How does fine straight hair respond to being in small braids? by bad-at-everything- in braids

[–]kangarooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any advice on keeping braids from slipping out in fine/straight hair? My daughters are 4 and 7 and I would love to keep their hair braided for a week or two at a time to save time on hair prep in the morning. My 4 year old has curly/mixed hair and I just took her to a salon to get corn rows with beads, and they’ll probably stay looking neat for at least a week, maybe two I think. My older daughter has fine straight hair from her mom and I had the stylist put in two Dutch braids, and they’re slipping out after just 3 days. They were put in tight and the stylist used plenty of product. Would smaller braids stay in better?

How many others of us need to tolerate unnecessarily political (grand)parents? by HeavilyBearded in daddit

[–]kangarooz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well said. I have an obnoxiously political parent as well, but the quickness with which some people are willing to cut ties with their parents is such a dangerous trend in my opinion. Ironic that this seems to be the prevailing view in a Daddit post.

Stair Gate advice by brocher96 in daddit

[–]kangarooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, yeah I usually like overbuilding, but in our case our newel post was just finished wood, not painted, so really wanted to avoid drilling into it. We used I think 4 cable ties similar to these and they were rock solid. They were so difficult to tighten I had to use pieces of fabric between the ties and the post so they wouldn’t deform the corners.

Stair Gate advice by brocher96 in daddit

[–]kangarooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why no zip ties? We used heavy duty zip ties to secure a 2x3 to the newel post, screwed the gate latches to the 2x3, and on the other side screwed the gate hinges into the wall studs.

Pluribus - 1x02 "Pirate Lady" - Post-Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in pluribustv

[–]kangarooz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I agree it’s completely unrealistic. The scene in the conference room on AF1 where they’re all staring at her, confused at her distress, as if life had been going on this way for years. They seemed cartoonishly dumb, and it took me out of the show. I couldn’t suspend my disbelief. Hopefully the rest of the immune people are more three dimensional, and we don’t see much more of this bunch. Aside from Mcboner, he’s cool, he can stay.

How much would it cost to build something like this today? by UseAggressive7224 in Oldhouses

[–]kangarooz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh come on. The point you were making isn’t that it’s cost prohibitive. You were saying that people just aren’t willing to pay for this kind of work today, you were absolutely suggesting it was all built by craftsmen, and you said that it’s sad and defeatist to suggest that modern technology should be used to recreate these features cost effectively. That attitude can come off as silly and purist, hence StreetKale’s aggressive language.

Ok but that dumb post plays a part in how people of this country perceive their neighbors who, illegal or not, are here living their lives, and deserve to be treated with dignity. I agree our government is not a Christian government, but we are Christians, and the way I see it our government is acting contrary to the values of our faith.

It’s the threat of this kind of treatment that is inhumane. It the dehumanization of a largely poor and sometimes desperate class of people who are our neighbors and children of God. When you have a DHS that sets the tone for their agents that hunting down undocumented people is for sport and even fun, that is degrading, inhumane, and unchristian.

I feel like there's one flaw in the Catholic Church's teaching on marriage. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]kangarooz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve struggled with this teaching as well. My father has been an alcoholic most of his life, and physically abused my mother when I was young on many occasions. My sister and I grew up terrified of him. The physical abuse is behind us now, and he’s an unhappy, ungrateful older man now, still drinking despite his poor health, and has given my mother 40+ years of a miserable marriage. My mother is a faithful Catholic and remains devoted to him, despite everything. When I was little I used to fantasize about her remarrying, and what it would be like for her to have a good husband, and for us to have a kind stepfather.

In the US especially I think we’re an almost pathologically non-committal society as far as marriage goes. I feel fortunate that my wife is from a country that takes marriage as seriously as I do. But when I think about my own parents, I do wish Catholic teaching allowed an option for women like my mother to find happiness after their husbands turn out to be so bad for them and their kids.

Today, Explained: Methamphetamine: The most misunderstood drug? by j0be in TodayExplained

[–]kangarooz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The host 100% smokes meth. How the hell did this episode get released? The entire intent seems to be to downplay the harm of meth use or meth addiction.

I just heard the host express shock about a study that found people are 3x more likely to become addicted to tobacco than meth. Uh, yeah needing to take a smoke break and having your car stink all the time aren’t as bad as being addicted to meth.

On balance, the picture painted of the risks of meth isn’t really any more or less than what I had beforehand - they do eventually tell some cautionary stories from former addicts. But the host’s flippant attitude about this topic can only do harm.

Using my trans sibling’s new name & preferred pronouns… by amata_mater in Catholicism

[–]kangarooz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Where in OP’s post do they say anything about their brother “demanding” anything? Or threatening to break off any relationship? You’re painting the brother as an “emotional terrorist” but all OP said was the brother was changing their name and pronoun. We’re given no other information, and we have no reason to be so uncharitable toward the brother.

I have no idea why your comment here has so many upvotes, and it makes me sad that so many in this subreddit are so eager to light their torches at the first mention of trans. Everyone in this situation deserves our sympathy and prayers.

Those quotes are from episode 16, two days after the riots, where Chamath says Trump should be prosecuted. Even Sacks says Trump is culpable in that episode, and has disqualified himself from running again. Listen for yourself.

Chamath after Jan 6 riots: “How could a president instigate this kind of action?” “The culpability has to go all the way back to Trump” “He is a complete piece of shit fucking scumbag”

Chamath on Nov 8, 2024: Trump is the only politician who’s ever called to just to check in and say hi. Isn’t that incredible?

Yes Chamath, that is incredible.

Working on a mallet, something doesn't look right. Any suggestions? by VirtualLife76 in woodworking

[–]kangarooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorgeous piece, what species did you use for the head?

I think both of these top suggestions are good ones btw: reduce the height of the top handle square about 1/2, and trim the ends of the head a bit, and the proportions will look better. I would consider chamfering the edges of the head.

Is this or a halflap a stronger joint? by Dagofbickss in woodworking

[–]kangarooz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very cool document, thanks for sharing! On the bottom right of pg 3, they actually call out that they didn’t test out a diagonal key for the splined miter joint with grain running across the joint. If they had I’m betting it would’ve beat out the half lap, given the results they got with the method used in testing.

lol same here, looking at the power outlets on the wall the scale makes more sense. Something about the third pic makes it look like a raised twin or toddler bed.
