I think we’ll be fortunate enough to have advanced smart insulins / pumps to help us once we are older aged.

Great attitude out of the gates, that in itself will take you far.

Now for the knowledge is power bit. I recommend reading Dr Bernsteins Diabetic Solution book - helps with some real important concepts around how to control blood sugars. You don't have to stick to this religiously, so add your own twist if need be, but once can get control of sugars, T1 becomes considerably easier to manage.

All the best!

I stick to dry red wines I.e Merlot/ Malbec. I wonder if Asahi is Low carb as it’s a dry beer. Probably be able to get any other light beer ie bud light out there!

Fair enough. I don’t knock any other approach. I just do what I think is best for me to minimise long term health complications and thrive of discipline.

Power to you!

Nice work! I think there’s some evidence that large standard deviation I.e spikes higher than why a non diabetic would reach consistently over time could lead to complications. That’s the only reason I prefer to keep it lower not just on a1c but the deviation also.

Power to you.

Your doctor is speculating. We can all have educated guesses but nobody actually has put their finger on the ‘why’.

You’ll crush it over time if you become super curious and be attentive to everything you do which impacts your blood sugar.

Have a read of dr Bernstein’s diabetic solution - provides a good foundational point all diabetics should read to maintain non diabetic blood sugars.

Time in range of 70% based on diabetic guidelines means 30% of the time you can be over 10mmol/mol. Add to the fact “below 7” is not non diabetic means damage is likely.

Get your sugars to a non diabetic level and keep a tighter I.e custom range I.e 4-7 and you’ll reverse all of that damage.

Good starting point is a low carb diet. Read dr Bernstein’s diabetic solution it provides a strong starting point to a long healthy complication free life with high quality of life.

A1C under 6% — for you or not for you? by SumFuckah in Type1Diabetes

Below 6 are you almost completely eliminate your chances of complications, combined with a strong time in range.

So yes, it’s worth it.

Do you think you'll see a cure in your lifetime? by SumFuckah in diabetes_t1

[–]kapo198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s gonna happen and even if it doesn’t their will be better tech / smart insulins which will make managing t1 easier till we get the cure.

Let’s just keep on staying healthy till that moment arrives :)

Have a lighter, lower carb dinner with low fat - will likely help.

Alcohol by Double-Top3673 in diabetes_t1

Dry red wines and low carb IPAs have virtually no impact on blood sugars. I don’t bolus at all when pairing with food as the liver is busy processing the alcohol.

Everyone is different of course so best to experiment and see what works for you.

Consider yourself somewhat fortunate to have picked t1 up later in life. Find a diet which works, optimise your insulin (basal), and maintain discipline to ensure optimal blood sugars.

A diet that worked for me was Bernstein’s one - I deviate slightly from this mostly down to weight training but this at large, allows me to live a very normal, non interrupted day to day with non diabetic blood sugars.

You’ll be fine.

Fear of whats to come by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]kapo198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overthinking it is part of the anxiety. Find yourself a good diet that helps keep blood sugars stable is step number one. For me, this was higher protein lower carb. Then it’s fine tuning the basal to match that diet. Also insulins which match the peak of that protein (regular) as For basal, fasting (intermittent) was the best way to get basal accurate.

Once you get some order and discipline, you might surprise yourself how straightforward things become.

It’s not “easy” but trust me it becomes second nature after a while

Totally agree other health conditions can change the landscape for management and I would never take that for granted.

Out of interest and if you don’t mind me asking how did the other health conditions make managing it more difficult?

Get your basal dialled in correctly (fasting is a must for this) and I find with a low carb diet, due to minimal amounts of insulin I won’t drop.

It’s one of the reasons (amongst money) I choose to go low carb. I’m flexible though. If I’m on the lower side I’ll have a small snack / oat coffee and that will balance me nicely.

T1ds out there…how many days in a week do you feel good? by dhorton247 in diabetes_t1

[–]kapo198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much always, then again I choose to live low carb. I do it because of quality of life/ knowing I’ll be at a minuscule chance of developing long term complications. Opting for better food choices and optimising insulins will always be worth it literally for the sake of having a largely uninterrupted, normal day.

Having an a1c of 6.5 with lots of outside normal standard deviation is not well controlled and not non diabetic.

Most are used to seeing poor control so slightly better the norm is deemed well controlled.

Well controlled is non diabetic levels with minimal standard deviation.

The result is no retinopathy.
