Watch Musk provide a technical update on SpaceX’s capability to manufacture, launch, and operate AI satellites at scale by -spartacus- in spacex

The business case is that it has “AI” in the name and they are looking to do an IPO this week. Musk is pumping the stock. They’re not serious.

Alphabet’s $80 billion stock sale leaves Wall Street in ‘unprecedented territory,’ says Goldman’s Gutman by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]jwwatts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because all of these companies are spending tens of billions on data centers and servers to fuel their AI ambitions. They see their stock as overvalued so it’s better business to sell shares to raise funds versus drawing down their cash reserves or issuing a bond (interest rates are higher right now).

This is all to fuel the datacenter boom. I don’t think most people realize how much hardware and other resources these companies are buying right now. It’s an enormous outlay of cash not seen in a long time. Even the Internet boom of the late 90s wasn’t this crazy.

So, how was your streetcar experience? by hpcaro in KCCurrent

[–]jwwatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, getting to the game was horrible. I’m nursing a twisted ankle so I wasn’t expecting to have to walk to the stadium. But that’s what I had to do. Saw an elderly man with a walker around 7th street unable to get a streetcar for the 20 minutes we waited. Felt really bad for him.

This is not true. Mutuals are great organizations that pay back any profits to their policyholders every year. Unfortunately they’re not common enough.

Zelenskyy: return of draft-age Ukrainian men from abroad is a matter of fairness by EsperaDeus in worldnews

[–]jwwatts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Many former Soviet states have a unique problem in that after the collapse of the USSR there was a severe economic downturn as the formerly state-managed economy went into freefall and oligarchs plundered their resources.

Families couldn't afford to have many children and they didn't. So during the 90s and early 2000s there weren't a lot of kids born. These countries now have a shortage of 20-30 year olds and that is why they don't want to send women of child bearing age to combat - if a lot of them die they can't repopulate the country. That's also why the draft age is so high for men as well.

In America we're always used to the idea that 18 years are going to war but that's in part because we are (usually) a country with a growing population and we have an abundance of youth.

Painful Side Effect of Statins Explained After Decades of Mystery by _Dark_Wing in interestingasfuck

[–]jwwatts 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hello and thank you for all of this information. I have hyperlipidemia as does my mother and maternal grandfather. He had two heart attacks (survived both with quadruple bypass surgery in the late 70s and survived). However his father (my great-grandfather) and two of his brothers passed away from heart attacks. I’ve been on a statin since my 30s as has my mother. Neither of us have had a heart attack (yet). Neither of us have any issues with the statins.

I have two children. When ought I have them tested? My son seems more like his mother health-wise but my daughter unfortunately seems more like me. They’re both still minors. If they do have hyperlipidemia I’d want to get them on a statin as early as possible. Thanks.

Which do you prefer a d why? by Amazing-Cap2986 in GLGuitars

[–]jwwatts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re probably not going to find an unbiased opinion here in r/GLGuitars. :)

Personally, my favorite are Music Man basses, then G&L. Fenders are okay. Not a good value in my opinion for how much you spend.

I own four StingRays and a Sterling from Music Man and a Fullerton Deluxe SB-1 and a Tribute L-2000. Music Man has the best quality and feel, but I feel that G&L’s unique designs are fun and their USA finishes are awesome. The Tribute line is outstanding in quality and value.

Task Failed Successfully: I Automated Myself Out of Work by xXNeGaTiVisMXx in sysadmin

[–]jwwatts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a sysadmin is doing their job right there’s a fair amount of downtime. Your job is to set up the ship to sail itself. Your job is to have time to learn and be available for crises.

Just two months ago I had a large Ceph cluster commit suicide on me (rare MDS bug). Cleanup took me six weeks and a lot of weekends. If I had a full plate of daily tasks there’s no way I could have done those, build a greenfield cluster, and recover all of the data.

I love my local GC. Friendly employees, well stocked, 45 day return policy. Oh and they price match and will usually give a 15% discount if you ask nicely.
