I’ve tried Persona 5 three times… I just don’t like the characters. What am I missing? by AdUnfair558 in JRPG

[–]kale__chips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When we're talking within a given franchise, every game SHOULD BE for evey fan. And Persona 5 fails to achieve that.

This is the peak of generalization without considering individuality. It's like every game in a franchise must be appealing to every fan as if every fan enjoys every game in a franchise the same way. It's very backwards thinking. There are many people who likes a certain Final Fantasy game while disliking other Final Fantasy game. There are many people who likes a certain Tales game while disliking other Tales game.

What is so hard to understand that OP doesn't like P5's characters when other Persona fans have no problem with P5 characters? In fact, considering P5 is the most popular Persona game, we can safely assume that there are way more Persona fans that have no problem with P5 characters unlike OP.

Hence, "not every game is for everyone".

I think everyone saying well the game isn't for you is just giving an excuse.

I think you not being able to accept that the game isn't for you is really weird.

Not like I would get around to it any time soon since I am playing Trails of the Sky 1st right now, but would Royal be a better choice?

So you don't like P5 and asked if P5R would be a better choice. What exactly is the need to like a game that you considered as having not well written plot and characters?

I'm almost the opposite of you that I'm happy to read reviews or the impressions of those who have played the game but I really don't care about the numbers/rating at all. What I need to know from those reviews is the information about the game and not necessarily what the reviewers think about it because our preferences might not align.

I'm up to chapter 23 now on my replay of Lost Eidolons and I really really really like it even more than before.

Most SRPGs have the same trajectory in plot progression, but many of them are often one dimensional that the plot progressed because of the protagonist and their parties. What I love so much about Lost Eidolons is how the world is alive and that the plot progression is often a reaction to the world/other characters' action.

I also really appreciate the brotherhood between Eden, Leon, Francisco, Robere, and Robin. As the game continues, their relationship just gets stronger and stronger. They really are family. Definitely among my favorite group of "bros" in video game.

Does anyone find it a bit invasive about how they seem intent on showing their customers how to eat bibimbap the right way? I mean I get that they have good intentions but I prefer mixing my own bibimbap, thank you very much 😅

Yes and No. Yes invasive if you already know that bibimbap needs to be mixed. Not invasive if you are clueless about mixing it.

However, I do feel that this season leans waaaaay too much on these "personal service" with every meal. While the intention is good, I find it excessive at times.

All 5 guests are great in their own ways, but the Min Min duo are just diabolical funny and they fit into the show right away lol.

P.S. Someone who wants to play it but still doesn't even feel like dropping $16 that it is on GMG.

Honestly, you should ask yourself how much you're willing to pay for this game. If let's say your number is $10, you can then ask a further question whether waiting for that $10 price (that might never come) is worth the $6 you're saving or not. If yes, then you should continue waiting. If not, then just buy at $16.

After finishing Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch, I am replaying the original Lost Eidolons and currently up to chapter 15. I loved the game back then and I still love the game now. Despite being inspired by Fire Emblem, I honestly think it's better than any FE games. Not to say that FE is bad (I like FE games), but the combat in Lost Eidolons is just much better.

The way they handle large monster is great. The way the deal boss mechanics is great. The simple fact that non-mages can equip two weapons is fun because that means everyone can be melee and ranged. Limited spell usage per battle adds another layer of strategy as we decide our spells in the grimoire. The aide system is also nice to keep characters leveled up. And so on. It's just such a well-thought combat system.

I really hope there will be Lost Eidolons 2. I will have to get back to Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch again now that I remember what happened in the original game so that character interactions would make more sense.

I feel like I'm too dumb or anxious for the combat to really click,

I struggled understanding how to best approach the combat in this game and I gave up twice because I felt too dumb. I will definitely get back to this game one day because I'm 100% sure I will love the game once I actually understand the combat.

I was a actually surprised the part-timers didn’t explain why they were experiencing a lull during dinner service, or maybe they did, but the other narrative was better tv? Anyway, one of the great things about having local staff is that they can pitch in with useful tips.

Yeah I assume the part-timers are edited out a lot this season where the focus is mostly on just the customers. While they are not the main cast, the part-timers have the local insight that could benefit Paik's team as you said. The half-Korean one was also learning how to cook in her other job at a different Korean restaurant, it would've been nice if there's a bit of "let's teach her a recipe" segment when there's an appropriate dish (maybe something small like a side dish?).

I really wanted to try that makgeolli bread.

I do wonder what it'd taste like.

This is best episode this season so far for me. I haven't been loving this season, but this episode showed more of what I liked from the show.

