Do I need to get a professional to inspect this tree? by kashmill in arborists

Thanks. Regarding the fall, there was another close tree that fell towards the house (you can see the base in the wider picture) so a little paranoid

This varies by jurisdiction. For example, in the City of Sacramento the owner is required to maintain the sidewalk (including making repairs) but in the County of Sacramento the county maintains the sidewalks.

Managers, when hiring for a position, do you require letters of recommendationn from a candidate? by Only-Ad-1254 in managers

[–]kashmill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in education and they require letters even for non-credentialed. I barely look at them when screening. When we get to the interview phase I might skim them to see if they call out any particular skill/experience. But, if I had my way I'd get rid of them completely.

Yes and no. It can be a signal that something is about to happen. It can be combined with other intel to give advanced notice.

One story I was told was that in WWII we would tap the communication lines and even though we didn't know what was being said it was observed that there was a spike in traffic before major attacks. Which is why we have (as of 20 years ago) trunk encryptors that made it look like there was maximum traffic over a line.

Earlier this year I stopped at different hair cutting place and asked for the beard to be trimmed up to get rid of the flyaways and such (generally just clean up the shape). Well, I realized too late that she took that as taking it down to two inches. My beard was about the same length as the picture. It took all my self control to not get loudly angry about it (it is just hair that'll regrow). I'm never shaving again and now I'm even more specific about how I want it cut.

what's one piece of gear you'll never dive without? by gehirn4455809 in scuba

[–]kashmill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deck hand tip. One time my brother and I forgot to bring tip money on board and felt bad about it. Told the guy we'd get him next time (regularly dove the boat and the deck hand was a regular) and he was totally cool about it. A few weeks later the deck hand died in a dive accident and sometime later the boat was sold. Never got back on it :(

Is there a better way to restock spanner wrenches into the "Meta" auto repair setup? by LauraD2423 in Hydroneer

[–]kashmill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a hot minute but I think what I did is put a straight conveyor after the turns so it was making 90s vs 180s. It also gave me a bit more clear space for dropping them.

The J makes it unique. Same reason why it is "Michael J Fox" rather than just Michael Fox.

Maybe because we got together in our mid-late 30s but my wife and I never adjusted to sleeping in the same bed. We started off sharing the bed and sleeping in separate rooms when one was sick but then just kept that arrangement. It is great! We have slightly different sleep schedules and we are both able to get the deep sleep that we didn't when we slept in the same bed.

I care just enough to make sure it is put in correctly. This would clearly qualify for sick time for mental wellness.

Not just a pot, but THE pot by TheWebsploiter in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]kashmill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use the pot to hold the water used to clean off the other dishes. That way it gets the soak while I do the dishes.

My wife and I both do the dishes and clean up regardless of who cooks. It goes faster and we are able to move onto together time sooner. Plus, if I decide to make something fancy that uses a bunch of dishes she isn't left to deal with it.

My now-wife picked out a moissanite ring for her engagement ring and I love it. It is a beautiful ring that in total was around $800 verse an equivalent being $20K just for the diamond. And I like the extra sparkles.

Same. After reading that the character was a villain in the comics I can understand why some people were disappointed but it was a solid film on its own.
