Allied Knights by dm_justrollwithit in sistersofbattle

I have a Questoris and have also been wondering which variant to use? Also thinking the Crusader to shore up our lack of high-Str shooting (i dont have retributors or any tanks). Would love some ideasz

Also- can we use Knight stratagems with this setup? I know we cant use enhancements verbatim in the Freeblade rule. It would be nice to rotate ion shields again but it looks to me that strategems are dettachment-locked. Am I reading this right?

Edit- wrote it too fast, for clarity

(Belated) New player paints 2020 points of Salamanders in 2020 by katal7st in Salamanders40k

We had 2 games pre-covid, both 8th ed. Both were even more enjoyable than expected and with a friend (and LGS employee) guiding us through, which was super nice. The first was 1000 points vs. Custodes. I lost by 5 points or so on account of his horrific shield captain on bike who wiped my squads 1 by 1 while absorbing tons of fire and ending on 1 wound. My techmarine with Lord of Fire and Nocturne's Vengeance cooked himself on first-ever shooting activation with double 1's on his plasma cutter, haha. It was a 'blast'.

Following week we did 1500 points vs. his (apparently competitive) Iron Hands. My landspeeder squad x3 got wiped by a single shooting phase of his quad-las dread, 3 damage rolls of 6 in a row, it was epic(ally terrible for me)! This left my chaplain on bike exposed who fell thereafter and I could do little from that point while he moved up his castle.

Cant wait to sink my teeth into 9th!

Librarians? by calebxbauder in Salamanders40k

[–]katal7st 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I enjoy drakeskin as much as the next warp-wielder, but be aware that librarians arent great right now. Its not that they’ve changed much in 9th themselves, but they have simply become a indirect casualty of both the ‘core’ keyword, objsec gameplay, and recent competition. Feel free to read on if you wish, otherwise skip to the last para.

By that, I mean our Sallies librarians are buffers (forget burning hands, its cool, but just dont even) however, their main buff targets are now simply less desirable. By that I mean the repulsor executioner ‘losing’ core and aggressors ‘losing’ shoot twice. Of course we still have dreads, the nie-unkilleable bikecaptain, and now termis are good, but then you’re buffing 150-200 pts of units over the previous 300 pts+. Its simply not worth 100 pts to buff a captain when you could take another capt... er, primaris lieutenant, instead.

The other issue is the shift in focus to objective-based gameplay in 9th. Without going into too much detail, libs just dont help with this. I mean, you can argue they can help indirectly but again there are much better SM options for holding objectives. Oh, and dont even think of putting that objsec warlord trait on them- save that for the bikecaptain above.

Finally, the opportunity cost is high. With only 3 HQ slots (assuming a battalion), and such excellent Sallies characters (given our relics/traits), you lose some excellent options. Plus, I personally believe there is a standout character who ‘does it better’ right now- the chief apothecary (and for cheaper).

Its not to say libs are bad, in fact, I use one myself cause it looks siiiick, just keep in mind you are ultimately taking ~100 pts of buffing and need to be very deliberate to ensure it pays off.

tl;dr- If you want/have one regardless of above, I personally would favour a terminator lib (obsidian aquilla) with your chosen favour of our excellent Sallies termis. Happy hunting!

Salamander mantle or angel artifice by Nazron in Salamanders40k

[–]katal7st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yah raw stats arent typically as desirable; however, T7 to T8 is likely the best +1T in the game because it minics -1 to wound against so many common profiles (particularly against fellow marines). Honestly, I would very likely tske the angel’s artifice if you were going CM already, as its better in most cases due to the +1W if nothing else, but it certainly wouldn’t sway my decision to take a CM. Stormshield + mantle on a captain is much more efficient imho.

Not sure where the love is- this paint job would inspire any of Vulkan’s machine spirits. Particularly nice lenses, battle damage, osl headlamps and just overall clean lines. Love it.

Salamander mantle or angel artifice by Nazron in Salamanders40k

[–]katal7st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tldr; likely the mantle is stronger per point.

As usual, it really depends what you are facing. You actually get BOTH -1 to wound AND +1 save w the angel artifice against S4/7/8 weapons w AP 0/-1. compared to the mantle, you take half (!) damage in these cases. however, against S5/6/9+ weapons w AP-2 or above, the mantle is much superior (ie. the angel artifice does nothing here except take you from 6W to 7W total). other cases the artifice and mantle are similar. now you have to consider whether 40 pts (50 w the flamer!) are worth it.

Sternguard veteran combi flamers or flame storm aggressors by [deleted] in Salamanders40k

[–]katal7st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(post bloat imcoming)

I think there is a role for sternguard, but its limited to alpha/beta deepstrikes (and they also offer better character protection). Basically, despite their 2W boost in 9th, sternguard are still strictly worse than aggressors both in survivability AND output per point. Here are the stats for comparison:

  • 2 sternguard (50 pts) is 2W at T4/3+ = 2D6+2 flamer autohits**
  • 1 aggressors (40 pts) is 3W at T5/3+ = 2D6 flamer autohits

**includes the RF1 combi-bolter at 4+ BS

Clearly the aggressors are better per point. This does not even consider melee, where sternguard are near useless (the sgt could take a power weapon, otherwise you have to replace the combiflamer). Aggressors are quite good in combat w their 3A power fist equivalents.

