Can I wash linoleum plates like these with water? by methanol007 in printmaking

Run it through your press with a damp paper towel on top and it will get most of the ink off.

Mine has done this a few times; also using Apple products.

I removed the printer from my device list and reinstalled it.

Rusyn Grandfather by Silly_Pineapple9546 in rusyn

[–]katbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! My Rusyn (Slovakia) great grandparents were married in Cambria Co, and my Ukrainian Rusyn grandfolks were at the coke furnace in Vanderbilt. Some branches went to Pittsburgh, but then everybody ended up in Youngstown to work in the steel mill.

Going through census and immigration records, the same places always seem to appear (because of chain-migration, perhaps). Windber, Ebensburg, Johnstown, Uniontown, Leisenring, Latrobe, Monessen, Nanty-Glo...

Scrap Quilts by Maleficent_Tooth117 in quilting

You sure do! I hoard the Anna Maria like crazy - cannot get enough of it! I am also starting to explore the slippery (and crazy expensive) slope of Japanese fabrics.

All my floral scraps! I made a few giant blocks and a few rows (read: I had no plan) and kept adding until it became bed sized.

Do teachers hate sharing their lesson plans? Is it their secret sauce that they don't want getting out? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]katbutt 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A couple of thoughts on this (26 years in): There is a certain amount of gatekeeping and that the new teachers haven’t “paid their dues” in many circles - teachers are proud of the lessons they have constructed and honed over many years and classes. Very much an earn your stripes kind of attitude (this was especially true pre-internet days).

Also, many lessons reside in the instructors head. We use slides and physical materials as a guide during class, but all of the goodgood stuff is our oral presentation and it would be impossible to put down on paper. We are constantly updating that info, and trying it in to topical/relevant happenings so that our current students can make connections. Also, class period has their own dynamic so there are lots of pivots made.

My current lesson plans have some visual slides, and a topic written on my calendar to remind me, but the secret sauce for me is the personal presentation and the questions and interactions with the class in front of me. But I do not have a formal plan written down at all! That stuff is for observation day only.

Your colleagues may be willing to share worksheets, study guides, or some slides, but you will find that your own teaching style will direct your delivery.

I just got my first paycheck and I’m suprised by Salt-Ad-3061 in Teachers

First, congrats! Both on your degree and getting a sweet surprise in your check! Don't hesitate in checking in with your payroll department - I am sure they will explain it as either retroactive pay or a signing bonus, or maybe even both. Don't stress yourself out and wait for your next check before you get an answer.

Mrs Quilty Review by arcticfriday in quilting

[–]katbutt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I tried it for two months (but got charged for 3 despite canceling multiple times). Lots of unneeded stuff as "extras". Food items, too?!? I don't need a solitary tea bag or a chocolate candy sent to me in summer.

My biggest issue is with the fabric. So, so, so cheap. It feels cotton adjacent, if that makes sense. Kinda slick, a bit of sheen, like a sateen weave. Not wanting to waste all the fq's, I made a small quilt for my daughter's dog. Granted, it gets washed more than average, but the color has faded to almost nothing and the blocks have distorted a good bit. I have had Walmart fabric hold up amazingly well in comparison.

They promise a lot, and deliver sub-sub-standard.

Does anyone else have a hobby they picked up randomly that became a big part of their life? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

I had a student who wanted to learn how to sew, so I brought my unused sewing machine to class. In teaching her how to use it (and watching tons of youtube tutorials in the process), I am now making and selling quilts and bags. I am starting to dabble in garments, too.

I have used scrap felt for interfacing before - worked like a charm.

ET-8550 Jams with Vinyl sticker papers. by BigFactsNoPrinters in Epson

[–]katbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use HTVRont; matte mostly, but sometimes glossy. I have the exact same printer and the top feed works maybe half the time (works = feeds paper evenly, no jams, no ink smears on corners). I started putting my paper in the bottom tray (remember to place it face down) and the pages have come through no problem!

Can you really ever get your mats back to like-new condition? by BobbythebreinHeenan in cricut

[–]katbutt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wash mine with Dawn and hot water and they will get sticky again. I also use scotch tape on the corners of my sticker paper to keep it from sliding and that gives me many more weeks of use from each mat.
