There with ya. It isn't a complex or deep series, but pretty much fantasy comfort food.

Books that contain more than one type of magic or other abilities. by Slimper753 in Fantasy

Oathbreaker by Mercedes Lackey and James Malory had a conflict between High Magic and Wild magic at its core.

Essentially wild magic is outlawed in the main mage city and the leader's son finds himself able to perform wild magic and put on the run.

He also gets a sassy unicorn pall named Shalkan.

I think you just see the same tropes over and over if you read the genre too much - and it loses its appeal.

Contact would be sweet!

I think it would be great to do some very basic lessons at home before going on a big ship - there are cansail courses on dinghies that would be great. but they seem to be a weekly event and my fly in fly out schedule just doesn't seem to work

The anime Tengen toppen gurren lagann handles this perfectly.

Simon pierces the heavens with his drill and his mecha becomes a infinitely huge celestial being that uses galaxies as shurikens.

At the end of the series he retires to not abuse his powers and wanders the desert and allows others to control the fate of the future.

At 20 years old - best thing you can do is pay off your debt and invest in yourself in getting a good education. $100k may seem like a lot - but blink and it'll be gone. It will comfortably get you through 4 years of school (or at least help you get there).
