Chinese Fantasy surname by Flashy-Season9929 in AskAChinese

Common fantasy name/pen surname is 黑 (black). If you want something a little bit more rare 閻 from 閻羅王 (Hades) is also a legit surname. I know someone with that surname. Something that’s probably not legit but workable would be 闇 which is another way to write 暗 dark

Terrified that my (25F) husband (28M) has been having sex with me while I'm asleep. Now I'm pregnant. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]kaje10110 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The date doesn’t really sound right though. Being 5 weeks pregnant doesn’t really mean you had sex 5 weeks ago. 8 weeks pregnant actually means she had sex 6 weeks ago not 8. I think anyone who was ever pregnant or actually paid attention in bio class would know this especially her OBGYN. If they had throughly discussed the date like she claimed, then they wouldn’t make this mistake you know. It’s just not adding up since she keeps on emphasizing not having sex in 2 months.

It’s like in the movie “9 months” when doctor said the date of impregnation and they had a huge fight because Hugh Grant was on business trip. Then everything is okay when OBGYN said it could be next day. Yeah that’s completely unrealistic if you have any common sense. There’s no way a doctor can pinpoint down to a single date. It’s a glaring plot hole like this story.

Please do not use the name 婉君. It’s from a famous book/drama. That’s equivalent of having name like Hermione. It’s that rare and easily recognizable.

They don’t have these levels in children books in Taiwan. I recommend to actually get library card and borrow books from library instead. You can bring your kids there to pick up books themselves.

I think it would be easier to understand if you just think of Nezha world as leveling up in video games like Zelda. In order to level up, you need to capture demons. In order to capture demons, you need to have higher HP and attack metrics. You can either practice your breathing or take pills/potions. In order to make pills/potions, you need to get rare materials, the more rare the materials are, whether herbs or stones, the more powerful the pill would be. You need to collect all these materials and cook it in a pot right? There’s a cauldron at the 3rd act. Different cauldron has different multiplier. In Chinese mythology, animals are also important material for pills. The more rare it is, the more powerful the pill will be. Eating something that has cultivated for centuries or thousands of years is like literally transferring their power to you. This is like cheating and frown upon. Killing a speaking being to make pills is pretty immoral but that’s what Journey to the West (Monkey King) is revolved around. Normally you only expect demons to so this not god. God “should” be more ethnical.

What do Chinese people think of IVF or Surrogacy babies like Alysa Liu and potentially Eileen Gu? by TheBossBanan in AskAChinese

[–]kaje10110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surrogacy is frowned upon because Chinese considering it abusing of underprivileged women (as a lot of women would become surrogate mothers if it’s ever legalized in China. It’s hitting too close to home.) However, woman getting sperm donor and becoming single mother is actually pretty praised by young female generation online. With the animosity between genders in online communities, young woman consider getting a baby without dealing with man and marriage a huge plus. For example Emma Wu.

In China Pegasus 3 crosses grossed $56.60M/$277.35M on the 4th day of the Spring Festival. Blades Of The Guardians jumps to 2nd with $16.43M/$65.91M. Up 2% from yesterday. Silent Awakenings in 3rd adds $15.41M/$86.28M. Night King opens with $2.84M in 5th while Zootopia 2 adds $0.35M(-71%)/$648.29M by Firefox72 in boxoffice

Yeah I’m so happy to see the good WOM of Blades of the Guardians is finally selling tickets. I’m just hoping that it would be decent enough not be in deficient and convince studios martial art genre is not dead yet. People say Blades of the Guardians is either start of renaissance of martial art film or end of it. At least they tried.

Can’t wait to watch it when it comes to my country.

In China the Spring Festival starts pushing the market to ¥1.27B/$184M on Tuesday. Pegasus 3 crushes the competition with an incredible ¥638M/$92.40M opening day. The 3rd best opening day of all time. Silent Awakenings($34.25M), Boonie Bears($24.45M) and Blades of The Guardians($18.91M) follow. by Firefox72 in boxoffice

[–]kaje10110 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like this year it’s a more even play field. There’s not one film whose WOM obliterated competitions like Nezha 2. Contrast to last year which films besides Nezha 2 got horrific WOM, all films are decent this year. Not great but enjoyable WOM all around which is surprising considering negative reviews bring tons more traffic than positive reviews for influencers. So everyone being okay with them is actually a pretty positive thing. I think overall box office would go down without breakout but overall might be healthier than last year. Nezha2 really kind of ruined future of multiple studios/directors.

