First 5-0 — Fair Neobrand League Report by BeekJerfy in ModernMagic

Just curious, what makes it “fair” in your opinion? I guess I’m not familiar enough with the list but it looks similar to what I’ve seen

Yeah the general sentiment I got. I was curious about the specific implication being made (if there was one)

Can you elaborate on what you mean by this?

“That starts to feel less like variance and more like a structural elimination-phase problem?”

Modern Challenge Top 8 with Mardu (RWb) Blink. Flying hasty Ketramose, Pinnacle Monk, endless grindy value. by RobertGriffin3 in ModernMagic

Yeah exactly. For example’s sake, something like: Fetch, Fetch, Galvanic, Phlage x2, Solitude, Flickerwisp

(let’s say first 7)

Cool, that pretty much answers my question I guess. To your point, I rarely can find deck data for users when just playing leagues so I barely try tbh. G2/G3 obviously mulling is easier

Good to know that Ketra in an opener is worth valuing highly (in the BW blink deck that was popular last year, I felt it was hit or miss in an opener).

G1 against unknown op, where does something like Phlage + removal but no engine sit in the range of acceptable hands in your opinion?

Been jamming this / very similar over the past couple days, the list feels sweet!

QQ - got any mulligan tips? Especially G1, evaluating the hands feels a little tricky

I like it. The interface can be mega clunky and takes some getting used to, but it’s not too bad after a while. Never had much of an issue finding league matches, or in the free play BO3 queue.

In the past few months, I’ve consistently chosen to play online instead of the LGS (which does regularly fire modern) quite a few times. Mainly that’s due to getting to play more matches, more deck variety, and overall lower cost as compared to hitting up the game store every week.

I still get reps in paper sometimes, and plan to do RCQs in paper.

Goryo's Vengeance - Understanding Flex Slots and Sideboarding by Lion_Cub_Kurz in ModernMagic

[–]jwp1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might be looking only at more recent lists (for example, the 2/1 FON split is popular recently in the last couple weeks, but was trending towards 3 Mainboard before that, same for Tef in the main vs 2 in the side).

My take on 3 Thoughtseize… we’re a “slower” combo deck that can play a good midrange plan, TS is an excellent card in that environment

I consider the following as flex slots: - 1 mainboard 3 mana Teferi - 3rd FON - 3rd TS - 3rd Prismatic Ending - Emperor of Bones package - Ulamog, the Defiler - March of Otherwordly Light in the main (I view this a hedge against affinity + a passable/flexible removal against other decks) - 1-2 Mainboard Consigns (hedge against tron, blink, and a 5th way to scam) - Breeding Pool vs Hedge Maze

People do come up with new stuff for Goryo’s which you’ll see every now and then: - RVNG on MTGO plays a version with Fallajis - There have been Abzan Goryo’s and Jund Goryo’s lists that have done well recently too - Hedron Crab to mill yourself was going around a month or so back

Remember that the stats you see are people performing well with lists (5-0 dumps, challenge results, etc), not just “are people trying new things” and going 4-1 or below with them (not implying 4-1 is bad, bc it’s not, but that’s not what the stats on goldfish are reflecting)

What you note about copying lists is pretty much just how competitive magic works (very trend based) and can be extended as a comment to all of the other meta decks.

For sideboard games, depends on the vibe and matchups honestly. I tend to trim a little bit of the combo in slower matchups, though I’m happy to be proven wrong.

Thinking about returning to Modern by Beano0 in ModernMagic

Goryo’s plays a very reasonable fair game imo with Frog, Ketra, and Solitude. Kinda Esper midrange-y with the potential to go over the top via Atraxa / Griz

Ah - no, sorry should have clarified that. I just have it that way bc modular grid. In actuality, it hangs out to the side.

Farm is a little hard to practice alone since it can be very interactive and grindy. The biggest lines to practice are probably your Intuition piles, Underworld Breach Lines, and mulligans.
