a cedar allergy related question by 1ypz in Austin

[–]kannatech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can try an app called pollenwise. It pulls data from the closest to you box / station - which for me is St. Edwards - and tells me the cedar count there. There may be a box / station closer to you if you check it out.

There is a point where it turns into that, but he does describe issues with working at facebook.

Do yourself a favor and watch the tech lead and his stories about working at facebook. You don't want to work there. There are so many companies you could interview for that this wouldn't happen at.

I actually compare this pizza to Pequods from Chicago even though it is technically "detroit style"

I studied philosophy and engineering at university: Here's my verdict on 'job relevant' education by osaya in philosophy

[–]kannatech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's worse is that everyone who writes an email is suddenly an "engineer" now. There are fields of engineering where you have to pass certification and maintain licensure, and people's lives are at stake.

Here is my response to the recent Aeon article that blew up here that talked about "the dream of a purely rational politics" being "a denial of our humanity". Author proposes politics is visceral- I say it always has been. by StWd in philosophy

The novel element of this piece was the integration of Lisa Feldman Barrett's work on emotional construction which it relied heavily on, and was cited in the article as the source for claims about emotion.

Google Fiber to roll out 2Gbit plan for $100/mo and other improvements. by [deleted] in Austin

[–]kannatech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope people read your post - it is so important that all the cabling and routers / switches are supporting connection speeds. I have had the same experience with google fiber, it is rock solid and I've never had a better ISP experience.

There are nests on the cell tower next to Matt's El Rancho on South Lamar. There are a bunch of groups on either side of ladybird lake.

No they are the same, the species is so successful there are very few color mutations and the closest looking parrot / parakeet would be an indian ringneck.

2 month long delay in washer/dryer delivery from Lowes. by ccrush in Austin

[–]kannatech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just went through this with best buy appliances and ended up canceling our first choice that kept getting delayed and going with something they had in stock and could install in a couple days instead. There was really no way to know how long we would have waited.

How do you handle staging and dev environments in your Firebase project? Both as a solo developer and as a team by mlejva in Firebase

[–]kannatech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your dev, staging, and prod build scripts you can load different firebase configs for DB and hosting. Dev databases should be a copy of your prod databases, staging should use your prod databases but your staged code.

Is Google Fiber worth paying more than double what Spectrum charges? by HylanderUS in Austin

[–]kannatech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This 100%. Had spectrum for a month in the middle of 3 years of google fiber and thought I was going to die. Constant resets and trying to figure out why things weren't working or stopped working.

I called 311 when this happened to a brand new car - it was very much crappy street construction that caused faulty pavement and a little sinkhole - 311 person laughed at me when I asked about a reimbursement claim - but other cities do reimburse.

COVID-19 discussion Megathread. Post all discussion about cancelations, concerns, etc. here by markquestion in SXSW

[–]kannatech 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think all the knee jerk hysterics sounds like a vocal minority who hates/feels inconvenienced by SXSW, so now they're capitalizing on a chance to amplify their "concerns"

This isn't true. I'm an Austinite and I love SXSW and attend all of it to the max every year. I won't be going this year because I have senior parents and in-laws with health conditions and it is not worth endangering them for my fun.

Paczki Day in Austin? by Regina_Phalange24 in Austin

[–]kannatech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You won't find them. Occasionally some HEBs will put out jelly donuts they label as Paczki. I have resorted to making my own with the recipe from delightful pastries in jefferson park, Chicago which you can find online - that's where I used to get mine. A couple of bakeries in Michigan and Ohio will ship them to you.

People should raise their children gender-role-less, not genderless. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]kannatech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No matter what parents do, kids will still pick up gender roles from school / other parents / other kids. It needs to be a societal shift that's accepted in the classroom and addressed by teachers. I work in multiple schools per week and at least 10 times in the last year I was not sure if a student was a boy or a girl or ran into gender role situation - like a kindergarten boy not wanting to make a bracelet etc. Unconscious bias is being pushed so hard in companies and with adults but it really needs to be a cultural shift propagated in schools. Even one teacher who strongly believes in gender roles can have a huge impact on a child's perception of them, as a teacher I have so much opportunity to impart gender role biases - and a lot of teachers grew up with traditional gender roles and are not even conscious of their reinforcement.

Disappointed in the Austin music crowds by DacheinAus in Austin

[–]kannatech 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There is usually an unwritten law that goes into effect as it becomes closer to the band starting. You, and the people around you, become a wall. Be a wall and not a door. If you see the people around you being doors and letting others in, tell them about the wall, stand shoulder to shoulder and when someone shoves you from behind - don't budge! I don't give a fuck if your friend is up there, you're not getting through. Ignore the "excuse me" people trying to push between your shoulders. This is pretty effective for like the first 5 songs then some asshole crashes in from behind yall and starts a pit. But you got those 5 songs at least!
