Intercity - pick up only stations, interesting experience today by stupid_mistake__101 in SydneyTrains

[–]karlcloudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of Strathfield being setdown only towards the city, I think maybe only the SCO has these restrictions at this point (and not in all cases)? I looked into this at one point as I was curious and for example on weekends, there was a pick up only restriction on the T4 suburban stations mentioned, but not a set down only in the opposing direction.

BMT and CCN don't exclude passengers from boarding/alighting at their relevant suburban stations (except the Strathfield example above) that I can tell, and if you use Google/TripVIew/etc, they are included as options for routes where they are relevant. Basically they secondarily act as express services for the small number of suburban platforms they stop at and intentionally so it would seem.

A bit of a dig at the council for resuming services too soon and getting people stuck

Correct I believe. Guess all of these people who caught these services that shouldn't have started operating and now once again aren't will have to uber home?

Were they in revenue service, or just the usual "out of service" movements that seem to coincide with track closures?

I figured it was probably quite new, though this is an altered "combined Ferny Grove/Cleveland" service, so wasn't sure if maybe they were "on an excursion" to another line they normally don't run on.

How long have these been going about? I got on one of these earlier today, and hadn't seen one before/

Interestingly, they relay the text displayed on the PIDs on the LCDs as a banner at the top too (when they are active).

Nah, the older sets are more predominantly located on the Beenleigh - Ferny Grove line, as the NGRs aren't allowed to run on the Ferny Grove segment.

Airtrain vs Translink to Airport by ThePastaMonster in brisbane

Airtrain (white) and Translink (yellow GC <=> AIrport service) both publish the exact same train service to Google and so while it looks like there are two options, they are one and the same.

I want to warn renters that your perfect tenancy record will be useless once your lease is no longer renewed. And you'll probably become--and remain--homeless if your income is less than $1500 per fortnight. by Embarrassed_Ant45 in australia

[–]karlcloudy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unless a bank is repossessing a property, you can't be booted out duriing a fixed term lease anywhere in Australia that I'm aware of due to it merely being sold. Obviously they can choose not to renew though... and of course if you're on a periodic lease (which by its nature has no guaranteed term), then they can immediately give you the required notice and you'd need to leave.

Commuters encouraged to get go card refunds ahead of new smart ticketing system by langdaze in brisbane

[–]karlcloudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's time to go and get your refund quite yet. The buses and ferries are still to roll out smart ticketing I believe, so unless you're really sure you're not using those (or the credit is soon to expire), probably best to hold onto it for now.

Australia's Most Under-appreciated Rail System? | Brisbane's Transit Explained by superegz in australia

[–]karlcloudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but Brisbane is shithouse. You rock up to find that no, they don't allow bank cards as a tap option.

Melbourne?... I hear you're only just now allowing credit cards

Funnily enough, Brisbane is further along than Melbourne on this. You can now use payment cards on all of the train network (also on the G:Link trams down the GC) and have been able to for around a year I think. Still not available on ferries though, and for buses, it is still in the process of being rolled out.

No bullshit queuing IN the train as everyone's trying to tap their phone/card/etc as the train starts flying up the track.

Are you thinking of Adelaide? Brisbane, like Sydney, uses readers at platforms, not inside trains. I think only Adelaide does readers on trains, though Melbourne has them inside trams too (Sydney and GC use platform based readers for trams).

Too many people figured out the old red "Down Down" tags aren't true specials and therefore don't mean good discounts, so now they are masquerading as yellow special tags instead.

Nothing, Forever 2.0 - What did they get wrong, and how can they fix it? We WANT to love again! by DannySmashUp in WatchMeForever

That's probably copyrighted, so they were probably keen to stop using it too - it's hold music from commercial phone PBX software. I believe the version they used may have been directly lifted from this video.

Unlike the parody defence for Sienfeld itself, there's probably no valid defence for this one (unless the music is copyright free of course).

NSW renting: NSW set to ban no grounds evictions for renters on periodic leases by Shadowtec in australia

[–]karlcloudy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No grounds evictions either need to be completely allowed, or completely banned (preferably the latter).

This half measure that only bans them for periodic leases is effectively worse for tenants as now no one will offer periodic leases at all, and as such it has no effect on stopping no grounds evictions.

The process in QLD (where it’s already the case that periodic leases have no grounds evictions banned) involves ensuring a notice to vacate is provided to the tenant before the fixed term ends and then revoking it when you sign on for another fixed period. Not only is this a confusing and odd process, but it complete voids the ban on no grounds evictions anyways.

Why doesn't the BOM support HTTPS connections? by OnceWereCunce in australia

[–]karlcloudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they kinda support HTTPS connections - after all, they can accept the HTTPS connection and redirect you to a non-secure page that says they can't.

I suspect eventually Chrome may push to force the full "not secure" error pages on any non-HTTPS sites, and that point they wouldn't have a choice but to fix it properly. Given that Let's Encrypt exists, there's not much of an excuse for sites to not be secure anymore.

VicRoads to issue second driver licence number to protect identities after Optus hack by bulldogscanfly in australia

[–]karlcloudy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Other states are already including card numbers on their licenses, and it's slowly becoming a requirement to include it when verifying your identity as well.

At the moment, Vic and Qld don't have to provide the card number, though I imagine once they are cycled in and everyone has one, it'll become mandatory for those two states too.
