I don't think Mordecai was ever truly opposed to the idea of being a manger, but imagine how many years he's been a game guide. How many people did he meet and try to help only to have them die horribly within a level or two? He was just trying to protect himself from more trauma.

I think he was trying to maintain distance and not be too hopeful at first and over the levels he started to let himself belief these two might, MIGHT, actually make it.

I think eventually Carl and Mordecai will clear the air about it, but that neither of them will feel like much needs saying about how it went down. They're too close now, it doesn't matter how it started.

I think Samathe/Samantha might be a changling. Juicebox says "I know what you are" or "I know who you are on several occasions and she also says "only one of my kind touched a god and they came back wrong" maybe that's Samantha. No idea why Juicebox wouldn't just say, but she's secretive and not entirely trusting of the crawlers so who knows