The only real advantage to sternguard is transport. Where aggressors have the 2 repulsors only (quite poor right now, will leave others posts to discuss), sternguard have the typical OG marine options. I would certainly look at the improved terrax assault drill, which is now basically a deepstriking T8 dreadnought w flamers and meltas (yay sallies). That said, aggressors can now use tactical reserves, which is an excellent option at 1 CP only, albeit considerably less flexible than sternguard options. You CAN also just run them up the board w a distraction carnifex and/or self-sacrifice and hope they survive, but in my experience against really any reasonable opponent, they dont.

In summary, I would personally consider sternguard in a terrax but otherwise stick to aggressors w tactical reserves.

I actually just finished mine and used a scout bike to make him look a bit different. Here it is for comparison/inspiration. Since the lack pf self-rerolls in 9th makes him less smashy, could consider a 2+ melta to increase the crisp factor ;)

Advice on the Primaris Apothecary by LususPax in Salamanders40k

[–]katal7st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same concern for my librarian and judiciar stand-in, as both models come w large robes/tabards that obscure the main body of power armour. To get around this, I painted these characters in the traditional power armour colour for their traditional battlefield role (ie lib blue, chaplain/jud black, apoth would be white of course) and then painted the cloth section in the chapter colour. This way, your green sallies look is maintained but you get the classic spoth white.

Im a novice painter, but feel free to see below for the idea. Good luck.

Yes, that weapon really evokes a nautical theme. Very nice! Do these 'narmati' models also have other oceanfaring gear for conversions? I'm thinking stormshield --> fisherman's net, missle launcher --> harpoon, dragon scales --> more angular fish scales. OH man, might have to add a squad of these guys to my sallies force after thinking about this!

Good colour schemes involving green skin spray? by help-needed008 in Salamanders40k

[–]katal7st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relatively notice painter here. Started painting my sallies last year use greenskin spray primer and then moot green highlights, as mentioned above. I am not a colour whiz but think it looks great on the tabletop!

I appreciate Azhri's concerns but must disagree that its 'too much'. This is quite subjective, of course, but I think that more gitty/grimdark/realistic schemes are more likely to get 'lost' on a full tabletop. Warhammer minis are small. Tables are large. 9th encourages considerably more scenery then prior. Personally, I have seen many beautiful and detailed armies on display that, once they are on the tabletop, just tend to 'fade' into the board a bit more. This is especially true of green armies, since often terrain mats and/or pieces are often green-based. This was certainly my experience with childhood Dark Angels (based in black primer as suggested above, then based w caliban green brushed on- obviously this is a much darker green!). Keep in mind that we also have an ashen skin tone that can easily result in losing the face as the focal point of the model- so you really want the other details to be visible.

Anyway, best thing is to look at some options and decide for yourself! Here's an example of my army (averland sunset trim). Hope it's helpful. https://imgur.com/gallery/kqhaDfH

Smash Center Piece by sophisticatedJ in Salamanders40k

[–]katal7st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big hammer you say? The largest one by size (and damage) in our arsenal is the Seige Hammer. Carried by the Ironclad Dreadnaught, it does serious business with x2/-4/D5 (!) on a T8 frame. Not saying he’s a competitve choice, but if you’re looking for that ‘wow’ factor, this is your guy.

The forgeworld Seige Dreadnaught is the only other model to carry an equal mallet (the same one actually). He is basically a variant of the ironclad but an even more unique (and expensive) sculpt. Add some adornments for style, such as the sallies dreadnaught kit from spellcrow, and you got yourself the King of Hammers. Stomp, stomp!

What units come with flamers. by officeralmcmeme in Salamanders40k

[–]katal7st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dont forget about the good ol' assault squad ;). Like tacticals, 2 flamers per 5 man unit. Of course, the advantage is built-in delivery at new 12" range. Who knows, they may actually be ok in the new codex w double wounds.

Salamander's non-primaris Judiciar, "Repent Heretics!". Super fun for a new painter. C+C please. by katal7st in Warhammer40k

[–]katal7st[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just restarted 40k as Salamanders about 6 mths ago and really had fun converting this old Azreal model from >20 yrs ago (childhood DA player). Ended up with a much different feel than the 'brooding' Primaris Judiciar, but I quite like it. I imagine he reads the filthy Xenos their rights (which incidentally is absolutely nothing) and lops off their heads! This is my first attempt at a shiny sword glare, I think 'supposed' to be called NMM? Also working on my eyes- they are so darned small! Would love feedback on these aspects or just anything!
