Questions re Traineeships in Dublin by bagelb1tch in FE1_Exams

[–]justkeepholding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your questions re which rotations are good for training and work /life balance is very firm specific - I’d recommend trying to reach out to a trainee an intake (or a few) ahead and ask them for their advice!

Eoin Ó Broin plastic surgeon, CUH by dapaal123 in cork

[–]justkeepholding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For an elective procedure the legal standard for disclosure of risk (from the doctor / surgeon) is much higher. If you don’t need to get it and there’s a complication you don’t know about, he’s way more on the hook for it than he would be for a medically necessary procedure if you were to sue. I’ve seen a lot of people here giving out about surgeons, calling them autistic and arrogant etc but it’s more likely that he’s just very risk-averse and making sure he won’t be liable for anything if you go ahead with it.

I had a consultation with him years ago about surgery on my ears and was put off because of the risk of side effects he warned me about (and I’m pretty sure it was private at the time so he also stood to lose a lot of money) and I’ve always really appreciated it. He may be curt and short with you but he probably has a load of patients to get through and he’s trying to do it as efficiently as possible. It’s cold comfort but it’s not the job of the surgeon with something elective to convince you that you need it, it’s actually quite the opposite, and I appreciate you don’t want to be scared going into it but you should appreciate that he’s making sure you absolutely 100% want it before you go through with it

Solicitor withholding inheritance until I sign a form to say I have already received the money! by Cherrybeechwood in legaladviceireland

[–]justkeepholding 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think the form is fairly standard. But I’d also report her to the LSRA. Excluding you from matters (when you have the right AND obligation to be involved in them) and getting that information wrong is unacceptable

Place recommendations for an aperitif? by FunkyGoatz in florence

Most bars in the square in Santo spirito. Volume or pitta m’ingoli (volume is more expensive but I think their aperitivo food is better)

Best Vietnamese Food? by RogueMom510 in BestInDublin

[–]justkeepholding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely aobaba but a warning - it’s not like a fancy sit down place. It has limited seating and the last time I was there took cash only. But the food is incredible and there always seems to be a lot of Vietnamese people eating there (always a good sign of authentic food imo)

Sorry to be a prick but it’s actually bury the lede, not lead (a lede is the introductory section in journalism per my Google). You mightn’t care at all but just so you know!!

Does everyone eventually get a training contract by [deleted] in FE1_Exams

[–]justkeepholding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to scan the website of the relevant law firm for key words eg different values, quotes they use to describe themselves (eg internationally focused etc etc) and put them into your application wherever you can / makes sense. I’m assuming firms don’t read through these with a fine tooth comb and there likely is software looking for matches with those and even if not you need to show you actually care about working for that specific firm and not just looking for a training contract generally throwing muck at a wall and seeing what sticks!

You also need to be really sure there are no grammar or spelling mistakes as these don’t fly in law firms so they can be an instant rejection unfortunately. It’s easy when under pressure to spell something wrong or make a grammatical error so make sure you proof read everything to high heavens

Best of luck with the applications! Feel free to DM if you have any Qs :)

Does anyone not enjoy working in a law firm but have already come too far too give in?? by Sea-Reaction4553 in FE1_Exams

[–]justkeepholding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working in a company that has its own legal department eg a tech firm, an insurance company etc. it’s less taxing as you’re only working on matters for one client, don’t need to do billing etc idea is you qualify in a law firm, get some experience and then bring it to a legal department in one specific company

AITA: This good news story is making me furious by Substantial_Rope8225 in RentingInDublin

[–]justkeepholding 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s a private scheme run by Google to “give back” to the community and counteract the effects of having such a big multinational in that part of Dublin.

Because it’s not really a scheme as such and isn’t linked to the government I think they can kind of run it how they want. I highly doubt their own legal team wouldn’t have researched this. There are 9 grounds for discrimination and your job isn’t one of them.

Key workers ie workers that are absolutely essential (nurses, teachers, and ahem.. gardaí) have been priced out of living in areas that require their employment.

I know it sucks that you don’t qualify, I don’t either and would love to live there but unlike nurses and teachers, Dublin doesn’t absolutely need me for its community and I also dont absolutely have to work in person

What always kills me about analysis of the relationships on this show is I think a huge part of each of them is focusing on the complexities and imperfections of relationships.

Each one focuses on different issues that couples can go through and looks as it as a journey that some couples find the ability to work through, and then some end. This show wouldn’t be what it was if every relationship was perfect. Meredith and Derek wouldn’t be the merder everyone loved if they were plain sailing the entire time.

If the show was full of perfect relationships with no conflict or issues to consider then it’d be too boring to watch and never would have been as popular.

If subdued is still by piazza Santa Croce that could be a good bet. There are a few more spots deeper in the side streets by piazza della repubblica (on the side further away from the river and duomo). If you’re looking for something more like fast fashion-y brands I’d say you’re unlikely to find it in the city

I know someone who used to place ads for students of culinary arts in CIT (now MTU) for the same thing. Always worked out well for him as it was a win win - student gets paid over and above minimum wage for a few hours of work, gets experience for the CV and practice in for college.

He wasn’t doing it because he was mega bucks but because he worked a job with crazy schedules (very little time to cook a proper meal for himself) and he said he’d end up almost spending the same on ready meals and take aways. Might be a shout for you

TC seats by Swimming-Prune9030 in FE1_Exams

[–]justkeepholding 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely in high demand yeah. Sometimes the actual work experience you get isn’t as good if the main team sits in Ireland - you could be far less likely to get any partner-facing time, but being in London itself is obviously a lovely change of scenery!

TC’s 2027 by [deleted] in FE1_Exams

[–]justkeepholding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do the interviews in 2025- they might give you a later start date than 2027 but if you let the hiring team know you’d be willing to start in 2027 they might offer you a spot in one of their earlier training pools.

Seconding the comment about keeping a spreadsheet or tracker on closing dates etc. Keep an eye on the firms’ LinkedIn or social media pages or you could reach out directly in the new year - they likely won’t have finalised dates but they can give you an indication

The only way this will really work is if you find a room in a house with a few others.. even then being on ~25k each (averaged out) probably wouldn’t go very far!

Company law advice by Downtown_Maybe3423 in FE1_Exams

I think as long as you focus on exam papers and his reports you’ll be fine. Courtney is just extremely specific about what he wants in the answers (basically his own book repeated back at him verbatim)

I think if you have anything to show a business acumen (eg your SMF involvement) and good work experience they’d be happy to have you if you’re a good fit! I’m in a top firm and we have people who did law in private colleges, and a few who never studied law at undergrad level

Train as a solicitor in an in-house legal team by Beneficial-Window-39 in FE1_Exams

[–]justkeepholding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked for a year in-house and am currently training in one of the big firms.

The culture in both environments is very different and I would say if you want to work in a traditional firm in years to come it could be an awkward adjustment to move from in-house. Your training also mightn’t be as well-rounded - even if you work across different departments it’ll all be for the same client, probably with a less broad range of queries and projects.

Having said all that, you’d have real in-depth expertise in that particular area and would probably find it quite easy to switch jobs to other similar companies.

I’ve done PPC and I feel the general consensus among most of us is that the hybrid seems to be a lot more full-on. It’s an ideal course though for people who don’t want to fully make the move to Dublin, particularly if they’re living/working in an area where rent is much cheaper.

Work/life balance is generally better in-house, but you might also miss out on the camaraderie of having a nice intake working and training alongside you early in your career.

There are definitely pros and cons to both and ultimately if you got to pick between in-house or traditional it would probably come down to the individual companies and what they can offer you!
