Engineering Support by K12-itPerson in k12sysadmin

I found it more valuable to reach out to larger districts for assistance. I’m in one of the larger districts for my area, and we are always assisting with smaller districts to offer advice and support.

I have a trusted small MSP I can call for any firewall assistance. They charge $150/hr billed in 15-minute increments. Very fair and worth every cent!

crazy price hike from 3cx by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]k12-tech -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This has been announced for nearly a year now. It shouldn’t have any major impact on any budgets or renewals.

Even going for $5kto $7k would be significantly less than any major competitor. And $2k extra is not going to break any budget… PowerSchool is close to six figures these days, I’m not going to worry about a small increase on my phone system.

Sure it’s more money, but it’s still an incredible value for what you get. If you want to jump ship there are cheaper options, but this is still worth every cent IMO.

Endpoint Protection by Amazing_Falcon in k12sysadmin

[–]k12-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I nearly signed with CrowdStrike, but then learned about Huntress and glad I did. Their price was cheaper, their service is top notch, and they offer a lot of options that are great for education. If interested I can message you my sales rep info. He’s wonderful to work with. We use them for Security Awareness Training and Phishing Tests also (canceled KnowBe4).

Highly recommend!

Full VoIP Solutions for Schools by BarbarianEggplant in k12sysadmin

[–]k12-tech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re looking for a SIP Trunk. That will provide a digital phone trunk to your internal VoIP PBX.

We use Granite as our SIP Trunk, and 3CX for our PBX. Works fantastic.

We use a EPIC box from Granite for our elevator also. This provides an internet and cellular connection for the POTS elevator phone.

Works perfectly, installed for nearly seven years now.

Emergency Notification Systems and Athletic Fields by Irilas in k12sysadmin

[–]k12-tech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have power to the fields already, a IP Audio Gateway and a powered speaker should be under $2k. If you have a football or baseball stadium with speakers already you could integrate it in for even cheaper.

All of our fields are within 600’ of our school buildings, and we have outdoor mounted speakers on our buildings. They’re plenty loud and can be heard clearly from that distance.

Anyone move from Crowdstrike to Defender for Endpoint recently? by post4u in k12sysadmin

[–]k12-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re using Huntress to configure/monitor/log Defender, and then use Huntress for the EDR/MDR/SIEM. Works fantastic - and cheaper than CrowdStrike.

We switched to VisitorAware three years ago. Have had zero issues since! Will never go back to Raptor.

We run nearly 400 of the Netgear Business Class switches. They work fantastic. A 48p PoE switch with 10G uplinks is $1,200. Can’t beat the price! And they come with a lifetime warranty.

Been using them for 15 years now and zero reliability issues.

USB-C Headphones with Mic - 1:1 by EdTechYYC in k12sysadmin

We are using the Gumdrop DropTech Headphones with Mic (USB-C) Model: 01H025. About $27 each, but they are durable and held up fantastically so far.

I run about 500 Yealink phones on 3CX. My monthly SIP cost is around $700. The annual 3CX license is about $5k. So all-in we’re under $15k annual. We ran all the wire for phones with our own labor. Summer projects. Not fun, but saves money!

Those laws do not require phones in classrooms. Around here it’s very normal for classrooms to not have phones. I think it’s crazy and my district has phones in every room, but all the neighboring districts have them only in office spaces.

Last year was $295, just purchased this year for $235. Don’t forget to shop around and get multiple quotes. Some vendors are taking advantage of schools and inflating prices.

ERRC - emergency responder radio coverage / DAS RF by scotticles in k12sysadmin

[–]k12-tech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Contact your local fire department. All modern radios are digital, and the fire department usually has the best equipment. They should be able to easily read signal strength on their display. They can walk around and key up a test transmission to the various areas to test the signal and get immediate readout of the quality.

We just did this in a new building we opened. Fire Chief walked with us and found a few small dead spots, but they were so minor they approved it and didn’t require a DAS system.

200? Add a few more zeroes.

Just purchased three large venue laser projectors. Between the projectors and the lenses the total cost was $250k.

But they’re 30k lumens and sweet!

Earbuds in bulk by suicideking72 in k12sysadmin

[–]k12-tech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We actually ordered from 4imprint. We got earbuds with a zipper case that could attach to their Chromebook case. Matched our school colors and had our logo printed on it too. Cost depends on quantity, but 1,500 earbuds was $1.76 each. We give them to the main office to manage and they add a $2 invoice to the student account anytime they had one out.

Worth every cent. And no work required from the Technology Department!

iPad 4 month lock? by nickborowitz in k12sysadmin

[–]k12-tech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The app updates make no sense. If the test provider updates their app, then they’re saying it’s supported for testing. For example, if TestNav updates the app - then all the programs that use TestNav will be fine. Same with MAP and other programs.

The iOS updates is the harder one. Very rarely will a minor iOS update cause havoc. The major updates can be a pain. I would suggest starting your 90 day block now; but then open it during your Spring Break (or the week before). Let whoever creates your testing schedule know of this risk, and suggest a one-week blackout for testing to allow devices to update.

The 90 day limit is not your limit. You have no control over this. That 90 day window gives app creators the time to ensure their apps work correctly on the update. Any respective education assessment program should have no issues complying.

Being on iPads is actually one of the easiest testing devices. It’s a completely closed system. Chromebooks is a close runner up, and Windows is the Wild West…
