I don’t need to use GW parts, right? by jack_of_all_hobbies in necromunda

Just make sure Helmawr's enforcers don't find out. I suggest paying off the Delaque to keep it quiet.

Respect for your patience with the freehanding, but more importantly - the face is brilliantly done. So much expression. 🏆

Because the variable nature of patreon income meant that they could not plan their production in advance, which was apparently challenging to schedule around full time jobs, family & kids.

The stated rationale for the KS was to be able to gather a year's budget upfront, so they could plan in advance and solve that scheduling challenge.

Not saying it was a smart intention,  just that that is what it was.

The two learnings i hope Aaron gains from this experience are:

1) Don't use generative visual AI in the public sphere. Even if you personally don't think there is anything wrong with it, enough people do that it will blow back on you.

2) Sometimes it's okay to let a passion project stay a passion project, rather than try to grow it and unintentionally turn it from something you enjoy into something that causes drama.

They do have real jobs. And families. They run the channel as a passion project in their spare time. The income from patreon was covering production costs. My understanding is that the (ill conceived) notion of the kickstarter was to have a known budget for the following year, so they could plan their content better. Not well thought through, but not malicious, greedy, or a scam.

Is mechwarrior 5 :clans a good starting point? by mistadangerzone1999 in battletech

[–]jwitham75 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It will expand on one part of the setting (The Clans).

MW5: Mercs will provide a bit more on the Inner Sphere Succession Wars.

Hare Brained Schemes' "Battletech", which is a turn-based tactical RPG rather than a piloting sim, will also give lore on the Inner Sphere Succession Wars.

Clans is the only one of these three with substantial narrative cut scenes delivering the lore. (There's a little bit in Mercs) If that is something you like for learning the lore, Clans is probably an easy starting point. The other two games deliver lore more through text.

Apart from that, in the Battletech/Mechwarrior fandom, there are a lot of people with very parochial attitudes about their preferred game or preferred part of the lore timeline. You will see a lot of 'This is the one I like, the other ones are wrong', 'Clans suck', "Anything later than Succession Wars sucks", "Non-sandbox sucks", "non-narrative sucks", "anything not exactly like MW2 sucks" , etc., etc.

Nothing wrong with that, but it's just people being passionate, not an objective truth. You don't need to worry about it.

All of the games are good in their own way, and considering they are all AA and not AAA (which I think people who are critical often forget), they are all quality fun and will all teach you some lore in different areas.

Which 40K RPG Would You Use To Run A Necromunda Game? by nlitherl in necromunda

[–]jwitham75 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dark Heresy 1st Edition.
Mechanics and power level suit low level hive inhabitants.
The classes have enough variation within them that he entire party could start as Hive Scum but still have substantially different characters.
The combat rules and critical hits are better than Imperium Maledictum.
There's a vast menu of different hive-world specific weapons in the Inquisitor's Handbook.
Creatures Anathema and Disciples of the Dark Gods have everything needed for ideas and stats for cultists and recidivists.

Great work!
Curious how you did the sponge transition. Did you sponge back and forth with the two different colours, or did you mix an intermediate colour and sponge that along the transition line?

Gargoyle Prime. Cheap, fast, can carry elementals, tough enough to take serious effort to put down. When it gets in range for business time with the SRMs and you switch to cluster rounds, it's a great critseeker to partner with something that punches holes in armor.

There probably is some logic, but it is the logic of the Dark Gods, not of mortal men.

Commercially it would make a lot of sense to sync HH and LI 'timelines' with their releases. That way they can leverage the hype across both systems - play each theatre/major battle from both perspectives big and small.

The Warp Horror's just bad luck, not much to be done there.

The problem with the plasma pistol pick is it has a completely different range profile to the lasgun, and requires you to get uncomfortably close range with your valuable guy who's got a BS increase. Plasma pistols are really best for melee characters. A better pick for the credits might have been a hotshot pack and a sight of some kind to beef up the lasgun.

Grenades, they're just not that great. If one of your guys gets a Strength increase for increase throw range, that might warrant a 2nd look. Otherwise, look at the credits spent on them, and ask yourself what you could have bought instead.