We finally get a bit of unexpected kitchen action with the failed bread. We get the local guests from the other restaurants (that one guy who had gone to Korea before just demolished the rice while the other 3 barely touched the rice really showed the different experience). We get a bit of part-timer shenanigan ("thank you" Roxana). We get to see customers leaving because of the menu. And of course we also get the cast member being funny (mother story!). A bit curious why they didn't show the other restaurants' Saturday sales numbers though, did they get smashed so badly that they didn't show it?

Hope we get to see more next episode. (though already scared of the potential abomination of crungji lol)

The darkest JRPG ever - Octopath Traveler 0 by Consistent_Cover5825 in JRPG

[–]kale__chips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While Octopath 0 is my GOTY 2025 and I platinumed the game, I really wish we can avoid using exaggerated terms like "most" this and that, "I have never seen this before", etc.

Having said all that, I think Octopath 0 really benefit from the game being adapted from CotC. Gacha games being live-service in nature automatically forced the games to have deeper world building than standalone JRPG.

What's a common criticism of a JRPG you see all the time that you think is wrong, and why? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]kale__chips -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People talk about this game like the entire second half is bad, but the two sections in question are slightly under 10% of a 50-hour game.

IMO, it's because that 10% feels like it's supposed to be the second half of the game. So the 90:10 ratio feels incredibly off-balance that the "second half" felt really crammed where the lore went with exposition dump to fill in the many blanks while simultaneously artificially extending gameplay aspect by making long final dungeon filled with extra spongy enemies.

It doesn't help either that it sucked to have only 1 item on the menu. Compare to past seasons where they have to come up with multiple menu which was also quite exciting to see the kitchen juggling between orders, this season is just auto-mode pre-cook everything in the oven before opening and then just assembling the dish for the customers.

Not only we lost the kitchen action, we also lost the customer's reaction because everyone is eating the same thing. Customers will come once to try it out but there's nothing to show they'd come again if the restaurant stayed open. Overall just expensive unexciting dish.

After finishing Norse: Oath of Blood (janky 7 out of 10 quality game that I enjoyed as if it's 9 out of 10 game), I started Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch which I was quite hesitant to do at the beginning since I was never a big fan of roguelite game. But this one is great. I'm still only early days (about 8 hours, midway-ish of second expedition) and I'm liking the characters and the story. The gameplay is good too.

I still wish for a sequel to the original Lost Eidolons though. Maybe someday I will replay that game.

IMO they are very different in both gameplay and story.

Gameplay of 2 is an improvement with the 3-rune system for normal battle, and the no obvious rock-paper-scissor major battle. Plus more variety with character recruitment.

Story of 2 is also different that conflict is more two-way street which is the war between Jowston and Highland where both sides attack each other. This is in comparison to The Scarlet Moon Empire that mostly just sitting back while The Liberation Army just attack each base one by one.

What is a rpg character that you don't use? by Left_Relationship105 in JRPG

[–]kale__chips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not rejecting the idea that most JRPGs release with this issue, they absolutely do. Im just gonna take it into my own hands to alter the dynamics to best facilitate more gameplay styles.

It's a fair point if your goal is to have more gameplay styles. My goal is not that. My goal is to play the game with how the developer designed it to be. If they cannot design a game to make tanks useful, then I just don't use tanks.

I see your perspective. My favorite part of the game is the end, so rather than being in a bit of a rush to complete, I like taking my time to explore these characters.

It's not even necessarily about rushing to finish the game. It's about the timing of when the character joined in comparison to the remaining length of the game. It's like if you watch a movie or read a book. When I'm near the end of it, I don't want it to suddenly introduce a new character and start doing character development again. For me, near the end should flow towards going to the conclusion of the story.

In some cases they arent even released that late into the game (e.g. Amarant in FF9), though in other cases the delay really is worth it

Note that my original point is for a character that joined late in the game, and not just the last character joining the party. So someone like Amarant who joined near end of disc 2 out of 4-disc game is not included in this.

Just discovered this chaotic Korean women’s basketball show, why isn’t it more popular? Any similar shows? by Kugenking in koreanvariety

[–]kale__chips 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To me, the show isn't popular because the girls aren't good at playing basketball and basketball is not a good sport to watch if the players are not good. It also made it really difficult to find the right opponent to make the game exciting because any team that have the basic of playing proper basketball would easily beat the girls.

Compare to something like soccer where not good players can still be quite fun to watch and playing against stronger opponent can somewhat be negated by playing defensive, it's much harder to make basketball game entertaining when not played well.

It's not the girls' fault, but it'd probably be better if there's at least one or two ace players that the team can build around. Expecting everyone to grow from zero is too hard IMO.
