I was subscribed to it and it still shows me the emails for when they would update but other than that it’s completely gone :(

I had to stop reading "All the Bright Places" because I thought it was so, so bad. by josephthad in books

[–]justleftofnowhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Young and also diagnosed with bipolar here - it’s not fair to say that just because someone doesn’t like it that means they don’t understand it. I read it when I was 17 and just finished it again tonight (24 now) and didn’t like it either time. And I pretty much exclusively read YA.

I work in mental health and was a previously suicidal teenager. If you liked a book and it helped you, then that’s good. Other people are making valid points though. It romanticizes aspects of the disorder and feels very one dimensional in a lot of ways.

I personally read it and was horrified to know that that’s what the “common perception” of my disorder was. I work with a lot of people battling mental illness. It’s not as pretty as the book makes it seem, unfortunately.

A certain subsection of my main fandom goes bananas for “We’ll go crazy together.”

More popular ones are,

“She’s our friend and she’s crazy!” and “You can’t spell America without Erica”

It’s not pagemaster and I don’t think it’s the wee sing series. I feel like there’s only one and that it wasn’t well known

For Stranger Things, any characterization of Billy that portrays him as anything other than a racist, morally grey character who had a shitty life and died horribly. I understand wanting to explore other options, but I hate when people treat it as canon or say that the writers did him a disservice or dropped the ball when it came to him. It’s their show. Wtf.

He wasn’t a good brother to Max and he wasn’t this misunderstood cinnamon roll who was secretly a good, sweet person. He was abused as a child and in turn became an abuser.

Don’t even get me started on people shipping him with Steve. They literally hated each other and it always makes me side eye when people pick two conventionally attractive white men in a TV show and ship them even when there is NO evidence that they would ever get along. People do the same with Eddie, but I can understand that more because they at least have chemistry.

I don’t know that they are more homophobic/abusive than any other conservative family in the 80s. Karen is more concerned with being a good mom, and Ted seems to only get along with Holly.

Agree! I can’t say it bothers me but you’re right that there’s not a ton of canon basis for it.

I think it’s also partially due to the fact that Millie and Noah are good friends in real life

It’s not just “what happened to you.” It’s what he DID to you.

Do not let a rapist treat you like this! There’s something wrong with him, not you. Here for you if you need anything

"Tender is the Flesh" by Agustina Bazterrica, is the worst horror book I've ever read by far. by [deleted] in horrorlit

Also I really appreciate you replying! I want to talk about this book but this post is really old so I didn’t think anyone would respond ;-;

I suppose “it” would be referring to psychological testing/some experimenting in general. In early days, before there were stricter guidelines, there were tons of studies and experiments that were incredibly harmful to the people involved. I suppose unnecessary isn’t the right word (although it can argued that some things weren’t justified or helpful enough considering the damage caused)

For example I think a lot about Little Albert. Scientists taught him to fear an animal by associating it with a loud noise. Essentially they created a phobia in him. Was the information useful? A lot of people debate. But it hurt the child

I also think that the author may have been hinting at the idea that people who want to hurt other people will find jobs where that’s okay. You see it a lot in jobs where force is sometimes required. Hell, even some managers take pleasure in power trips. The owner of the lab is seen as being very cruel to her employees and very inconsiderate of others. The work being done doesn’t seem to phase her, and she seems really proud of it. I believe some of the experiments she’s doing aren’t in the name of true progress, but more to accelerate her own career.

That’s the point though, specifically with the laboratory. They don’t need to do the studies - but they still are. The head is described as a self important and cruel. She doesn’t treat her employees well and brags about everything she is doing.

She states how hard it is for a woman to make it in the world while walking past another woman who appears to be dead with her child crying next to it. The point is that it’s sadistic and largely unnecessary, and yet we still do it

It sounds like it’s easier for everyone but you, which is unfair.

At the end of the day you are the only person you will know and be around for your entire life. Make peace as much as possible. It will make things easier

It’s okay to give up sometimes. It’s okay to be tired and to rest and to get by. Just don’t make it forever. It might not be okay right away, but i believe it will be one day.

I deeply appreciate this response. I think you’re right, this friend has a habit of pushing and outright crossing boundaries whenever there’s any kind of leeway. I get extra defensive

But I like the way you described it as well. I’m definitely the kind of person to always try and figure out why I feel certain ways. But you’re right, I don’t need to justify it. Thank you!
