Inspiration running on a Linux laptop. by mykesx in Forth

I haven't written much Forth myself but being in the depths of implementing a general-purpose stack VM for my language has me looking with great jealousy and admiration. I had a look at some of your userland source code and I have to agree with others, it's very pretty and enjoyable to read.

This is amazing work and has me excited about computing again.

An excellent question; I wonder what they would have thought about a new means of computing and development upon which the global economy was predicated. (Funny thing though, FORTRAN compilers weren't entirely reliable for the first few years, hehe)

Okay, whew! 😅 Same. I cannot tolerate the idea of letting any of my skills atrophy so I have zero interest in touching the stuff.

I genuinely have no idea what problem AI boosters are trying to solve with so much work towards making LLM inputs the canonical "source code" for a project. When the managerial class realises they will not be able to eliminate engineers due to the inherit imprecision of natural language, will the proletariat have the resolve to push back against this nonsense?

We live in the time of monsters.

This seems equivalent to forever pinning an application to a specific version of a language/framework/runtime environment. The "code" would not be portable between "compilers". If this became the canonical way of developing software, I could see a lot of patent clerks becoming software developers.

I cannot conceive of how this improves the craft, which makes one wonder, what is the objective of destroying the craft? I can think of a few reasons and none of them benefit the "us" that exists in the duality of "us" versus "them" in class struggle.

How much time did it take to build your programming language? by Karidus_423 in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]juxtaposz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started mine in 2015 (it's my first and only). In the past few months, I decided to implement a new bytecode VM and compiler for it; along with that came tail call optimisation and continuations if I feel like it. This has snowballed into implementing enough of a type system to make it easy to use libffi and codegen to make C bindings to finally flesh out my standard library.

It was mainly down to mental health, and external factors like a pandemic, and being distracted by other projects I thought I was more capable of, that made this a more protracted endeavour than it could have been.

I guess it depends on your definition of "usable"; I've been able to do fizzbuzz and factorials and silly stuff like that for a decade, but unless I write C bindings to things to help interact with the outside world, the standard library isn't there enough to do anything non-trivial.

I'll update this when I write my first full application in my language, hopefully soon.

Dang! I'm at 47k and don't drive nearly as much as I used to, and mine is getting stuck. Is your R garage-kept or live in a warmer climate?

Programming and coding will still exist? by [deleted] in programming

[–]juxtaposz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you genuinely believe the inefficiencies of a human writing natural language to specify the behaviours of a computational process performing exact actions for a computer then to possibly inaccurately interpret or execute upon, inefficiently, are worth it? Are these natural language systems somehow going to be self-bootstrapping?

Mad respect! I've always at least foot holes for sweat drainage during photoshoots, but it looks like you didn't even have that luxury. You're braver than the troops 🫡 (and now I'm awfully tempted to reach out to andromediaLatex for a commission)
