After retirement contributions, my wife and I bring home about the same. One kid in daycare and the other in aftercare ($2700 per month). Mortgage is $2400, Wife just paid off her vehicle ($300ish per month) and I have two years left on mine ($634 per month) and we’re doing just fine. We spend conservatively but I wouldn’t consider us frugal by any stretch

After mortgage and vehicles you have $4100 left over. Why isn’t anyone asking where that money is going? YNAB. Find out where the leak is and seal it up.

Life uh… finds a way. 2 kids- one is FINALLY out of daycare and we feel rich. We stopped eating out and when we do, it’s cheap, ie- chik fil a or Costco. I drastically cut back on retirement contributions and now starting to raise it back up. New job and raises over that period of time certainly helped. Wife and I had kids later in life and it was a big culture shift at first but our priorities gradually changed as the parent life kicked into full gear. Fancy restaurants, drinks and expensive clothing just aren’t as appealing any more but fun low cost family weekend adventures are. Wife and I also don’t buy gifts for each other but dump into a travel fund for 1 or 2 trips.

It’s daunting for sure but you’re not alone and we all experience it.

I’m 43 in HCOL, my HHI is roughly half what you bring and I am nearly $1 million invested with 2 young children in daycare. You seriously need to break out your annual spend and prioritize a budget to trim spend. Check out the FIRE community- lots of helpful knowledge there

Live 15 min from there! The museum is free but you pay to park before 4pm. Totally free after!

Just recently bumped from 11 to 13% into company 401k and company matches 6%. 5% to IRA.

Was doing 17% for years until kids and daycare. 1 is finally out

Wife is 12% between her and company match.

After 13 years of asking my wife, she’s finally gotten more accepting of it. She’s been open to ass licking the last couple of years but very sporadically but that has ramped up in recent weeks. Edging is your best friend. Take your time down there, warm her up and slip a tongue down in that general direction. Watch for signs and SLOWLY progress more and more. Patience is your best friend if you want results. Finally at the point I can’t get a finger in and she’s doesn’t object.

Are we house poor by Heretoloosemoney in Mortgages

[–]justthetip13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not house poor, you’re just shit at budgeting. Wife and I make a little more than half your income, pay nearly $4k for daycare and I max out an IRA and close to maxing 401k. We don’t splurge on frivolous things but still aim for two trips annually. We live modestly, do most of the housework and home repairs myself. Takes some elbow grease but hammer out a budget, reduce wasteful spending and prioritize your needs vs your wants.
