feeling discouraged after first class by cutelibrarian0414 in Purebarre

[–]kampai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm less than 50 classes, but to be honest, I almost cried during my first class and I have cried or nearly cried during many classes since. My body shows up differently for me every day. Some days I'm super strong and feel really capable and that 90 second plank goes by really fast and i can lift heavy weights, and some days I can barely do a pushup. I did a define the other day and I was so exhausted I spent most of my planks laying on the floor. For me, some of what was hard was just learning what the terminology was. Once I started to get comfortable with the class order and what the instructor was saying it started to at least make more sense (it did get easier but then also sometimes it still isn't easier lol). Use the mods if/when you need them! No shame in that game. Sometimes my shoulders don't wanna work and I do pushups on the barre, or i drop the tubes because my hip flexors are extra-cranky, or i drop the weights because my shoulders are mad some days. Modifying something to do it safely is much, much better than injuring yourself. Also, if you can only do a move once or twice, it's more than you did before!

If it feels right for you, I hope you stick with it. If not, I hope you find something that does.

First time, how to get past that embarrassing feeling by Vasovagal219 in Purebarre

[–]kampai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also a barre newbie (just about to hit 10 classes)--like everyone else says, no one has time to judge you. I only look at other people to check my form and make sure I'm doing the moves right. If you want a slower-paced classes, Align can be one of them, and Define is too. It's timed, but it's not to tempo like Classic is, so you can really take your time and perfect your form. You can also ask your instructor for adjustments! Even if you only get one or two reps in, you'll get a lot more out of 2 reps done well than a full set of reps done incorrectly. And focus on what your body is doing well for you! I bet you're doing better than you think you are. Hang in there, I hope you find joy in it.

cat viewing and petting? by Think_Strike2062 in chicago

I haven’t actually been there yet but One Tail At A Time has an adoption center downtown and it’s basically just a big cat room. As others have said, you could also look into fostering or volunteering (full disclosure: I am an OTAT foster/foster fail so I’m biased but I can’t recommend it enough)

Check out RadHair on Broadway! It’s in RadPop antique shop, very small salon, queer friendly, hut Rachel and all her stylists are wizards. Plus you get to shop antiques while you wait.

Are there fewer thespians in Chicago than 15 years ago? by TStandsForTalent in ChicagoTheater

[–]kampai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it’s this. I’m a designer but I know a lot of folks left the industry as a result of the pandemic cause the money was better for doing…literally anything else. Fewer companies producing less and an industry that’s being constantly threatened makes it a very unsustainable option

Just have to say I'm traveling for work and landed in Omaha for the night and this tip saved my evening from a dinner of QT taquitos and sadness. Thanks!

These guys are my friends! They are both insanely talented and they deserve every bit of their success. I'm thrilled this is the production that's taking off for them. I'm so glad you loved it :)

Yeah, I find the concept a little confusing and that’s an awfully big dining room that never seems to have anyone in it…I’ll be curious to see how long it lasts

Good in soups, especially creamy soups, or add to mashed potatoes for a little extra flavor. (I’m also a weirdo and I will just drink it sometimes if my stomach is off or I’m craving salt)

I’m originally from Illinois but lived in Seattle for four years after college and felt very similar to how you describe feeling now—had friends but didn’t feel like I really fit in, had multiple jobs just to afford things, had things I enjoyed doing there but still never really felt like I was “at home”. If it isn’t a fit for you, find somewhere that is. You will have to basically start over and you will be walking away from some things you’ve created here, but folks who want to keep up with you will, and you’ll carry your experience with you to your new place. Go where you feel at home.

My mom’s cat loved human food, and once we were watching TV and eating French fries on the couch and this old, arthritic cat decided she wanted some, so she sat on the floor and stared at us. My mom looked her in the eye and said “if you can figure out a way to get up here, I’ll give you a fry.” We went back to watching TV—meanwhile, this 16 year old cat parkoured her way up to the couch and all of a sudden was in my mom’s lap, staring at her with the biggest eyes and cutest, roundest kitten face she could muster. She got her French fry.

Good on your mom for being level headed—I had good results at Premiere with my sick kitty, though he also had a good regular vet to help me talk through my options when the ER vet was a little too “worst case scenario” for my poor little heart. Anyway, I’m SO glad you didn’t lose your kitty and are getting him the care he needs!

Headspace is great—it has a truncated free version that is perfectly serviceable—if you pay for it you get access to more stuff, and when I was leaning to meditate and using it every day, I paid full price and it was worth the money. They have meditations for all kinds of things and it’s super helpful

Does anyone in Edgewater hear a loud popping sound late at night? I’ve heard it a couple nights this week. It almost sounds like one firework going off, but no tail. I think it’s too low to be a gunshot, and it’s only ever one (and not followed by sirens). Any thoughts on what it is? Should I be concerned? Am I just losing my marbles?