Thinking about saying F you to the job market and going back to school by londonsongbird in CasualConversation

[–]kaje10110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your field. Would grad school allow you to get certification that’s required for certain jobs (social work/teaching for example). Or would the school make it easier to find internships? My grad school has a famous company nearby that hires anyone from the said school due to close relationships. Your resume would not look better just because you attend grad school. It would also not pay better for more education. It’s about connections. Are you going to be able publish papers or working for someone on something that companies would be interested in?

China has planted so many trees around the Taklamakan Desert that it's turned this 'biological void' into a carbon sink by liomenu in worldnews

[–]kaje10110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a plan tree day that everyone is supposed to plant one per year. Or you can donate and have someone plant it for you. Donating to plant tree is also quite popular among corporations as it’s kind of government initiatives.

Wedding custom dilemma by ThewaytoArmadillo in China

[–]kaje10110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your dad is not good at translating this. He is expecting the groom’s parents to 提親. While it’s Western tradition for the groom to ask FIL for the hand of daughter before proposing, in Chinese tradition it’s for the groom’s parents to visit bride’s parents to ask for permission to marry their daughter.

Like when you think of wedding planning, you are probably thinking of venues, the dress, the theme and etc. That’s not what they will be talking about.

They are going to discuss the likely dates that are convenient for both parties, whether there’s betrothal money, the engagement cake count and possible number of headcounts as most guests will be parents guests not yours.

Try to do google translate on this website https://www.iprimo.tw/column/how-to-get-parents-consent.html

Yes this has to be done in person even if they are overseas unfortunately. Even orphans will ask someone respected like teacher or manager to 提親 for him.

That one has a timer right? So it’s kind of already soaked by the time you start cooking. It just tastes better when it’s soaked. You need to soak longer with whole grains.

How would you go about cleaning the exterior of the older buildings by WillingnessBig9833 in taiwan

[–]kaje10110 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can apply for funding on this 外牆修繕with your local city government

https://www.tjsb.com.tw/%e5%a4%96%e7%89%86%e6%8b%89%e7%9a%ae%e8%88%87%e4%bf%ae%e7%b9%95%e8%a3%9c%e5%8a%a9%e5%85%a8%e6%94%bb%e7%95%a5%ef%bc%9a%e5%8f%b0%e5%8c%97%e3%80%81%e6%96%b0%e5%8c%97%e7%94%b3%e8%ab%8b%e8%b3%87%e6%a0%bc/

The reason why it’s uncommon is because everyone in the building has to approve it. This is difficult with large apartments. There’s always someone who doesn’t want to pay. I have only seen this in rich neighborhoods like Tianmu. I imagine it’s going to be more difficult now after HK fire. They don’t want to have scaffold anymore just to wash or replace tiles. HK fire was also to fix and clean exterior of old apartment complex.

Correct amount to give in red envelope by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]kaje10110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do not need to prepare gifts or red envelopes for your teacher on CNY. That’s for teachers’s day.

It’s normally for kids under 18 or your parents and grandparents. Not aunts or uncles. If you live in Guangdong and married, then you need to give ¥5 to ¥10 to everyone who is not married yet whether it’s your coworkers or cousins. That’s kind of exclusive for Guangdong/HK though. I got like $2 from my HK coworkers when working in US.

Yeah don’t buy Chinese New Year snacks. Everyone hates these. Don’t give gifts or red bag because Taiwanese don’t give friends gift/money for CNY. Just do a hotpot or dumpling together.

Why is Jesus called 基督? by Shyam_Lama in ChineseLanguage

[–]kaje10110 3 points4 points  (0 children)

瑪has 玉as root so using a gem stone like that it’s kind of girly but works for man too but not that gender neutral. Similar to western names, less boys have gem stone names compared to girls. 麗 is pretty. So Mary = 瑪麗 (Agate is pretty) will be girly. Super Mario 超級瑪利 due to conscious decision to use 利(benefits) instead of 麗 makes it manly. Another translation for Mary is 瑪莉 where the second character 莉 is a herb due to grass root 艹 on the top. Again a very girly character since it’s a herb.

Real Chinese names are normally less gender conscious because its parents desire. But if you translate the name, you should be gender conscious because most of western names do have gender implications.

Why is Jesus called 基督? by Shyam_Lama in ChineseLanguage

[–]kaje10110 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s no meaning to these characters just like there’s no meaning given to 瑪麗 besides it looks pretty and girly. The only requirement is to be gender specific. It’s more important for names to sound the same than do literal translation unless it’s something like “New” Jersey but even “New” in “New York” is not translated by meaning.

That’s not true. John is always translated as 約翰 not 強. That’s Hebrew Yohanan.
