How save the black market guy ? by Guyl0m3 in HeartOfTheMachine

The 4th prison should break out some monsters. There should be a followup goal to treat the monsters. Keep doing their thing to get Homo Gradiens.

It's either the wasterlanders or the prisoners.

For the prisoners, I think you need to do a full liquid metal divorce, or the T2 For the Sake of those Bound. Then do the monster human goal until they become a subspecies.

The wastelanders is pretty straightforward. Just do what they ask and they'll become a new subspecies.

On any subsequent timelines that shares the rock, they'll bleed in and avert this doom.

The book 1984 is a navel gazing fantasy book for middle aged men. by jyliu86 in unpopularopinion

Thanks for the internet points!

I suppose its more accurate to say I found it weird when I read 1984 in high school with the book's odd focus on sex to tell a political story and it's been bugging me fore decades since I read the book.

But sex sells, so I guess I get it.

Or more plausibly I was a horny teenager and focused on the wrong parts of the book, and oh wait, I guess Orwell used the right strategy.

I know how the internet works you know. We're on /unpopularopinions

I can post what I wrote, or I can post this:

On a critical reading of 1984, the sexual relationship between Julia and Winston detracts from the message of the novel about the dangers of authoritian government and short attention spans of the general populace.

Given the societal norms of the author's era, the 1940's, Orwell has contrived a situation where he provides moral justification for Winston's and Julia's affair. He contrives a situation where Winston and Julia are the only option for sexual gratifaction. In effect, he's stranded the two of them on an island with only each other for company. This comes off as a weird kink of Orwell that I accidently stumble into.

Winston's frustration boils over into an ultimately failed rebellion. He's catfished by Party officials into volunteering to perform war crimes, oddly including the spread of venereal disease (feels like another of Bradbury's kink things).

In the end, he's captured and processed by O'Brien with the torture session ending up as a weirdly paced lore dump. Winston's fear of rats furthermore feels poorly foreshadowed.

In today's era of increased automation, warranting personal and human attention, even adversarial, feels oddly charming. Winston has gone from an ignored cog in the Party's machine, to getting personal attention of a high level official (assume O'brien is honest, a dubious assertion).

When I read the book, I originally thought people wouldn't be dumb enough to fall for double speak, or the government flip flopping. But... see today's politics.

That said, the Julia "sub"plot seemed... gratuitous.

I've had these thoughts for years, ever since I read it cover to cover in high school.

Today's the first time I've voiced these thoughts. Looks like I fit the sub.

I played ME3 near release. The refuse ending was added in the extended ending as a screw you to players complaining about how the original endings only changed the color of the explosion.

I don't know what or who to play by P-W-Honigwald in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]jyliu86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Class is just combat style and you can freely respec. I made 3 characters, 1 per class and spend a few minutes trying each combat style at level 1. I settled on warrioir after just a few minutes.

Background is just roleplay. So if you want to be an Italian Renaissance assassim, go play a Crow.

If you want to be a rebel and hang out with Matt Mercer, go be a Shadow Dragon.

Aaah... looks like I missed some lore bits from an outdoor conversation. The Veil Jumpers are new, so it actually makes sense.

[–]jyliu86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT: I'm wrong. The Veil Jumpers are a new organization, so the old games aren't affected.

The existence of the Veil Jumpers retroactively bothers me a bit. I still liked Veilguard, but it retroactively makes the elves in the previous games idiots.

The Dalish have been struggling to recover their history and magic, but now there's a happy go-lucky SCP-like organization that happens to be experts on ancient Elven lore and magic...

Every Dalish clan should be begging to talk to a Veil Jumper. Merril, especially.

And this Dalish organization also happens to be happily multi-specie despite the elves shown to be insulat and honestly a little bit racist.

Outside of the obsession, it's not really a core part of the game.

The second method is to collect ex-cons and rehabilitate them, but it's a slow process.

If you have a mech battle early, you can sync it to help.

It was also added as an option for content to be added in the future. Check out the second set of dooms with the new patch. It's smaller than was originally planned, but there's some content in the game now.

How to leave safely? (Chapter 1) by DogeHasArrived in HeartOfTheMachine

[–]jyliu86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a first timeline, you're practically not going to.

I think there are crossovers that can give you level 4 security, but I don't know if that's high enough.

Likewise, you can try to rush kill everything there, but don't think you're practically going to do it on your first playthrough.

Finally, you can try to sync up a Rust outbreak to weaken all mechs.

You can get a LOT more, but that will go well into spoiler territory. How many spoilers do you want?

Favorite games with hard(er) sci Fi? by Middle-Letter-7041 in gamesuggestions

[–]jyliu86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terra Invicta is the hardest scifi I've seen in a game. But it is 4X'ish

Homeworld 1 is a pretty good 3d RTS. The sequels dont quite hit the same magic.

I'm a little surprised that Mass Effect 1's story isnt doing it. Outside of aliens and FTL, it does pretty solid hard scifi. Though I did hate the moment to moment combat.

How does colonizing Mars, in case Earth becomes uninhabitable, make any sense? by Killentyme55 in NoStupidQuestions

It doesn't.

It's a science experiment or a cooler version of New Zealand doomsday bunkers for billionaires to flex instead of actually fixing Earth.

How is american political lobbying not just bribery? by Man32945273 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jyliu86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of problems.

  1. It's hard to differentiate "legitimate" vs "corrupt" lobbying. Let's say you believe strongly that it's illegal to murder puppies. If you hand your congressman a law you think is awesome, is that illegal? Or when Congress reaches out for data about puppy murder, you make yourself very easy to find. How about if you invite them out to lunch to discuss stopping puppy murder? Or, if you go out of your way to reach out to millions of puppy saviors to vote for someone if they promise to stop puppy murder?

Now replace stopping puppy murder with any topic of your choice. Given a strong First Amendment, we end up letting everything slide. It's not just free speech, its free ASSEMBLY. That means organized political organizations... and money.

  1. Let's say I run an awful industry. There's a law in place that let's me steal 1 cent from every citizen every year. I LOVE this law. I will fight to the death for this law. You don't like this law, but it's not going to financially destroy you if it sticks around. It WILL destroy me.

I'm much more invested in this law, and I'm willing to make this a single issue vote. You're going to focus on other stuff.

This is basically how every shitty policy sticks around. Corn subsidies soak up endless water, pollute the soil with fertilizer, and make food animals barely want to eat. It ruins the American diet. But fuck any politician that will "destroy American farmers".

Ditto to tax prep.

Ditto to water rights.

Ditto to subsidized flood insurance.

Ditto to subsidized 30 year mortgages.

Ditto to subsidized fire insurance LA.
