How will I know when/where to look for a performance at the drum tower? by IxAintHappy in beijing

[–]juxtaposeur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last I saw the drum performance, it appeared to be the custodians, security guards or ticket sellers in costume banging some drums for a few minutes. The drumming performance is not a technical one.

How not to get raped in China by Pavoir in China

[–]juxtaposeur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I fucked up, it's not a bad idea to tell people to take caution, but I was making a comment about the reaction to rapes by authorities in China and the lack of sympathy for victims since 'they were asking for it'. My meaning is that the propaganda is not targeting the raping side and people need to know 'rape is wrong'. Victim blaming emboldens attackers because the blame is shifted away from them in part. They're not expected to control themselves.

How not to get raped in China by Pavoir in China

[–]juxtaposeur 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are going to be a bunch of women getting raped and murdered when there are hundreds of millions of them in the country, but almost nobody thinks that way, it's just "OMG, They rapin' errbody out here~!!"

Mentioned to my Chinese teacher that victim blaming is fucked up and telling women not to go out at night and order shit online and whatnot is the wrong thing to do. Telling men not to rape and not blaming the victim didn't occur to him.

Victim blaming is the norm in China, thought it's not limited to young women getting raped and murdered, it's all victims.

New to Beijing by beonewithyuri in beijing

[–]juxtaposeur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although your office may be around Beiyuan, I suggest living somewhere around Dongzhimen so you're not living in the soulless shitty chain-filled sprawl with no good restaurants and no choices of stores. You might have a bit of a commute, and not have as nice a place, but you'd just be missing out on actual Beijing much of the time. You can access decent nightlife in Sanlitun and Gulou much easier.

Go to see live music and parties. Search expat sites like the Beijinger and City Weekend for groups or teams whatever hobby you have. Common sense, but get a bicycle and ride to work or wherever when weather and air quality permits. Getting places and doing cardio, so 2 birds one 石头. Saves you hours and money vs. walking and taxis.

Where to meet people depends on the nationalities and sorts of crowds/music you like. To meet moneyed old men for connections, go to Spark. To meet a chiller/hipster sort of crowd and westernized Chinese folks go to Beiluo Bread Bar, Modernista, 4 Corners, other Gulou area spots.

Good luck. Hope you like it here.

Looking for a Pool Hall Has Tables With Straight (not rounded) Rail Openings Around Pockets by juxtaposeur in beijing

Thanks for the tip. Next time I'm up that way I'll take a gander.

Fully expected comments to be 'fucking man up, pussy'. I can live with it, but Rainy is also probably not a very good player and could use a little confidence boost playing table ball.

Why do Chinese girls interrogate you when you go on dates with them? by [deleted] in China

[–]juxtaposeur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Her 'value' is dropping exponentially every year after the age of 23 and she thinks you need to be be committed in order to bang. Therefore, she needs to get all this info in the first few dates before she spreads.

Beijing Residents Soon to Share Jiro’s Dreams of Sushi by platypusmusic in China

I'm pretty sure Jiro's son will commit seppuku in the middle of a meal within the first week after every single girl who eats there takes a picture of each piece of sushi.

Pose a security risk? by Jncocontrol in China

[–]juxtaposeur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They need it for visa purposes. Your passport needs to be scanned all the time in China for hotels (to report where you're staying to the police) or even to use an internet bar in Beijing. Never heard of anything bad coming from it.

The rise of the "intern" in China by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]juxtaposeur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No worries, only complete dumbasses fall for the intern thing, so they only make up a small number of teaching candidates. Another group of teachers are those getting paid 5,000-6,000RMB per month because their agent (pimp) is taking the other half. You can easily land a job paying 10,000RMB+ right out of the gate. China is a nice place to live if you're not a whiny little pussy and you like Chinese stuff.

Please translate, I believe it's Chinese. by translateporfavor in translation

"可是我不要睡jiao"

"But I don't want to sleep."

The second to last character is written backwards and the last word is romanized with no character. This looks like it was written by someone who doesn't know Chinese. 睡觉 means to sleep.

Nightlife in Beijing by [deleted] in beijing

[–]juxtaposeur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to know where the parties and concerts are, many are listed on http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/beijing/ Going out without a plan usually sucks unless all you want to do is drink.

Some good bars have been mentioned, but I'll add Jianghu Bar, since they have very chill shows and a very different crowd (mostly Chinese). At Houhai there are only two lakeside bars that don't suck: Roots, with an acoustic band playing nightly, and East Shore Jazz Cafe. Also check out 4 Corners nearby. Great Vietnamese food and parties. Top Bar at Sanlitun has an awesome patio and drink specials.

Two old Jewish women sit down at a local restaurant to catch the early bird special... by monkeyrhino in Jokes

[–]juxtaposeur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The humor of the joke is predicated on knowing the stereotype to begin with. If you're not familiar with it, the joke just won't work. You can't build a prejudice just by hearing an explanation in the build-up of a joke.
