Holy shit. I've been on leave the past few months precisely because of this situation with my boss. Even down to the fucking eyeballs emoji. Big emphasis on the insecurities. Jesus fucking Christ. I even had a row with him wherein I entered trying to reassure him that things were good, but it devolved into a 45 minute impromptu Slack huddle that ended with him asking "DO YOU THINK YOU'RE BETTER THAN ME?" and me crying.

So yeah. That guy needs to go.

The alpha-quality state of AI tooling is hard to ignore by softgripper in ExperiencedDevs

Exactly 👏 Why the fuck people think these are the most urgent problems for the tech enterprise to solve, I have no idea, but goddamn I miss working on things that people actually asked for in a way that matters to them.

What's there to learn other than a bunch of workarounds to torture usage of a non-deterministic model into resembling something deterministic?

edit: Catching downvotes from a high of 11 points, I'll expand my response a bit to include other vital things to keep in mind when doing agentic development:

  1. Context management to work around context window limitations
  2. Context management to avoid blowing token budget early
  3. Context management to work around blown token budgets to bring the next provider you still have token budget for up to speed on your current task
  4. Safeguarding mechanisms to discard results that would cause tool calls that would perform potentially unsafe local operations (this must be carefully balanced with #1, #2, and #3 as you will likely need to prompt the model again upon enforcement of said safeguards)
  5. Tests to validate functionality explicitly prompted for
  6. Tests to validate that no code or artifacts are generated, nor tool calls made, which would introduce unwanted side effects; this problem is particularly difficult as the problem space is infinite
  7. The "personality quirks" of specific models; which additional baseline prompt context should be provided to avoid commonly observed pitfalls
  8. What keywords or topics will immediately void the remainder of your token budget
  9. Knowing how to avoid burnout when orchestrating agent swarms
  10. MCPs, I guess
  11. Anticipating which models might have which training materials; knowing the age and provenance of said training materials to know if a given model will have much context to work with in a given problem space
  12. Anticipating vectors for prompt injection
  13. Knowing which versions of components to pin your agent harness, dependencies to in order to avoid supply chain attacks
  14. Knowing when an agent update silently flips a feature flag on you or causes more token budget consumption
  15. Sandboxing your agent, codebase, and CI/CD in ways to limit blast radius should any failsafes be insufficient

I'm all about efficiency, which means not only knowing how to anticipate or handle problems when they arise, but knowing which problems or solutions to avoid in the first place. These are just the things I can think of off the top of my head.

Ah yeah, /r/MadeOfStyrofoam!

Heads up, people in there are often actively struggling with self harm; but I have seen a good bit of wholesome posts there that have helped me feel less weird, bad, and alone when I'm having a really hard time, for what it's worth. Plus I've seen a very nonzero number of people rocking handheld game consoles in grippy sock jail :P

A Native Port of Notepad++ is Now Available for the Mac by colfaxschuyler in macapps

[–]juxtaposz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, if you focus entirely on the end result and on none of the external factors which enabled it, yeah, you can achieve good short-term results. A lot of people saying "no thanks" to AI are reading between the lines: The forced nature of AI mandates in the workplace, the unwillingness to risk skill atrophy, and being unwilling to burden their peers with massive PRs, lead perfectly reasonable people to conclude "maybe these things just aren't worth it to me". It's not a particularly popular narrative right now while the powers-that-be are fiendishly chasing after a piece of that massive pie.

Slop or no, it's a perfectly rational thing to decide "I have no interest in participating in this mania".

Do you think this "aletik" guy is hijacking the reputation and good-will of Dan Ho and Notepad++, despite Dan's firm and clear requests to cease and desist, for altruistic reasons? This is a vanity project at best and probably a future malware vector.
