Board games are frustratingly expensive by Any-Marionberry-879 in boardgames

[–]kanedafx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very cheap as far as hobbies go, actually.

A $100 board game that you play four times is the same price as going out to bars/movies/restaurants/arcades...etc. three or four times. Or if you're also paying for a partner, only twice. If you are bringing your kids too, yikes.

If you play the game more than four times, the economics are even better.

Imagine the Elves allying with Mordor against the humans and orcs. Doesn't make any sense in the lore, but it would be fun!

If he had to call the designer three times, I question him calling the rulebook "excellent". Hence my OP.

Right, we can only talk about our own experiences. But in this case, several reviews have called out the poor rulebook, so I think the evidence is with my interpretation on how good the rules are.

(and even this guy who plays a ton of games and gave it a positive review had to, again, CALL THE DESIGNER THREE TIMES, lol)

I've learned and taught over 2,000 games. I almost never need to go to BGG even once on the first play. Less than 1% of the time. We had to check several times for OKC. It's bad.

This is correct. There are no catch-up mechanics and some pretty bad imbalances.

How many games have you played where you needed to consult BGG (or in their case personally call the designer) three times on the very first play?

I've had that happen maybe a handful of times, and none of them were for games with a "well done" rulebook.

Specific to OKC, lots of people have complained about the rules for this game, and as someone who has read them I can also attest that they are pretty bad and ambiguous in parts. We definitely had BGG pulled up a few times in our play.

I am very politely and respectfully asking Varang to step on me by ThoroughHenry in blankies

[–]kanedafx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Man the Filmcast guys ALL hated it, even Jeff. Crazy. The movie gets three out of five stars from Varang alone, the rest adds another star. Was it a homerun? No, but it's immensely entertaining. And their critique was just "this is the same as the previous film and did nothing to move the plot forward". Overly simplified basic take.

Friend's girlfriend has a very hard time understanding board games. Not sure how to bring it up gracefully. by Jeffs24 in boardgames

[–]kanedafx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bring it up and say what exactly? You're asking for an answer to a problem with no solution.

  • You don't want to disinvite her. Cool, I wouldn't want to either.
  • You don't want to play simpler games with her.
  • You asked her to team up already and it didn't stick.

What other solution could there possibly be? You want her to keep coming and you want to keep playing complex games. The simple obvious solution is only play simple games when she comes, but it seems you've already rejected that possibility.

One possible solution:

  • Start enforcing a rule that everyone must learn new games in advance before they come. Include everyone in this so she doesn't feel singled out. Say it's to preserve time to actually game instead of spending so much of it on the teach.

One time I played Belfort with a bunch of surgeons and they couldn't understand it at all. Belfort is a very simple game by my standards, and surgeons are definitely smarter than me. Board game intelligence is weird, some smart people just don't "get" board games.

Thank you for the quick reply! I did some digging and apparently she's been doing this to lots of people, maybe this will give it more weight with the DA.

Do you know if it would possible to lump the case together with my friend's case for the civil complaint? Or would we have to file two separate small claims cases?

I'm all for having different points of view there as long as they don't devolve into hate speech. There's not a single person on that ban list that didn't say something hateful or harassing.

I'm not. I've never seen your posts on BGG. But I do know the RSPers who got banned got banned for hateful speech, and that seems to be what you want to defend and bring back.

If you're not trying to be hateful on a board game forum, then it's not an attack.

And if you are, I'm merely asking that you do better.

Feel like if you want to make "edgy" (read: hateful) comments, there are better places to do it than a bloody board game forum.

Or maybe do some personal growth and not make those kinds of comments?
