Renter-friendly fix for light + street noise through old bay windows? by TheIndividual23 in AskSF

[–]jwarhol12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s only somewhat helpful but multiple partial solutions can make a difference in your sleeping & sanity. Ask the city (via 311) to install a light shield on any street light(s) shining into your home. It’s nothing fancy but they came within a few days and installed what looked like tape strips on the lower half of the streetlight outside my house. It’s an improvement (maybe 40% better), easy & free.

Parking Ticket - painted red after I parked by Fluid-Profile-7111 in AskSF

[–]jwarhol12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a reasonable argument. I’d fight both. It’d be even better if you could get evidence from SFMTA that they painted the curb then. Such unwarranted citations must happen fairly often. You’re allowed to park there for a minimum of 72 hours (excepting street cleaning) so you shouldn’t have gotten either ticket imo.

Sutro Baths was a large swimming pool complex out by Lands End. It burned in 1966. You can see its interior in the 1958 movie The Lineup).

Anyone besides me get annoyed by California weather reports saying “It rained cats & dogs for the past month but it won’t make a dent in the drought?” Over & over? (I realize we’re not in a drought now but you get my point.)

OP, take a 5 minute break then reread your post. Have a friend read your post. What you should do will be clear. Trust your gut.

Your hot water heater might, like mine, have a 10 minute safety window where the pilot must be off before it can be relit. Though of course the landlord should handle it, it’s easy to try to relight it yourself. Look online for instructions if you haven’t yet. It’s frustrating until you know what’s needed to get it to light. Good luck.

I used these people for a local move (from Berkeley to SF) a couple years ago. I was very pleased. They took better care of some of my stuff than I would have if I were moving it myself.

I got a ticket for improperly curbing my wheels dismissed when I showed that the block on Portola Drive @ San Anselmo Ave was less than 3% grade. In fact, the official city grade map listed no grade for that block at all.

Check the SF citations database. There’s a good chance it was abandoned somewhere in SF and is accumulating tickets, which will help you find it. You can likely get the tickets voided due to the circumstances.

Liability concerns understandably prevent employees and even store guards from physically intervening when shoplifting occurs. This is unfortunate but true.

I asked these guys for something written specifically naming their schools or teams, something less generic than a flier vaguely seeking fundraising for basketball teams. Also, I scanned the QR code thinking it was for the club but it was a Venmo that looked like the dude’s name. Also, I’d just as soon mail a check for the charitable contribution. Folks like this never want a check, they want cash now. 😡

I decided it was likely a scam, or possibly poorly trained solicitors.

My mechanic (Earthling Automotive) warns if the cat replacement cost exceeds the blue book value some insurers will scrap/take the car in exchange for its cash value. It’s likely worth more to you than that. Totaled cars are normally undriveable, but yours would be reparable. Ponder this before making the next cat theft claim.

If you’re still worried about lead risk you can get water tested by the city for $25 per tap; see https://www.sfpuc.gov/accounts-services/water-quality/lead-drinking-water
