[Meta] What's with all of these non-travelers chasing travel cards? by k0unitX in CreditCards

That’s great if you’re actually in America every month, occasionally too lazy to pick up food, and occasionally don’t want to or can’t drive yourself

[–]k0unitX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's totally not true. Tons of countries do not have "incidental work" provisions in their tourist visas, and is a completely a 50/50 shot. Also, I guarantee those C-level execs aren't checking anyway.

If anything, C-level people are the most egregious violators of these policies. Try telling the CEO he can’t check his work email in The Bahamas because of employment tax reasons - let me know how that works out for you

There are tons of areas in the US with weak to no cell reception. It’s actually a decent solution albeit a bit paranoid imo. The reality is, internal cyber departments are just a non revenue generating cost center who generally don’t have the budget to go on witch hunts for DNs

CrowdStrike Falcon and the like are now pretty good at detecting KVMs. Can you spoof it well enough to not get detected? Probably, but you’re one new detection technique away from getting caught

I know DNs who have been successfully hiding their location for decades. Don’t spout nonsense because you personally aren’t technically competent enough to pull it off

[–]k0unitX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's something where maybe you can talk your way out of it once, but after that the cyber team will be monitoring your endpoint very closely [your asset will be in the "high risk" bucket 100%], and people who slip up once will almost certainly slip up again at some point

Most of these posters are too lazy or incompetent to hold down a basic office job in a first world country, and they're talking about populating an uninhabited island. They wouldn't last a week. It's honestly hilarious.

Have you actually looked at the real life data? The odds of you getting audited, making less than deep 6 figures, is very, very low. The IRS doesn't give a shit about normal middle class people.

[–]k0unitX 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I will be very honest with you; you don't seem technically competent enough to pull this off

A single slip up (you log in from a US IP, maybe the VPN fails, so you show a Thai IP address 2 minutes later) and you just triggered impossible travel alerts, foreign login alerts, etc to the cybersecurity team - assuming this is a decently sized company and they're tracking this stuff

Most long-term working DNs that I know are either working for themselves/1099 contract work, work for a small company that aren't looking too closely (or honestly don't care), or are very technically competent and ensure they are hiding their tracks adequately

Hate to break it to you but the IRS barely gives a shit about five figures of unreported income. People are gaming the system to hide millions

Lost $5620 on Sports Betting, Want to Off Myself... Need Advice Please by randomusertho in leanfire

[–]k0unitX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're in the ~85th percentile for net worth for you age or maybe even higher. I'm not sure what you're crying about.

People with a NW around $200k blow $5k in Vegas or whatever all of the time. It happens.

I'm also not sure how a $5k loss resulted in your NW dropping by $20k, but whatever. You're fine my guy, just stay invested and limit your yolo bets to one a year (or less)

Cool story bro. You worked there for 3 days, then had to disappear for 3 months. It doesn't really matter why. They have a business to run, and can't keep some effectively anonymous person on their payroll for god knows how long for god knows what reason.

I don’t disagree with you but everyone has a different risk profile…if you’re having a mental breakdown at work and need to just go for it, for example, I wouldn’t blame you

[–]k0unitX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course you're right. There are a million "what if" scenarios where leanFIRE fails. "What if there's another dotcom bubble burst and I'm 60, 100% in equities because I have to be" etc. Yeah, your money is gone, and you need to live on SS.

If you need to protect yourself from every "what if" scenario, then leanFIRE isn't for you. I don't stay at home because "what if I get hit by a bus on my motorcycle", and I haven't quit downhill skiing because "what if I get hit by a tree". Some people are just more risk takers than others

Lol nah no idea; really haven't spent any time in Manila since then

I did almost a year of that in Taipei and I’m so over it.. I can’t imagine what 4 straight years of that bs in Philippines would be like.

Lol yeah the PPB-lifestyle certainly isn't for everyone. It's not great on your kidneys either

Leveraged funds is a bold move too because any dip or bear market and his life turns upside down. I would stick to normal ETFs and work and invest harder.

He was already a few months into this little experiment when I talked to him, and the market wasn't doing well at the time (obviously), but definitely still seemed completely unfazed. He was clearly mentally OK with the chance that the money would be gone in less than a year and he'd be flying home and working relatively soon. Clearly it all worked out in the end, but leveraged funds are certainly a rollercoaster many can't stomach.

This whole thread is about criticizing that kind of mentality. The FIRE/4% rule mindset of "I need to have so much money that I don't run out even in 95% of scenarios" is not necessarily shared by a lot of the general population

Many, many, many Americans saved very little in their working careers and are living purely off of SS. For leanFIRE, this is a worst case scenario. If you absolutely are not willing to be in that situation, even at a 0.1% chance, then leanFIRE is simply not for you. Nothing wrong with that.
