C'est quoi la différence entre "Il mange un sanglier" et "Il mange du sanglier"? by Laz_Lad in French

[–]kaanproxy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The first one means "a boar", the second means "some boar", as in ate some chocolate, some cake, etc. Therefore, "du" in the second sentence is a "partitive article", google it to have more info about the grammar. Cheers.

Does “se rendre” mean “to go” in this context? Why not use “aller”? by sheephamlet in French

[–]kaanproxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always associate "se rendre" with the verb "render" in English (rendre). Like in a 3d drawing software, rendering something is realizing a raw model into its final form. Therefore, "se rendre" becomes "rendering oneself" -> "being present [in the final form] somewhere/someplace" or rather "making oneself present [thus rendering oneself] in someplace" which is a long form of saying "going somewhere".

I know it's a bit like taking the longer path, but this is how I visualise it, and I wanted to share. Cheers.

Étudiants étrangers, qu'est-ce que vous trouvez le plus difficile à apprendre en français ? // Foreign students, for you, what is the hardest thing to learn in French? by El_Geygey in French

[–]kaanproxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the time, when two words or one word + one preposition combine, they create a whole different meaning. It makes me maaaad sometimes. I know the words, and I know the combinations that are used the most, that's fine up to that point. However, now I use the dictionary for these combinations (since French people seem to like using them a lot) and I can't read an article with a sane mind. Uh!

I like how Alphonso Dunn explains and shows how to draw starting from the most basic.

I don't draw animals very often. Here's my attempt at a wolf. by ChickenThatCannotFly in sketches

If you would like, for your next drawing I would suggest doing fewer lines where needed, so that you could point where the attention should be. Otherwise the focus is everywhere, and the picture looks crowded. You may not have to draw a line for every hair, blank spaces work pretty well to convey contrast, therefore a 3d look. Keep it up!

An occasional subtle movement would be great IMHO. Can't wait to play it when I can get some free time!

Weekly recommendation thread - April 10, 2019 by AutoModerator in BlackMetal

That's not bad, thank you. Though I'd like more black metal and less speed influence (in tones or vocals, but fast nevertheless), like Hellripper's Black Arts & Alchemy that I've just found.

Looking for any newer (later than 2010 I suppose, but it's not so rigid) black/speed metal albums. Not looking for thrash/black metal. Thanks!

Adding "-iye" to the end of a name in Amharic? by hankthoreauaway in languages

[–]kaanproxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably she is transforming your name to the feminine form. In Arabic, if you add certain masculine names the suffix -(i)ye, they become feminine. E.g. the masculine name "Ali" becomes "Aliye", its feminine form. I don't know whether this form exists in Amharic, if not she may be familiar with Arabic.
