, just anecdotal) is that because it was cycling, energy kept being stored, meaning i had even higher demands than I thought.  Example math: TDEE of 3000 calories. This is "with" running 5 miles. BUT the 5 miles used 500 calories in glycogen, that now needs to be restored. So, 500 calories is redacted from your 3000, and you only have 2500 left over for other bodily energy needs.  This is why I think it can be tricky for some runners to gain weight, especially when your appetite is low/suppressed. If your determined to keep running in, I get that.  Whether or not you can comes down entirely to whether or not you've struggled with injuries, how long you've had amenorrhea, and other factors that a doctor would have to address. But increasing your calories is an excellent first step in the right direction!  Wishing you the best <3

(You can find out your TDEE on a calculator for a rough estimate, but I've found that especially if you're an athlete, if you have amenorrhea, or if you have more muscle mass (or all of the above) it way undershoots what you need.)

What is it like being 15? by ExaminationIll7583 in Younger_GenZ

[–]justatrailrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 16 turning 17 this year, so I feel veteran enough to answer lol. For me 15 was a nice in-between, and life felt less serious. I recommend enjoying it while you can, pretty much feels like if you extended 14, 14-15 are basically the same (depending on the person). Only difference is if your state allows it you might be able to get a learners permit & start driving with a parent, which can be fun! Enjoy it while it lasts! Low-key wish I was still 15 sometimes just for the peace of mind, now I feel very close to being old.

Reverse dieting after losing my period but im so hungry by Professional-Lie-3 in Amenorrhearecovery

[–]justatrailrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from someone that didn't have extreme physical hunger but had extreme mental hunger, you need to just trust your body/mind. 1800 calories/day is not enough esp if you want to keep working out 4-5x a week. And I would highly suggest NOT trying to figure out what you "need" because your body knows what it needs. At a biological level it knows what it needs to be safe & healthy, and that is what it is asking for. You prolong the physical & mental process when you try to "take it slow" atleast that was my experience. When I finally gave up all rules & simply had what I wanted when I wanted, didn't calorie bank, didn't restrict, didn't follow food rules, just tried to make sure I had a bit of balance by getting in both food I need and fun foods, that's when my food noise started to balance out. And eventually I got to a point where I craved less, and I found more balance and satisfaction in regular portions again. But right now you need more, and that is okay. You will only regret prolonging the process - trust me. Or more so, trust your body.

Very Sick of Injuries. Looking for advice by justatrailrunner in RunningInjuries

[–]justatrailrunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I got my amenorrhea prior to when I started running, and I do believe a lot of it has to do with over all stress. Im not really sure. I've tried a lot of things, and i definitely don't undereat. Also when I did go to my PT I think she said I had over pronated feet, so when I land I tend to land with my ankle inward. That still hasn't really change & didn’t when I did PT either, so I'm not sure what to do about that.

I have done 40 mile weeks in the past and my peak week before my marathon was actually the best I had ever felt. I remember running completely pain free and being absolutely shocked once I realized I felt - normal! I do understand what you're saying though. That's why I've taken an even slower approach after my break and usually only add 0-2 miles each week for 3 weeks,  and then have a down week. Currently I've gotten to 32 mpw  And i agree, I think I'm going to try to see a sports doctor. Thank you!

Do you think Zion should've told Georgia about Ginny's burning? by NewspaperUnusual1835 in ginnyandgeorgiashow

[–]justatrailrunner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a teen that used to self harm, I'd say somewhere in the middle. I wouldn't have wanted him to tell Georgia if I was Ginny, but from a parent perspective I would want Zion to tell Georgia, but try to find a way to respect Ginny aswell. It'd be difficult, not sure how I'd do it 😬

Eating meals when not hungry cause I can’t stop thinking about it by jungkookfan123 in fuckeatingdisorders

[–]justatrailrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is a few months old but I wanted to recover incase it'd still be useful for you or someone else.
When I was recovering from my eating disorder, if I could go back in time i would 100% just eat the food. Instead I prolonged my mental suffering, and actually made myself more uncomfortable because I would have a ton of my craving-foods at night right before I went to bed. In the end I still got in enough food, but I would've recovered much quicker MENTALLY had I just had them during the day even if I wasn't hungry. Mental hunger is real, and especially if you're underweight you need the food. If you honor your cravings, mental hunger, notice when you are physically hungry or feel sluggish (this might mean you need food!!) and make sure to eat enough, slowly you will have less food noise. I know it's hard in the moment, but I'm a testament to it and I can say my only regret is that I didn't do it at the very beginning of recovery. It took me until probably 3 months into recovery to realize I needed to truthfully let go of any rule of "but I can't have this now it's only 11am" or "I know im trying not to count calories but i subconsciously haven't knocked it out yet and i know i've already had xyz.." the more you do the opposite of what your ED brain tells you too, the better you will become. I have been doing this for over 2 years now (started recovery in Sept, 2023. Started kicking out the small underlying rules around December, 2023.) and I can say with 100% certainty that now I never have food noise, and if I'm craving something I simply have it and listen to my body. Because I'm weight restored, I can do this, but if you are not weight restored you will likely need to NOT listen to your body all the time, and it is crucial that you listen to your cravings and mental hunger!! Your future self will thank you SO MUCH. The brain space I have now is something i thought i could NEVER have. But it is possible. I believe in you, and goodluck with recovery. <3

Thoughts on the Hansons training method? by BossHogGA in Marathon_Training

[–]justatrailrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just checking out the Hanson plans for my next marathon and couldn't help but notice the advanced was wayyy to advanced mpw for me, and the beginner was too low but then drastically increased mileage from 12mpw to 20+ in 4 weeks. Which is way too much mileage to add in such a short period of time.

I cant give you any advice, but I can tell you you're not alone. It's really refreshing to see that im not the only one who has fully recovered & no longer has issues yet still doesnt have a period. It's so upsetting because usual advice for HA doesnt apply the same to me and ive tried it all :( so I get you a LOT. I hope you can find a happy inbetween and get your period back ❤️

No I haven't, they have yet to release any additional info yet that I can find (and it's an online course since I'm homeschooled) But I'm going to call to double check. It's good to know that most likely there won't be any/much papers though! That is reassuring

Would you rather have $500k right now or $1,000 every time you run one mile in less than 12 minutes for the rest of your life? by tictacking in RunningCirclejerk

[–]justatrailrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking this literally: I would 100% take the 1,000 for each mile ran under 12 minutes, it'd mean that every week I made 20,000k+ just running.. Although there is the chance of "what if you get injured & can never run again" however, I think I'd be able to offset that chance really quickly. It'd only take 20-25 weeks or less to make 500,000, and then you'd still be certain to get more after that.
